Daniel MacLeod
Sydney River
Daniel MacLeod of 1701 King’s Road, Sydney River, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Friday, Sept. 1, 2000.
He was the son of the late Donald and Christina (MacAskill) MacLeod.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marjorie (Walker) MacLeod. Also survived by daughters, Florence Ann Murphy (Blair), Sydney River, Kym, at home; sons, Craig, Saint John, N.B., Peter, Victoria, B.C. and Philip (Linda), Sydney River; three granddaughters, Tonya and Yolanda Murphy and Christina MacLeod.
He was predeceased by his beloved son, Sandy, brothers, Murray, Stanley, Archie and sister, Florence Sullivan.
Danny was a veteran of the RCAF, he retired from Devco after 42 years. He loved to talk to people, work in his yard, win the lottery, read, game shows and sports, especially baseball, golf and hockey.

Douglas H. Ball
82, Sydney River
Douglas Haig Ball, 82, a resident of Keltic Drive, Sydney River, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Canso, he was a son of the late Murray and Esther (Dickhoff) Ball.
Doug was employed at the Sydney Steel Plant for 43 years prior to retirement. He was a veteran of the Second World War serving overseas with the Canadian Army. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, North Sydney.
Surviving are his wife, Marion (MacLeod) Ball; a son, Sandy (Thelma), Dundas, Ont.; two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Katie; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Arthur, Russell, and Hilton; four sisters, Bertha, Eva, Marion and Helen.
Visitation Tuesday, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service 2 p.m. Wednesday from the Calvary Baptist Church, North Sydney, with Rev. John Hannem officiating. Burial to take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Lung Association.
Edmund John Ratushny
Sydney River
Edmund John Ratushny of King’s Road, Sydney River, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Michael and Katherine (Planetta) Ratushny.
He was a member of the St. Mary’s Polish Parish. He retired from the City of Sydney Fire Department, as captain, after 39 years of service.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice (Kiec) Ratushny; three sons, Kenny, Michael and Bob and a daughter, Marianne. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Jeffrey and Kevin Ratushny, Natascha Ratushny and Billy and Michael Gillis. He was predeceased by three brothers in infancy.
The late Mr. Ratushny will have no visitation.
A funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 15, 2001, in St. Mary’s Polish Church, 11 Wesley St., Whitney Pier, celebrated by Monsignor James MacLean. Burial to follow into Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Polish Parish Building Fund. No flowers by request. Arrangements entrusted to T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
John S. "Jack" Stevens
Sydney River
John Seward ‘Jack’ Stevens, 76, of Sydney River, formerly of East Bay, passed away peacefully, Monday, March 19, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Kingston, Kings County, N.S., he was the son of the late Lester and Mabel (Phinney) Stevens.
Educated at Kingston and Middleton High School, Jack earned his engineering certificate in 1945 from Acadia University and then his bachelor of engineering (civil) from N.S. Tech in 1947. He worked for the Town of Truro as assistant town engineer between 1947-1949, then was employed by the N.S. Department of Highways as resident engineer from 1949-1955. From 1955-1987 Jack was assistant manager, manager then president of Municipal Ready Mix Ltd.
He was a member of Sydney River United Protestant Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees, the Board of Stewards, was a former elder and served on the cemetery committee.
He was past-president of the N.S. Road Builders Association, was past Nova Scotia Vice-President of the Canadian Construction Association, was a life member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia and was a former director of Novaco Inc.
An avid golfer, Jack was a past-president of the Maritime Seniors Golf Association, and was a life member of both the Lingan Golf and Country Club and the Seaview Golf and Country Club. He was also a member of the Sydney Curling Club.
He is survived by his wife, the former Elsie Parker; daughter, Pamela, son-in-law, Dave Johnston and grandchildren, Steven and Lauren Johnston, all of Sydney River; two sisters, Mrs. Frances Hirtle, Three Hills, Alta. and Thelma (Mrs. Jim Pepper), Saskatoon, Sask.
He was predeceased by his sister, Phyllis.
The late Mr. Stevens will have visitation Thursday, March 22, 2001, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Sydney River United Protestant Church with Rev. Allan MacIntosh officiating. Interment in Alfred E. Smith Memorial Cemetery, Howie Centre at a later date.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Kidney Foundation or to a charity of choice.
Myrtle E. Chiasson
84, Sydney River
Myrtle E. Chaisson, 84, of 16 Hemlock St., Sydney River, passed away Thursday, March 29, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Bangor, Me., she was a daughter of the late James and Winnie (MacDonald) Riley.
She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Sydney River and a former member of the parish CWL. Myrtle was an active volunteer and an avid card player.
She is survived by one daughter, Dorothy (Mrs. Allan Harries), Antigonish; two sons, Gordon (Jeannie), St. John’s, Nfld., and David, at home; two sisters, Mrs. Freda Putt, Sydney, and Mrs. Carmella Eikeland, Aurora, Ont.; three grandchildren, Nicole Chaisson, Rochelle Young, Tara Cumby and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, William in 1977, two brothers, Reg and Hollis.
There will be no visitation for the late Mrs. Chaisson. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 2 in Our Lady of Fatima Church with Rev. Norman MacPhee officiating.
Donations may be made to the SPCA.

Robert 'Bob' (Leo) MacNeil
70, Sydney River
Robert ‘Bob’ Leo MacNeil, 70, of Sydney River, passed away peacefully at home Sunday, April 15, 2001.
Born in Sydney, raised in Westmount, he was the son of Joseph Edward and Amelia (Barrie) MacNeil.
Bob worked at Scotsburn Dairy Foods (formerly Brookfield) for 49 years. He started at a young age making ice cream and later became a driver salesman.
Bob was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He had a great love of nature, especially the birds. He also enjoyed baseball, hunting, skating, bowling, cycling and of course, a game of cards. He had a real zest for life.
He is survived by his wife, Marguerite (LeBlanc); sons, Billy (Betty), Sydney, Michael (Rosemary), Port Coquitlam, B.C., Shaun (Marcena), Sydney, and Brian (Judy), Winnipeg; daughter, Carolyn (Bill Penny), London, Ont.; eight grandchildren, Kevin, Kirsty MacNeil, Jeffrey, Jenny and Jamie MacNeil and Kate, Sam and Colin Penny; his brother, Patrick; sisters, Marie, Sadie (Thompson), Catherine, Peggy (Donaldson), Anne (Landry) and Joan (Cunningham).
He was predeceased by his daughter, Sharon Elaine, brothers, John, Edward, Alex (Curt), Donald (Barney), David and sisters, Cecilia (Leveck) and Dorothy (Stewart).
Visitation will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Tuesday, April 17 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Sydney River, at 11 a.m. with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall.
