Donald Walter Dowling
85, Ingonish
Mr. Donald (Don) Walter Dowling, 85, of Ingonish, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at Buchanan Memorial Hospital, Neil’s Harbour.
Born in North Sydney, he was the adopted son of the late Cranzie and Carolyn (Meade) Dowling.
He was a member of St. John’s Anglican Church, Ingonish, and a retired Parks Canada employee with 37 years of service. He was a veteran of the Second World War serving in Europe and was a founding member of Br. #85 Royal Canadian Legion, Neil’s Harbour.
He is survived by his wife, the former Alice Ingraham, sons, John Frances (Gloria) and Reed (Diane), both of Ingonish, sister Hattie MacDonald in Aspy Bay, three granddaughters, Lori, Keri and Michelle LeBlanc, grandson Shawn, great-grandson Ian and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his biological mother Jennifer Maloney, brothers Willson and Dave and sisters, Helen and Ester.
Visitation was held Sunday in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Ingonish. Funeral servives will be held today at 2 p.m. in St. John’s Anglican Church, with Rev. Chris McCann officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Ingonish.
Memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation or the charity of choice.
Robert (Bobby) Fricker
54, Ingonish
Robert (Bobby) Fricker, 54, of Ingonish, passed away on Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, in the University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor, Mich.
Born in England, he was the son of Rose and the late Robert Fricker, Neil’s Harbour.
Bobby was a member of St. Peter’s Parish, Ingonish. He was an avid golfer of Cape Breton Highlands and was employed for 27 years as a linesman with N.S. Power until his retirement in April 2000. After his retirement he was employed with Henkels and McCoy Inc.
Surviving are his wife, Aldona (Capstick) Fricker and son, Michael (Louisa).
Visitation for the late Mr. Fricker will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3 in Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Ingonish. Funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Peter’s Church, Ingonish with Rev. John Morrison officiating. Cremation to follow.
Donations may be made to Buchanan Memorial Hospital, Neil’s Harbour.
Thomas Munroe Blair Whitty
19, Ingonish Beach
Mr. Thomas Munroe Blair Whitty, Ingonish Beach, died suddenly on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, as a result of a motor vehicle accident.
Born in Halifax on Sept. 14, 1981, he was the son of Sandra MacDonald and the late Barry Whitty.
Thomas graduated from Cabot High School in Neil’s Harbour and was a 2nd year student at St. Mary’s University, Halifax. N.S. He was a special friend to many. Thomas enjoyed golf, tennis, skiing, and TV. He was an active member of the Highlands Links Golf Club and a dedicated junior ski racer at Cape Smokey. He was a level one ski instructor and enjoyed facing new challenges.
Surviving besides his mother is one sister Michelle Barbrick, Fredericton, his special family, Tom, Aggie, Wendy, Doran, and Sean Donovan, Ingonish Beach, his paternal grandfather George Whitty as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was predeceased by his father Barry, paternal grandmother Gertrude Whitty and maternal grandparents D. Munro and Muriel MacDonald.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the Fillmore & Whitman Funeral Home, Ingonish. A celebration of life will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Peter’s Church, Ingonish Beach, with Rev. John Morrison officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Peter’s Parish Memorial Fund, Ingonish Beach, Vict. Co., N.S., B0C 1L0, or a charity of choice.
Grace Best
90, Ingonish
Mrs. Grace L. Best, 90, of Ingonish, Victoria County, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at the Buchanan Memorial Health Complex, Neil’s Harbour.
Born in Ingonish, she was the daughter of the late John and Ida (Murphy) Rideout, and was a member of Ingonish United Church.
She is survived by sons, David, Ingonish, Stuart (Wilma), Ingonish; her sister, Jennie Rideout, Halifax; grandchildren, Gregory, Graham, Kevin, Pam, Kenny; great-grandchildren, Karlie, Tanner, Cassidy, Christopher, Dougie, Ian, Meagan, Alisha; nieces, Marilyn, Ingonish, Irma, New Brunswick; a nephew, Buddy, Ingonish and daughter-in-law, Mabel.
She was predeceased by her husband, Albert, son Ian, sisters, Marion Day, Babe Driscoll and her brother, Robert.
There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Ingonish United Church with Rev. Rose-Hannah Gaskin officiating assisted by Rev. Chris McCann. Burial will follow in the United Church Cemetery, Ingonish, under the direction of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North of Smokey Palliative Care or to the Buchanan Memorial Health Complex.
Vera May Lefriend
63, Ingonish
Vera May Lefriend, 63, of Ingonish, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
Born at Neil’s Harbour, she was the daughter of the late George and Susanah (Rogers) Fricker.
She was a member of St. John Anglican Church, Ingonish. In her early years she had been actively involved as a leader in the GA, was a Sunday School teacher, and with youth groups. Prior to her retirement, she worked at the Glenghorm Resort and the Ingonish Co-Op.
She is survived by her husband, S.S. Lefriend, Sydney and was the loving mother of daughters, Rosene (Donald), Sydney, Pamela (Darryl), Ingonish; sons, Dean (Mary), Ingonish, and Rickey (Michelle), Ottawa. She is also survived by sisters, Theresa, Truro, Alice, Dartmouth, Bessie, Halifax, Alma, Lower Sackville; brothers, George, Mulgrave, Stuart, Ingonish; grandchildren, Kyle, Morgan, Michael, Alison, Kenny and Bretton, and a special niece ‘Wanda’, as well as several other nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brother, Harris and sister, Mary.
As Mom asked to be remembered more in life rather than death, there will be no visitation as cremation has taken place.
By Mom’s request, a private family interment will take place Thursday, Jan. 25, in St. Andrew’s Cemetery, Neil’s Harbour, with Rev. Chris McCann officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or St. Andrew’s Church Memorial Fund.
Emma Jane Donovan
95, Ingonish Beach
Husband of Maurice, Emma Jane Donovan, 95, of Ingonish Beach, passed away, March 3, 2001, peacefully at Highland Manor Nursing Home in Neil’s Harbour.
Born, March 17, 1905, she was the daughter of the late James Vincent Donovan and Mary (Rambeau) Donovan.
She was predeceased by an infant son and a son Wilfred, late of Albert Bridge, and a foster son Billy Scullen, late of North Sydney.
She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church of Ingonish Beach.
She is survived by her husband of 76 years, Maurice Francis Donovan, and by eight daughters, five sons and two foster children.
Charlotte (Mrs. Lawrence Gillis, Mira); Emily (Mrs. Martin MacLellan, Mira); Edna (Mrs. Joe MacDonald, Fredericton); Vivian (Mrs. Bruno Lawatis, Sydney Mines), Francis (Mrs. Colin Gillis, Sydney), Eleanor (Mrs. Pearson Richardson, Halifax), Anne-Marie (Mrs. Ross Keizer, Dartmouth); Kay (Mrs. John Robichaud, Halifax), Clyburn (Margarite), Art (Lillian), Phillip (Georgina), all of Ingonish, Kyte (Ann), Dartmouth, and Pat of Sydney, Joseph Scullen of Ontario and Frank Smith of New Victoria Mines; 63 grandchildren, 100 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
A respected wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
A woman who took great pride in her family. She lived with dignity and died with dignity.
Visitation was Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Ingonish.
Funeral mass will be held on Monday, March 5, 2001, at 11 a.m., in St. Peter’s Church Ingonish, Reverend John Morrison officiating.
