John Robert MacNeil
81, Iona
John Robert MacNeil, 81, of Iona, formerly of Cains Mountain, died Friday, March 9, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Red Point, Victoria County, N.S., he was the son of the late Michael D. and Elizabeth (White) MacNeil.
He was a member of St. Columba Parish, Iona and was employed with Little Narrows Gypsum Company for 33 years until his retirement. John Robert enjoyed fiddle music and his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, the former Margaret Theresa Hickey; two sons, Michael and his wife Helena, Jubilee, John, Port Hawkesbury; two daughters, Theresa (Mrs. Hughie MacDonald), Belle Cote, and Chrissie (Mrs. Gordon Rouse), Roseburn; one sister, Martha Young, Sydney; four grandchildren, Patrick, Lisa, Alyssa and Cari.
He was predeceased by brothers, Dan R., J.T., John M., sisters, Cassie, Sadie, Sally, Peggy, Kaye, Chrissie.
The body is resting at St. Columba Parish, Iona, with visiting hours today (Saturday), 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Columba Church, Rev. Fred Morley officiating with burial in Sacred Heart Mission Church Cemetery, MacKinnon’s Harbour.
Donations may be made to St. Columba Building Fund or to a charity of one’s choice.

Effie Catherine (Kaye) MacNeil
77, Iona, N.S.
Effie Catherine (Kaye) MacNeil, 77, of Iona, N.S., died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at home.
She was the daughter of the late John Y. and Catherine (MacDonald) MacLean.
She was a member of St. Columba Parish and the Altar Society. She was a teacher having taught school in her earlier years and was a member of Rankin Memorial Home and School Association.
She is survived by four sons, Jack (Donna), Creignish, Roddie (Paula), Winnipeg, Tipton (Irena), Edmonton and Dan E. (Liz), Iona; two daughters, Connie (Mrs. Eric Bogoros), Goderich, Ont. and Bernice (Mrs. Frank Finn), New Waterford; five brothers, Danny, British Columbia, Alexander and Ralph, both of Orangedale, Edmund, Port Hawkesbury and Nelson, Little Narrows; two sisters, Anne Tipton, Washington and Annie Mae, Massachusetts.
Also surviving are six grandchildren, Chris and Craig MacNeil, Wanda and Jason Bogoros, Matthew and Melissa Finn; great-grandson, Joshua MacNeil.
She was predeceased by her husband, Dan A. MacNeil, brothers, Willie, Clarence and Freddy.
The body is resting at the family residence, Iona, with visiting hours today (Wednesday) after 7 p.m. and Thursday after 1 p.m. Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Columba Church with Rev. Fred Morley officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to St. Columba Building Fund.

Mary MacDonald
92, Iona
Mary Elizabeth MacDonald, 92, of Iona, passed away peacefully on Monday, Dec. 25, 2000.
Born in St. Columba (near Iona), in 1908, Mary was the eldest of ten children born to the late Dan A. MacDonald and Isobel (MacNeil) MacDonald.
Mary was the first graduate with Grade 12 from the Iona Federated High School. Soon after she graduated from Normal College in Truro and began a long and successful teaching career. She taught in the Manatoulin Islands, Ontario, for two years and also taught in many local rural communities such as MacKinnon Harbour, Scotch Lake and Port Morien.
During the Second World War she contributed to the war effort by working as a government clerk in Halifax. Later she resumed teaching and taught at the Indian Day School in Whycocomagh for twenty-two years until her retirement in 1973. She received great fulfillment while teaching at this school and this seemed to be the highlight of her career, where she made many lifelong friends.
After her retirement, Mary volunteered her services to the “Each One Teach One” program and also taught English to many new Canadian immigrants. Mary possessed a powerful intellect and was a devout Christian. She was very well read, quick witted and enjoyed debating politics. Mary had a great understanding of children and possessed a deep love for Iona.
Mary is survived by her sister Catherine (Allan) Nicholson, North Sydney, and a brother Michael Bernard (Beatrice) MacDonald, East Bay. She was also survived by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews who loved her dearly.
She was predeceased by her parents, five brothers, James, Hector, Stephen, Francis, and Dan A. (Rosamund), two sisters, Ann (Tom) Williams and Margaret (Everett) Henry.
The funeral mass will be held Thursday, Dec. 28, at 2 p.m. in Saint Columba Church in her beloved Iona, Rev. Fred Morley officiating with visitation at the church between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, North Sydney.
Jessie E. MacNeil
87, Iona
Jessie Elizabeth MacNeil, 87, a resident of the Cove Guest Home and formerly of Iona, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at the residence.
Born in Woodbine, N.S., she was the daughter of the late John A. and Margaret (Gillis) Campbell.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Sydney and a former member of St. Columba Parish, Iona.
Jessie was known in her earlier years for her love of quilting. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by three daughters, Margaret (Mrs. Joe Starr), Coxheath, N.S., Mary (Mrs. John Fong) and Pauline (Mrs. Hughie MacDonnell), both of Sydney; 13 grandchildren, Darlene, J.J., Ann, Michael, Barbara, Colleen, Anthony, Lydia, Joey, Steven, Mary Rose, Lee and Marissa; five great-grandchildren, Kirsten, Brittany, Brandon, Morgan and Connor.
She was predeceased by her husband, John P. MacNeil in 1978, also by eight brothers, Daniel J., Murdock, Duncan, Malcolm, John Peter, Angus, Malcolm and Dan-Vincent, five sisters, Euphemia, Mary, Sadie, Phemie and Mary.
The late Mrs. MacNeil will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Wednesday, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Columba Church, Iona with the Rev. F. Morley officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery, Iona.
Donations may be made to the St. Columba Church Fund, Iona or the Alzheimer Society.
Margaret Theresa MacNeil
68, Iona
Margaret Theresa MacNeil, 68, of Iona, formerly of Cains Mountain, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at the QEII Hospital, Halifax.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Christina (Hollohan) Hickey.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Columba Parish.
She will be sadly missed by her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by two sons, Michael and his wife, Helena, Jubilee, and Jon, Port Hawkesbury; two daughters, Theresa (Mrs. Hughie MacDonald), Belle Cote, Chrissie (Mrs. Gordon Rouse), Roseburn; three brothers, Bill Hickey (Zena), Sydney, Jim Hickey (Delores), Sydney and Joe Hickey (Jean), Mississauga, Ont.; twin sister, Anne (Mrs. Rory MacRae), Sydney; four grandchildren, Patrick, Lisa, Alyssa and Cari.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Robert MacNeil, who passed away March 9, 2001; brother, Stephen and sister, Gen.
Visitation will be held today (Friday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in St. Columba Parish, Iona. The funeral will be held Saturday, April 7 at 11 a.m. in St. Columba Church with Rev. Fred Morley officiating. Burial in Sacred Heart Mission Cemetery, MacKinnon Harbour.
