Ralph Joseph Luke Julian

Ralph Joseph Luke Julian, 62, of 206 Shore Road, Eskasoni, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at home.
Born at Afton, N.S., he was the son of Dr. Margaret (Paul) Johnson and the late Albert Julian. He was a member of Holy Family Parish, Eskasoni.
Surviving are his wife Cecelia Marie (Johnson); four daughters, Eileen, Ottawa, Marie, Big Cove, N.B., Rachel, Toronto, Ont., Ralci Anne, Eskasoni; a step-daughter Mary, Eskasoni; five sons, Noel, Eskasoni, Lawrence, Pictou, Audie, Eskasoni, Michael, Eskasoni, Brian Joseph, Membertou; six sisters, Joan Marshall, Chapel Island, Lottie Mae, Eskasoni, Elizabeth (Ryan) Paul, Eskasoni, Carol Marie Marshall, Chapel Island, Patricia Dennis, Eskasoni, Mary Googoo, Eskasoni; six brothers, Albert Julian, Gerald, Dereck, Prentice, Gerard, and Thomas Johnson, all of Eskasoni; 21 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by his sister Linda, a brother Arthur, step-father John T. Johnson, and a son Aaron Terry Johnson.
The late Mr. Julian will have visitation after 7 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the family residence, 206 Shore Road, Eskasoni. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Holy Family Church, Eskasoni, Rev. Robert MacNeil officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
John Ignatius Poulette
Newborn, Eskasoni
Baby John Ignatius Poulette of Eskasoni died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney, he was the son of Margaret Rose Poulette and John Ignatius Bernard of Eskasoni.
He is survived by his maternal grandparents, Benjamin and Bridget Poulette and his paternal grandmother, Jesse Sylliboy. Also surviving are numerous aunts and uncles.
He was predeceased by one sister, Madeline Rose Poulette and by his paternal grandfather, John Ignatius Bernard.
There will be visitation held for Baby Poulette at the home of his mother, 21 Mountain Rd., Eskasoni, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. with a burial service to follow in Holy Family Parish Cemetery with Rev. Robert MacNeil officiating.
Arrangements under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
Martha Matthews
77, Eskasoni
Martha Matthews, 77, of 4218 Shore Rd., Eskasoni, passed away Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Michael Francis and Mary Agnes (Jeddore) Matthews.
She was a member of Holy Family Parish, Eskasoni.
In her earlier years she worked in the Eskasoni Co-Op Store and for over 20 years she lived in Ottawa and was employed with the federal government. Following retirement, she returned to Eskasoni in 1991 and during that time, Martha was able to enjoy her family, friends and travelling the Maritimes.
Surviving are four sisters, Catherine (Roddie) Stevens, Eskasoni, Sr. Veronica, Eskasoni Convent, Elizabeth (Phil) Berube and Michelle, both of Wolfville. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews living in Eskasoni, Mississauga and Sudbury.
She was predeceased by three sisters, Theresa, Jeanette and Mary, two brothers in infancy, John William and Murray.
The late Miss Matthews will have visitation at the family residence, 4218 Shore Rd., Eskasoni, after 7 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Holy Family Church with Rev. Robert MacNeil officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery, Eskasoni.

Irene "Morning Star" Herney
69, Eskasoni
Irene Herney, 69, of 5122 Shore Road, Eskasoni, passed away Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Eskasoni, she was the daughter of the late Michael R. and Mary Bella (Herney) Denny. She was a member of Holy Family Parish, Eskasoni. Irene was very involved in the traditional culture and ways of the Mi’kmaq. She took an active role in continuing these traditions in all the communities, particularly during Pow Wow gatherings where she was an eagle staff carrier, and at most other important events. She was also known as a crafts person who specialized in basket weaved dolls. As well, Irene was knowledgeable in traditional healing with herbal medicines.
She is survived by three daughters, Eileen, Ottawa, Ont., Marie Jane, Big Cove, N.B., Rachel, Toronto; four sons, Noel, Eskasoni, Audie (Wanda), Eskasoni, Michael at home and Lawrence, Pictou Landing; four sisters, Euphemia “Bema” Miller and Ruby Poulin, both of Augusta, Maine, Jessie Denny, Afton, N.S. and Georgina Doucette, Eskasoni; one brother, Roy Albert “Jake” Denny, Eskasoni; 29 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph J. Julian; a son, Ralmik David Julian; two sisters, Leona and Mary Rita, and a brother, Matthew.
The late Mrs. Herney will have visitation on Tuesday after 7 p.m. at the family residence on Shore Road, Eskasoni. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Holy Family Church with Rev. Robert MacNeil officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery, Eskasoni.
Louis J. ‘Jumbo’ Marshall
60, Eskasoni
Louis J. ‘Jumbo’ Marshall, 60, of Shore Road, Eskasoni, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, very suddenly.
Born at North Sydney, he was the son of the late Joseph Peter and Judina (Christmas) Marshall.
He was a member of Holy Family Parish, Eskasoni. Louis worked for 12 years as a medical taxi driver and before that as an oyster fisherman with the Eskasoni fisheries. He also served for many years as a volunteer with the Eskasoni Volunteer Fire Department. ‘Jumbo’ was an ardent sports fan, especially hockey.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving are his companion, Viney Sapier; three daughters, Patty Simon, Wagmatcook, Pauline Dennis and Elisha Sapier, both of Eskasoni; three sons, Louis Jr. (Marjorie), Eskasoni, Michael Sapier, Eskasoni, and Vincent Goo Goo, at home; 11 grandchildren, William, Judina, Joseph, Susie J., Andrew, Grant, Tad, Whitney, Michael, Mary and Kateri; and by two nieces and three nephews.
Predeceased by his wife, the former Susie Dennis, his brother, Francis Joseph.
The late Mr. Marshall will have visitation today (Thursday) after 7 p.m. at 4686 Shore Rd., Eskasoni.
Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Holy Family Church, Rev. Robert MacNeil officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery, Eskasoni, under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
Matilda (Dennis) Googoo
68, Eskasoni
Matilda Googoo, 68, Eskasoni, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Mary (Dennis) Googoo.
She was a member of Holy Family Parish, Eskasoni. Matilda worked with Holy Family parish and the Holy Family parish shrine for several years. She also volunteered with the Holy Family Parish Cemetery committee.
She is survived by 12 daughters, Mary Isabel, Clara, Laura, Sheila, Florence, Rose Ann, Anita, Doreen, Linda, Barbara, Karen and Trudy, six sons, Roderick, Kenny, Raymond, Ryan, Francis ‘Mick’ and Stephen, all of Eskasoni; 75 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren and 35 great-great-grandchildren.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was predeceased by her husband, Roddie Denny Googoo in 1993; one son, Robert; two daughters, Annie Bridget and Susie Jane.
The late Mrs. Googoo will have visitation after 7 p.m. Saturday, March 31 at the family residence, 91 Horseshoe Dr., Eskasoni.
Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 3 in Holy Family Church, Eskasoni with Fr. Robert MacNeil officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
