Cornelius (Connie) Joseph Martell
72, L'Ardoise
Cornelius (Connie) Joseph Martell, 72, of L’Ardoise, Cape Breton, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 25, 2001, at the QEII in Halifax.
Born in L’Ardoise, he was the son of the late Sylvester and Annie (Briand) Martell.
He was employed with the federal government, first with the Department of Indian Affairs and later with the Department of Public Works.
He was a member of Holy Guardian Angels Parish. He will always be remembered for his great sense of humour and love of fiddle music.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Huguette (Chiasson); sons, Blaine (Sandra) and Blair (Gladys), both of Halifax; sisters, Mary and Eileen; brothers, Johnny, Charlie, Walter and Lawrence and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation in Holy Guardian Angels Funeral Home, L’Ardoise, today (Wednesday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Friday 10:30 a.m. in Holy Guardian Angels Church, L’Ardoise with Rev. John MacIntyre officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Dr. William B. Kingston Memorial Clinic or to a charity of your choice.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Alex A. Morrison Funeral Home, St. Peter’s.
Francis Martin Briand
79, L'Ardoise
Francis Martin Briand, 79, of L’Ardoise, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Born May 9, 1921, he was the son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Landry) Briand.
He worked at the Mount Calvary Cemetery for 17 years as caretaker.
He is survived by sisters, Beatrice (Anthony) Landry, River Bourgeois, Alma Samson, Lower L’Ardoise, Agnes Proulx and Effie Lanteigne, both of Montreal, and many nieces and nephews.
He was also honourary grampy to Ashley, D.J., Brandon and Nicholas Doucette.
Visitation will be held today (Thursday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the L’Ardoise Funeral Parlour. Funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 17 at the Holy Guardian Angels Church in L’Ardoise, with the Rev. John MacIntyre officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Family flowers only by request. Memorials donations may be made to the L’Ardoise Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Unit.

Claire Marie Dawson
73, L'Ardoise
Wife of the late Douglas John Dawson, Claire Marie Dawson passed away at the Strait Richmond Hospital on March 3, 2001.
Born in Everett Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Katherine Riley and Charles F. Bona.
She is survived by her daughter Laudwina (Ron) of L’Ardoise, sons Phillip (Sandra) of Havre Boucher, Winston of Springhill, Stephen (Janet) of Hammonds Plains, Charles (Sheila) of Halifax, Shawn (Helen) of Oxford, four grandchildren, Lorena, Ronald, Keagan, Darby, two great-grandchildren, Courtney and Jared.
Also surviving are step-brothers Douglas Landry of French Cove, Tomas Vigneau of Arizona and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Douglas John Dawson, brother Charles Bona junior, step -brothers Cyril Brymer and Peter Swan.
Visitation will be in the L’Ardoise Funeral Parlour Tuesday, March 6, 2001, 2-9 p.m.
Funeral mass will be in Holy Garden Angels Church in L’Ardoise, Wednesday, March 7, 2001 at 11 a.m.
Burial will follow in the L’Ardoise Parish Cemetery.

89, L'Ardoise
Julia Loretta (Rita) (Mombourquette) Boulet, 89, a resident of Richmond Villa, formerly of L’Ardoise, passed away peacefully at St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish, on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001.
Born in L’Ardoise on March 13, 1911, the daughter of Charles and Catherine (Briand) Mombourquette.
She will be remembered by sons, Camille (Shirley), L’Ardoise, and Jacques (Linda), St. Peter’s; grandchildren, Charlene (Stanley) Berthier, Lower Sackville, Romona (Blair) Mombourquette, Whitecourt, Alta., Jacqueline Boulet, Lower Sackville and Jason Boulet, Sackville, N.B.; great-grandchildren, Brittany, Sloan, Tylor and Morgan.
She was predeceased by husband, Wilfred Boulet, sister, Ada Martell and brothers, Joe C., Walter and Charles Mombourquette.
Visitation will be held today (Thursday), Feb. 15 and Friday, Feb. 16 from 2-9 p.m. and Saturday from 9-11 a.m. in the L’Ardoise Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 17, in Holy Guardian Angels Church, L’Ardoise at 11 a.m. with Rev. John MacIntyre officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery, L’Ardoise.

Frances Theresa Sampson
87, Lower L'Ardoise
Frances Theresa (Madden) Sampson, 87, passed away suddenly Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Born in Point Michaud, Rich. Co., she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Catherine (Murphy) Madden.
She graduated from Normal College and taught at Balmoral, Point Michaud, Barra Head, St. Peter’s, L’Ardoise Highlands, Brymer School and 14 years at L’Ardoise Consolidated retiring in 1979.
She was a founding member of the L’Ardoise Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Branch 110 and L’Ardoise Social Club and past president of the Home and School Association and the CWL.
She is survived by five sons, Arthur (Rosalie), Lower L’Ardoise, Simon (Anja), Clydsdale, Antigonish Co., Michael (Karen), St. Peter’s, Paul (Susan), Bridgewater, Donald (Kathleen), Coldbrook; sister, Laura Gillan, St. Peter’s; 13 grandchildren, Kenny, Cheryl, Mari-Eileen, Janko, Sheena, Amy, Troy, Anna, Anthony Paul, John, Caitlen, Broady, Bethany Rose. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony; brothers, Edward, Brother Arthur CSC and Donald; sisters, Mary Manolopoulos, Margaret, Mary Rose and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be held today (Friday) 2-9 p.m. at the L’Ardoise Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Holy Guardian Angels Church with Fr. John MacIntyre officiating.
