Douglas Joseph MacLeod
70, Coxheath
Douglas Joseph MacLeod, 70, of 169 Heathview Dr., Coxheath, passed away suddenly on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late John D. MacLeod and Elizabeth MacMullin.
He was a devoted member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Sydney River.
Doug was well known during his years of hockey with the Sydney Millionaires and as a trucker and driving instructor.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine (Carroll); five daughters, Sharon (Glen Tutty), Cathy (Kenny Messervey), Irene (Kevin McConnell), Maureen (Ray Carroll), Lee Anne (Simon Archer); a son, Dougie (Louise); a sister, Shirley Wludyka (Rich); three brothers, John (Dodie), Halifax, Roy (Audrey), Surrey, B.C., Donnie (Helen), Blackett’s Lake.
He will be forever and sadly missed by his family and especially by his grandchildren Lynn and Jan, Lisa, Kenny, and Andrea, Evan and Tyler, Meghan, Garry, and Jennifer, to whom he will lovingly be remembered as Cookie.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Douglas Parker.
Visitation for the late Mr. MacLeod will be held on Tuesday 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney.
Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Sydney River, with Rev. Norman McPhee officiating.
Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation as expressions of sympathy.
Russell A. Vardy
69, Coxheath
Russell A. Vardy, 69, Coxheath, passed away peacefully at home Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Russell and Sadie (Thomas) Vardy.
He was employed at Sydney Steel for 42 years retiring in 1989.
He was a member the Sydney Pensioners Club for many years.
He will be sadly missed by his wife of 48 years, the former Beulah Warren; two daughters, Glenda (Les) Dell, P.E.I. and Sharon (Carl) Mercer, Sydney River; four grandchildren, Keah and Terry Michael Dell; Lisa and Emily Mercer, who were the apple of his eye; two sisters, Theresa (Francis) Pettipas, Sydney and Catherine Leonard, Nfld.; two brothers, Raymond (Neasie) Vardy and Lorway (Margaret) Vardy, both from New Waterford; sister-in-law, Lorraine, Ontario and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Harold and Danny, two sisters in infancy and a grandson, Sandy.
There will be no visitation.
Cremation has taken place.
Arrangements under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Mark’s Church, Coxheath, with Archdeacon Weldon Smith officiating.
Interment will be at a later date.
The family will meet with family and friends following the service in the Parish Centre.
Donations may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Oncology Department or Palliative Care.
Rita Brown
88, Coxheath
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Rita passed away peacefully at home in Coxheath on Thursday, March 15, 2001.
Born in La Have, Lunenburg County, Rita moved to C.B. in 1995.
She was an avid quilter and won many awards in her younger years.
She became a member of the C.B. Quilters Association and she made many friends in that craft.
She and her husband, Merrill operated a greenhouse in the Forties Settlement, Lunenburg County and this business was an outlet for her passion for gardening.
Rita was a member of St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Coxheath and she maintained her membership at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, in West La Have.
Rita is survived by her daughters, Phyllis (Brian) Conrod, Ethel (Kenneth) Hardiman; son, Albert (Doris) Cook; sisters, Ada (Johan) Jorgensen, Loretta (Edward) Howie; brother, Brady (Ramona) Himmelman; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Merrill Brown of the Forties Settlement and a daughter, Shirley (Ernest) Theosopholsis, sisters, Margaret Himmelman, Elfleda Kaiser, Emma Hebditch, sister-in-law, Helen, brother, Fletcher, stepbrothers, Thomas, William, James, Harlen Butler; brothers-in-law, Victor Kaiser, Albert Hebditch and Johan Jorgensen.
Funeral services will be held today (Friday) at 2 p.m. in St. Marks Anglican Church, Coxheath, Rev. Harold Brown officiating.
The body will be transferred to Sweeney’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater where visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Saturday.
Funeral services will be held at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in West La Have, 2 p.m. Sunday, March 18, Rev. Michael Hawkins officiating.
Interment in West La Have Cemetery, Lunenburg County.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Ada Florence Goode
Coxheath
Ada Goode, 85, of Coxheath, formerly of Boularderie, passed away Saturday, April 28, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in North Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Edmund and Celina (Taylor) MacKinnon.
She will be sadly missed by her two sons, Byron (Faye), Grand Lake Road, and James (Marguerite), Dutch Brook; three daughters, Celina (Joe Rozicki), Sydney Forks, Ruby (Charles MacPherson), Coxheath, with whom she resided, Florence (Donnie Hill), Boularderie; a special granddaughter, Debbie, Ontario.
Also by special step-son, David, in Ohio; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; a nephew, Duncan MacKeigan, Sydney Mines; and a niece, Elizabeth Drake, Ontario.
She was predeceased by her husband, Chester, in 1994; a brother, Byron, in 1963; her grandson ‘Little Joe’ Rozicki; and a great-granddaughter, Natasha Goode.
There will be no visitation.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel.
A memorial service will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Tuesday 2 p.m. with Rev. Ritchie Robinson officiating.
Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
No flowers by request of the family.
Memorial may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
