Sister Michaella Browne
81, Antigonish
Sister Michaella Browne, 81, a Sister of St. Martha of Bethany Motherhouse, died at Bethany on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000.
Born in Grand Falls, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Annie (Brennan) Browne.
Sister Michaella entered the Sisters of St. Martha in August of 1941.
Sister served in clerical and homemaking fields in the early years of her religious life and later in parish ministry.
Sister served at St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish; St. Rita Hospital, Sydney; St. Alphonse Convent, Blairmore; Mount Carmel Convent, Canmore; Mineral Springs Hospital, Banff; Martha Center, Lethbridge; St. Michael’s Hospital, Lethbridge; St. Elizabeth Convent, Calgary, and at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Convent, Kamloops, B.C.
In 1995, Sister retired to Bethany.
She is survived by one sister, Marie Browne, of Grand Falls, Nfld.
She was predeceased by a brother Michael and two sisters, Eileen Browne and Lucy Regan.
The remains are resting at Bethany Motherhouse where a Bible Vigil will be held today (Monday) at 7:30 p.m.
Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 2 p.m. in the Bethany Chapel.
Arrangements are under the direction of C.L. Curry Funeral Services Ltd.
Sister Mary Maurice Brocklehurst
94, Antigonish
Sr. Mary Maurice Brocklehurst, 94, a Sister of St. Martha, Bethany Motherhouse, Antigonish, died on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, at Bethany.
Born in Whitney Pier, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Anne (King) Brocklehurst.
Sr. Mary Maurice is the last surviving member of her family.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Ethel Cruickhanks, Muriel MacDonald and Sr. Lillian (Mary Carmelita) CSM, and by her brothers, Harry, Maxwell, and Fr. Charles, CSSR.
She entered the congregation on May 24, 1927, and began her ministry the pioneering field of homemaking at Mercy Hospital, Regina, and St. Michael’s Hospital, Broadview.
She served, also, as a family service helper at St. Martha’s Hostel, Regina, Sask.
After studies in music in 1931, she began her career as a music teacher at the Motherhouse in Antigonish; Little Flower Institute, Bras d’Or; St. Charles Convent, Dominion; Star of the Sea Convent, Canso.
In 1951 she obtained a teaching diploma from the Truro Normal College and taught in the primary grades in Eskasoni and Main-a-Dieu, C.B., St. Andrew’s, Antigonish County, and Picture Butte, Alta.
Retiring from teaching in 1972, she offered remedial help to students in the Lethbridge area.
She returned to Antigonish in 1980.
The remains are resting at Bethany Motherhouse, where a Bible Vigil will be held Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 7:30 p.m.
Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, at 2 p.m.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of MacIsaac’s Funeral Home.
Joseph Thomas Chiasson
77, Antigonish
Joseph Thomas Chiasson, 77, of Archie Street, Antigonish, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at home.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Denis and Marie (Muise) Chiasson.
Joe graduated from St. F.X. in 1944 with a BA and in 1946 with a BEd as well as a masters in continuing education from Saskatchewan in 1970.
He taught French at Sydney Academy from 1946-1955, was Regional Representative for Adult Education in Cape Breton 1955-1967, founded Extension Department at Pius XII University in Lesothto 1960-1961, Assistant Director Adult Education for N.S. 1967-1973, Associate Director Coady Institute and Extension Department 1973-1979, Assistant Director Coady Institute 1979-1984.
Member of Canadian delegation to Fifth Commonwealth Education Conference – Canberra, Australia 1971.
He was former president of the NSTU Sydney Local, Past Grand Knight KOC Sydney, President, St. Michael’s Parish Council, Spryfield, tutor for Laubach Literacy, member of Halifax Archdiocesan Social Service Commission, Member of St. Ninian’s Parish Christian Service Committee and Hospitality Ministry.
He served six years as Lay Director for Cursillo, was board member of Braemore Co-op, Bergengren Credit Union, Family Services of Eastern N.S., St. F.X. Alumni Association, Antigonish Town and Country Home Care, VON Antigonish and former CND Associate, Member of Arras Brand No. 59 Royal Canadian Legion.
Joe worked tirelessly for the cause of the Antigonish Movement and adult education.
In recent years he was a volunteer at the RK MacDonald Guest Home and with the St. Martha’s Palliative Care.
Joe loved to golf, play bridge and pool, take photographs, sing and laugh.
His family and his many friends around the world will miss him.
Survived by his wife of 53 years, Audrey (Connor); children, Denise (John) Davies, Los Angeles, André (Mary Jo), Lr. Sackville, Yvonne (Brian) Lynch, Antigonish and John (Debbie), Dartmouth; nine grandchildren.
Predeceased by brother, Michael and sisters, Mary Louise (Sr. Josephine), Amelia (Sr. Jean), Josephine (Sr. Paulin) and Anna (MacPherson).
Visitation today (Thursday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St., Antigonish.
Funeral will be Friday, Dec. 8 at 10 a.m. in St. Ninian’s Cathedral, Antigonish with Rev. Ray Huntley officiating.

Sr. Margaret Claire McAskill
95, Antigonish
Sr. Margaret Claire McAskill, 95, a Sister of St. Martha, Bethany Motherhouse, died on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Bethany.
Born in Glace Bay, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Angus and Margaret (Campbell) McAskill.
Before entrance to the congregation, she received her RN certificate from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing, Glace Bay, N.S., and did one year of public health nursing at McGill University, Montreal, Que.
She served with the VON for five years and spent a year of general duty nursing in New York.
Sr. Margaret Claire entered the Sisters of St. Martha in 1936 and in 1937 continued her service in the nursing field.
She first served as supervisor of obstetrics and then in the surgical unit of St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish, followed by service at the Mercy Hospital, in Sydney, and then administrator of St. Joseph’s Hospital, Glace Bay.
She also worked in the adoption services with Antigonish Diocesan Charities, and later as purchasing agent at St. Rita Hospital, Sydney, N.S.
Before retiring to Bethany in 1980 she served the senior citizens of Antigonish for eight years, helping them to organize and come together socially.
She served as Superior in two of the congregations hospital communities for a period of eleven years.
Sr. Margaret Claire is survived by two blood sisters, Sr. John Bosco, CSM, Antigonish and Kaye, Buena Park, Calif., and an adopted sister, Mary Teresa McMahon, Howie Centre, Cape Breton, N.S.
She was predeceased by one sister, Isabel MacRea and five brothers, Joseph, Hector Vincent, Walter, Peter and John.
The remains are resting at Bethany Motherhouse, where a celebration of vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24.
Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Monday, Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. in Bethany Chapel.
Arrangements are under the direction of C.L. Curry Funeral Services, Antigonish.
