Gordon John (Dingy) Spencer
83, Marion Bridge
Gordon John (Dingy) Spencer, 83, of Oakfield Dr., Marion Bridge, passed away early Saturday morning, Nov. 11, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late John Y. and Edna (Bezanson) Spencer.
He had been a long-time employee as purchasing agent with Sydney Steel Corporation and the Cape Breton Development Corporation retiring in 1976. And up until a few years ago, he was manager of Hardwood Hill Cemetery. He belonged to the Masonic Lodge and was Past Master of Sydney Lodge #84, Past High Priest of Prince of Wales Chapter #10, and members of Cape Breton Preceptory #43, Philae Shrine Temple AAONMS, Nova Scotia Court #153 of the Royal Order of Jesters.
He was also involved with the Mira and District Adult Community Recreation Center in Marion Bridge. For many years he was an avid bowler and had been an a long-time member of the Sydney Curling Club.
Besides his wife Evelyn Jordan Ferguson, he is survived by daughters, Gwyneth (Lester) Penny and Edna Huntington, of Sydney, sons, Douglas (Lynn), Surrey, B.C., and Peter (Ann Marie), Hills Road, Albert Bridge, grandchildren, David, Gordon, Scott, Alexander, and Colin Huntington, Janet Penny, Anne Marie Nicole, Charlie Spencer, Carrie Knox and Marty Spencer, and eight great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Dora MacDonald, Stewiacke, N.S. and Nora Spencer, Bedford.
He was predeceased by his first wife Isabel Peverley, sons, John Robert in infancy and Harold Edward, sisters, Dorothy Spencer and Muriel Richardson, a brother William.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Monday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with a Masonic Family Service at 6:45 p.m. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethel United Church, Marion Bridge. A reception will follow at the Marion Bridge Community Center. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery, Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hardwood Hill Cemetery Fund, Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, or any charity.
Cecil David Hussey
89, Marion Bridge
Cecil David Hussey, 89, of MacGillivray Guest Home, Sydney, formerly of Marion Bridge, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at the guest home, surrounded by his family.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late William and Sarah (Simpson) Hussey. He was a retired carpenter from the Fortress of Louisbourg; a member and elder of Bethel United Church, the board of stewards, a choir member, member of Mira Fiddlers, and Mira and District Adult Recreation Centre.
Cecil is survived by wife, Frances (Huntington); son, Barrie (Janie), Huntington; daughter, Larkyn Gillis, Huntington; four sisters, Hazel MacDonald, Reserve, Elva Eisenhaur, Marion Bridge, Marion Lewis, Hillside and Audrey MacDonald, Marion Bridge; two brothers, William and Earl, of Marion Bridge; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Eva MacLeod; two brothers, Harvey and Roy.
Visitation will be held today (Tuesday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m., Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Bethel United Church, Marion Bridge, with Rev. Lew Crewe officiating, Burial will take place in Huntington Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, MacGillivray Guest Home, or Bethel United Church Building Fund.
Robert Francis Boutilier CD1 (Boots)
68, Marion Bridge, N.S.
Robert Francis Boutilier (Boots), 68, of Hillside Road, Marion Bridge, passed away the Thursday, 12th of April, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, Bob was the son of the late Jessie Boutilier (MacNeil).
Retiring from the RCAF/CE after a 25-year career, Bob returned home to his beloved Cape Breton in 1981.
Initially settling in Howie Centre, Bob worked as the caretaker of the Sydney YMCA; a short time later moving to Marion Bridge and beginning what was to become a 10-year position at Wilson’s Home Hardware in Sydney.
Bob was an avid fan of all kinds of music from classic to jazz but closest to his heart was Cape Breton fiddle music.
He is survived by his wife, the former Jacqulyn (Lee) Lynk; two sons, Vincent (Tina), British Columbia, Wayne (Sheila), Labrador; three grandchildren; three sisters, Mabel MacFadgen, Marion Bridge, Agnes MacNeil, Westmount, Jan Pledge, Sydney.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, Sunday, April 15 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with funeral service in the chapel Monday, April 16, 1 p.m. with the Reverends Eric Lynk and Louis Ihasz officiating.
Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to Canadian Cancer Society or charity of choice.
Dolena Katherine Shaw
81, Marion Bridge
Dolena Katherine Shaw, 81, of Marion Bridge, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Point Michaud, she was a daughter of the late Kenneth D. and Mary (Morrison) MacAskill.
Dolena was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
She was a charge attendant at the Cape Breton Hospital for 15 years and a member of the Branch 12 Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
Surviving are her son, John K., Kitchener, Ont.; sisters, Mabel MacKillop, Sydney, Margaret MacLeod, St. Peter’s and Lexena MacKillop, Grand River; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; eight nephews and two nieces.
Dolena was predeceased by her husband, Neil J., a sister in infancy, brothers, John A., Donald and one in infancy.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel Friday at 11 a.m., with Pastor Kevin Richardson officiating. Interment in Grand River Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of one’s choice.
Aubrey George Walker
79, Marion Bridge
Aubrey George Walker, 79, of Big Ridge, Marion Bridge, passed away peacefully Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Big Ridge, he was a son of the late David N. and Martha (Sullivan) Walker.
He was a member and Elder of St. Columba Presbyterian Church, Marion Bridge. He worked at Nova Scotia Power for 37 years, retiring in 1986.
He is survived by one daughter, Dianne (Michael) Byrne; four sons, Wayne (Dale), Aubrey Jr., Kent (Debi) and Neil (Cathy), all of Marion Bridge; 11 grandchildren, Doreen, Douglas, J.R., Vanessa, Stacey, Trevor, Tammy, Deanna, Liam, Kristen, Steven; one sister, Jennie (Walter) Dixon, Big Ridge; and a brother, James (Pearl) Big Ridge.
Aubrey was predeceased by his wife, the former Sadie MacLean; a son, Phillip, in 1957; two sisters, Margaret and Agnes; two brothers, Neil and Charles.
Visitation was held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Sunday, 7-9 p.m. and will be held Monday, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service in St. Columba Presbyterian Church Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Kevin Richardson officiating. Interment in Riverview Cemetery, Marion Bridge.
Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
Peter Carlton MacKeigan
86, Marion Bridge
Peter Carlton (Carl) MacKeigan, 86, of Marion Bridge, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Marion Bridge, he was the son of the late John P. and Beatrice (Bayliss) MacKeigan. He retired from Sysco after 40 years service as a foreman of the pipe shop. He was a founding member of Marion Bridge Volunteer Fire Department.
Survived by a daughter Pearl (Russell) Huntington, a son Ross (Archena), both of Marion Bridge, three sisters, Pearl Walker, Marion Bridge, Irene Petrie, Sydney, and Anna MacMullin, Marion Bridge. Also surviving are nine grandsons, Buddy, Kenneth, Darryl, Trevor, Kelly MacKeigan, Carl, Douglas, Darren, Brent Huntington, two great-granddaughters, Jessica MacKeigan and Emma Huntington.
Predeceased by his wife Irene (Hewett), two sons, Buddy and Beverly, and a brother Neil.
Visitation will take place on Monday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the late Mr. MacKeigan’s residence, 2599 Hillside Road. Funeral Tuesday 2 p.m. at St. Columba Presbyterian Church, Marion Bridge. Burial at Riverview Cemetery, Marion Bridge. Paster Kevin Richardson and Rev. Lewis Crewe conducting service.
