William Archibald MacLean
89, Port Hawkesbury
William Archibald MacLean, age 89, passed away at the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home, where he resided for two years. A former resident of Richmond Villa, St. Peter’s for 13 years and formerly of Point Tupper, died on Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at the home.
Born in Kings Road, Port Hastings, son of the late William John and Annie Belle (MacLean) MacLean. He is a retired CNR brakeman, a member of St. David’s United Church, Port Hastings, a member of Solomon Lodge No. 46. He received his 50-year jewel and 60-year bar. He was a former deputy issuer of marriage licences. Surviving are daughter, Lana Belle MacLean, Port Hastings; sister, Ella MacDonald, Walnut Creek, Calif.; two nieces and two nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 41 years, the former Lillian Belle Langley (1996), son, William John Langley MacLean (1983), sister, Alice Sanders, brothers, Everett Allan, Allan in infancy. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral service 2 p.m. Sunday in St. David’s United Church, Rev. Keith Adams officiating, assisted by Rev. Bill MacLennan. Members of Solomon Lodge No. 46 to meet at the funeral home at 7 p.m. this evening for Masonic Service. Burial will be in St. David’s Church Cemetery at a later date. Memorial to St. David’s United Church or Point Tupper Heritage Association.

Sarah lsabel (Long) Day, 74, 122 Old Sydney Rd., Port Hawkesbury, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at home, surrounded by her family, following a courageous battle with kidney disease. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, whose life was totally devoted to her family. She was most happy when she was surrounded by her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Bras d’Or and Port Hawkesbury. Born in Bras d’Or, she was a daughter of the late George and Jennie (Cormier) Long. She will be sadly missed by her loving husband of 57 years, Gordon; children, Gail (Joe) Vugts, Sandra (Glen) Livingstone, Janie (Gerald) Tremblay, Rose Mary (Glen) MacDougall, Eugene (Pat), Paul (Nancy), all of Port Hawkesbury, Carmen (Cathy), Lower Sackville, Jimmy (Jane), Wendell (Jean), both of Stellarton, Judy (Joe) Jessome, Bras d’Or, Eric (Rosalie), Louisdale; 26 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Ester Jessome, Bras d’Or, Muriel (Carey), Florence. She was predeceased by her brother, Emerson Long, sister, Dorothy Carey, half-brother, George Long Jr., half-sisters, Elizabeth (Tobin) MacIntosh, Margaret Murphy. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today. Vigil service 8:30 p.m. this evening, all in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury, Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Burial in parish cemetery. Family flowers only. Ewen Stewart MacKeigan, 97, Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home, formerly of Kimberley Drive, Sydney, passed away at the nursing home, Monday, Oct. 23, 2000. Born on Horne’s Road, he was the son of the late John and Mary (MacKenzie) MacKeigan. Stewart was a veteran of the Second World War and retired from Sydney Steel. He was a founding member and Elder of Sydney River United Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge, East Gate No. 127, the Scottish Rite Valley of Sydney, the Cape Breton Lodge of Perfection, the Isle Royale Chapter of Rose Croix, the N.S. Consistory, and the Shrine Philae Temple. He was also an avid snowmobiler and boater. Surviving are his daughters, Margaret Peters, Florida and Eunice Murray, Collingwood, Ont.; son, Robert “Bob”, Port Hawkesbury; brother, Donald, Mira; eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Gertrude in 1994; a son, John Warren in infancy; a sister, Margaret and brothers, Angus and James. Visitation was held at Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port HawkesburyTuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and will be held today in Sydney Memorial Chapel from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel Thursday, 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Alan McIntosh officiating. Interment in Riverside Cemetery, Horne’s Road. A Masonic Service will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, 6:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sydney River United Church, Masonic Lodge or the Shriner’s Club.
