Ruby Florence Hillis
78, Donkin
Ruby Florence Hillis, 78, of Victoria Haven Nursing Home and formerly of 89 Center Ave., Donkin, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at the nursing home.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Reuben and Amy (Bodger) Morford.
Ruby is survived by her husband Stanley Hillis, daughter Jane, Glace Bay, sons, David, Bedford, N.S., Sheldon, Framboise, grandchildren and pride and joy, Chris, Bonnie, Kyle, Kayla, Lena, and Kelsee. Also surviving are sisters, Olive Kelloway, Rosie Vaters, Mary Kelloway and Amy Slade.
Predeceased by one brother Victor Morford, two sisters, Iris Buchanan, and Gloria Morford, three brothers in infancy David, Robert and Alberta Morford.
Visitation will be held today (Monday) from 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Eric Lynk officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney/Glace Bay Highway.
Donations may be made to the Lung Association of Nova Scotia.
Mary Sarah Millis
99, Donkin
Mary Sarah Millis, 99, of 843 Donkin Highway, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, Glace Bay.
Born in Donkin, she was the daughter of the late Dan and Catherine (MacNeil) MacIntosh.
Mary was an adherent of St. Lukes United Church, Donkin.
Mary is survived by two sons, Donald Millis, Donkin, and Melvin Millis, British Columbia; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, Steven Millis, one sister and four brothers.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A private family burial will take place at a later date.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay.
Marie Briffett
69, Quebec / Donkin, N.S.
Marie Briffett, 69, of 203 3rd Ave., Verdun, Que., passed away Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Verdun General Hospital.
Born in Donkin, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Isabella (Noseworthy) Briffett.
Marie was a resident of Verdun since 1948; a member of St. Willibrordi Parish, Verdun, and a former member of St. Gregory’s Parish in Donkin. Marie was a retired employee with Northern Telecom.
She will be sadly missed by brothers, David, Verdun, Que., Ronald (Margaret), Dieppe, N.B., and Malcolm, Donkin; sister, Gladys (Mrs. Herbert Spurrel), Athleston, Que. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Frank, Joseph, Fred, James and Albert ‘Tony’ and half-brother, Thomas Yetman and a sister, Beatrice.
Visitation and funeral mass celebration at St. Gregory’s Church, Donkin, will be under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, with the date and time to be announced.
Marie Briffett
69, Verdun / Donkin
Marie Briffett, 69, of 203 3rd Ave., Verdun, Que., passed away Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Verdun General Hospital.
Visitation will be in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, today (Thursday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday at 11:30 a.m. in St. Gregory’s Church, Donkin, Fr. Jake Andrea will be officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery at a later date.
Robert (Bobby) Snow
61, Donkin
Robert (Bobby) Snow, 61, of 130 Centre Ave., Donkin, passed away Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Donkin, he was the son of Ernest Sr. and Christina (Hunter) Snow.
Robert worked as a fisherman for many years and was a member and janitor of Branch 5 legion. He was also a member of St. Luke’s United Church, Donkin.
Robert is survived by his wife, Kathy; sons, Alan ‘Patsy’ (Alicia), Donkin, Leroy (Diane), Ontario; daughters, Linda (John) Rhodes, Glace Bay, Lisa (Kenny), Port Morien; brothers, Ernest Jr. (Diane), Walter (Linda), Hugh Brien (Paulette), all of Donkin, and Sandy (Joyce), Ontario; sisters, Martha (James) Davies, Donkin, Mary (Carl) Casperson, Ontario; sister-in-law, Thelma, Ontario; grandchildren, Robbie, Ashley, Kenneth, Yasmin, Brittany and a number of nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his son, Stephen, brother, Freddie and a sister, Sunda Louise in infancy.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Family will receive friends today (Tuesday) Feb. 27 from 7-9 p.m. at Branch 5 legion, Donkin.
Donations may be made to Palliative Care Society, Sydney or to the Cancer Clinic of Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Peter Zorychta
71, Donkin
Peter Zorychta, 71, of Donkin, N.S., died Friday, March 16, 2001 at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Joseph and Edith (Hest) Zorychta.
Peter worked with his father’s trucking company and also at the Miner’s Museum. He also worked on construction as a millwright.
He is survived by five daughters, Mary MacNeil, Bedford, N.S., Nancy Gordon, Saint John, N.B., Deborah Zorychta, Westmount, Janice Maunsell, Oklahoma, U.S., Anne Zorychta, Baffin Island; one son, Kevin Zorychta, Calgary, Alta.
He is also survived by one brother, James Zorychta, Ontario; one sister, Helen Murgola, Inverness, Fla.; and by six grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Herbert Zorychta, Joseph Zorychta, Paul Zorychta; and an infant daughter, Edith Zorychta, in 1973.
There will be no visitation for the late Peter Zorychta. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel Monday (today) at 2 p.m. with Father John Graham officiating. Burial will be in Saint Anne’s Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Juanita J. Thiel
46, Donkin
Juanita Jeanette Thiel, 46, Schooner Pond Road, Donkin, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Thursday, April 26, 2001.
Born in Port Morien, she was a daughter of Tom and Colleen MacDonald.
Juanita was an employee of the Cape Breton Home Care Workers, New Waterford branch, and a member of St. Gregory’s and St. Mary’s Church.
Besides her parents, she is survived by her husband, Greg; daughters, Tanya (Steven) Thiel-White, Halifax, and Holly Dawn, currently attending St. Mary’s University, Halifax; son, Craig, Miramichi, N.B.; sister, Marion MacDonald (fiancee, Leonard Maxwell), Glace Bay; brothers, Donald and Lionel (Theresa), both of Port Morien; granddaughter, Drew Mary White; father-in-law, John Thiel, Donkin; sister-in-law, Gloria (Mac) Spafford, Woodstock, N.B., and nieces and nephews, Terry, Ashley, Justin, Adam, Alisha and Daniel.
There will be no visitation. Cremation will take place. A memorial service will be held at St. Mary’s Church, Port Morien, Sunday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Peter Leblanc officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Children’s Wish Foundation.