John Arthur ‘Art’ Cluett
79, Port Hawkesbury
John Arthur ‘Art’ Cluett, 79, of Port Hawkesbury, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was a son of the late Jacob G. and Agnes M. (Carmichael) Cluett. Art retired in 1980 as the manager of the Port Hawkesbury Branch of the Royal Bank, after having served in Shubenacadie, Elmsdale, Amherst, Guysborough, Sydney Mines and North Sydney. He was an avid sports enthusiast having served on the executive of the Strait Pirates Hockey Club for many years. He was one of the founding organizers of the Port Hawkesbury Little League Baseball. He was past president of the Port Hawkesbury Lions Club; past chairman for the Strait Area Canadian Cancer Society and Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. He was an adherent of St. Mark’s United Church, Port Hawkesbury. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43. He was a veteran of the Second World War having served on the Royal Canadian Naval Ships, Uganda and St. Claire. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, the former Edith MacLeod; daughter, Cora Leigh (Paul) Dignan, Scotland; sons, Jake, Port Hawkesbury, Bob (Joyce), Yellowknife, N.W.T., Rick (Anne), Port Hawkesbury, Dave (Nancy), Port Hawkesbury; grandchildren, Olivia Dignan, Sara, Jenny, Allan, Matthew, Genevieve, Oliver, Kim, Ian; great-granddaughter, Jenna. He was predeceased by a brother in infancy. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Legion service 7 p.m. Saturday evening, all in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral service 2 p.m. Sunday, in St. Mark’s United Church, Rev. Debbie Aiken officiating. Burial in the Southbrook Cemetery at a later date. Amelia Blanche (Lemoine) Edwards, 85, of Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home, formerly of Louisbourg, passed away Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. Born in Newfoundland, she was the daughter of the late William and Liza Lemoine. She was a member of the First United Church, Louisbourg. She is survived by her husband, Carl; daughter, Kaye MacIntyre (Bugs); two sons, George Townsend (Rose) and Jimmy Townsend (Anne), Catalone; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Russell Townsend; granddaughters, Vesta Wadden and Sonya Townsend; and grandson, Earnie Townsend. Her remains will be resting at the First United Church, Louisbourg, where visitation will take place today (Tuesday) from 1-2 p.m. Funeral service will follow at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Austin officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of W.A. Chant Funeral Home, Louisbourg.

John Angus MacLean, 82, Port Hawkesbury, formerly of River Denys, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, in the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home.
Born in River Denys, he was a son of the late Sam A. and Jessie (MacCormack) MacLean. He was a retired crusher operator for Georgia Pacific Corp., Big Brook. A former member and deputy chief of the Valley Mills and District Volunteer Fire Department. A veteran of the Second World War and a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Port Hawkesbury. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving are daughter, Marguerite Hendsbee (Lawrence Kennedy), Port Hawkesbury; sons, Eddie (Gloria Power), Truro, Duncan (Millie), River Denys; special friend, Charlotte MacDonald; several nieces and nephews; grandchildren, Norman, Karen, Shawn, Ryan and Shane; great-grandchildren, Christine, Austin, Celine, Brenden and Katie. Predeceased by his wife, the former Margaret MacLean, brothers, Hughie, Archie, Norman Dan, John D., Roddie and Joseph; sisters, Lizzie, Flora Catherine and Sarah Mary; son-in-law, Donald Hendsbee. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. today (Saturday) and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday and a vigil service held at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, all in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass 11 a.m. Monday in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Burial in St. Dionysius Cemetery at a later date. Harriet Urquhart, 79, loving wife of Lloyd Urquhart of Port Hawkesbury, died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Born in 1921 in Sunnyside, Richmond County, Harriet was the youngest and last living member of the family of Edwin W. and Katherine C. (Langley) Peeples. She was an adherent of St. Mark’s United Church, Port Hawkesbury. During her teen and adult years she lived with her sister, Blanche and Willie S. Urquhart, Grand Anse, where she helped raise her nieces, Catherine White, Sydney (deceased), Joan Spurrell, Brockville, Ont. (deceased), Bunny Urquhart, West Bay; mother of Robert (Giselle) Urquhart, Dundee; grandmother of Nathan, Scott and Landon; mother of Lois (Ken) Musselman, Collingwood, Ont.; grandmother of Lyndall D’arcey and Joey-Lynn; aunt to many caring nieces and nephews, all of the Peeples families of Point Tupper. She was predeceased by sisters, Hazel, Jennie and Blanche Urquhart, brothers, Henry, Earl, Byron, Ralph and Herbie. Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. today in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Thursday in St. Mark’s United Church, Rev. Debbie Aiken officiating. Cremation to follow. Burial in the Southbrook Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Strait Richmond Palliative Care Society or charity of your choice.
