Henrietta (Tat) MacDonald
85, Florence
Henrietta (Tat) MacDonald, 85, of Florence, died peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Bras d’Or, she was the daughter of the late Angus and Maude (Jessome) MacDonald.
She is survived by her sisters, Sadie (Gordon) Cantwell, Bras d’Or, Mae (Johnny) Boutilier, Little Pond; a special sister-in-law, Grace and her children, Douglas, St. Catharine’s, Sharon Stevens, Bridgewater, Barbara Gracie, Millville, Ronald, Vancouver, Peter, Guelph, Yvonne Gracie and Anna MacDonald, Florence, and numerous nieces and nephews and their children.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Douglas and William; and her sister Norma Faulkner.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation by request. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Sept. 29, at 4 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or, Rev. Bedford Doucette officiating. Interment to follow in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Lung Association.

Mary C. Vater
Bellingham
Mrs. Mary C. (Guy) Vater, 95, of 56 Depot St., died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, at the Northbridge Rehabilitation Center.
She was the wife of the late Walter J. Vater.
Born March 18, 1905, in Sydney Mines, N.S., she was the daughter of the late George R. and Mary L. (Hennessey) Guy.
Mrs. Vater is survived by one brother, James Guy, Sydney Mines.
Ludwig Phillip Osmond
92, Florence
Mr. Ludwig Phillip (Lod) Osmond, 92, of 110 Pitt St., Florence, died peacefully at home on Monday, Sept. 18, 2000.
Born at Pillys Island, Nfld., he was the son of the late Alexander and Cecilia (Ryan) Osmond.
Lod was a member of Trinity Anglican Church and worked in several coal mines, including No. 3 in Florence, Toronto Coal Co. and Franklyn Coal Co. In 1957, he went to work as a stevedore at the CN Wharf, North Sydney, then worked as a steward on the Ambrose Shea until his retirement in 1973. He also worked as a bartender at the Florence Fire Hall, and was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Alice (Lawrence) Osmond; five daughters, Edna (Cecil) Hurley, Berenna Waugh, Margaret (Tom) Chisholm, Marlene (Glenn) Carey, all of Florence, Donna (Donald) Gillam, Sydney Mines; six sons, Gordon (Judy), Harold, Fred (Wilma), Lod (Sandra), Bill, Carl (Andrea), all of Florence; 37 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by brothers, Albert (Sadie), Hamilton, Ont., Bill (Marybell), Millville; and sisters, Bess Hott, Ontario, Daisey Costello, Ontario, Minnie MacDougall, Annapolis Valley.
He was predeceased by a son Sam, brothers, Fred and George, sisters, Nellie and Lillian, and grandsons, Wade Hurley, Paul Gillam, Gordon Osmond and Billy Waugh.
Visitation was in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Tuesday, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. in Trinity Anglican Church with Rev. Brenda Drake-MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery, Tobin Road.
Robert Dawson Matthews
38, Florence
Robert Dawson Matthews, 38, of First Avenue, Florence, passed away Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, at home.
Born in North Sydney, he was the eldest son of Robert and Betty (Anderson) Matthews.
He was a member of Wilson United Church, Florence. He was well-known as a caring, loving and giving man who touched the lives of everyone he met.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his son, Robert; daughter, Hilarie, with whom he resided; brother, Norman, Calgary; sisters, Blanche MacLean, Toronto, Colleen (Roy) Symes, Sydney Mines, Lynn Clucas, Oromocto; loving companion, Rosie Jessome, North Sydney and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Robert was predeceased by brother, Brian Louis in infancy, paternal grandparents, Walter and Gladys Matthews and maternal grandparents, Hartley and Margaret Anderson.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held Thursday, at 1 p.m. in Wilson United Church, Florence with Rev. Allen E. Hallett officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of one’s choice.

John Robertson
78, Florence
John Robertson, 78, of Florence, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Florence, he was the son of the late John and Mary (McEwan) Robertson.
He was a former employee of the Cape Breton Development Corp. and enjoyed boating, fishing and hunting in his younger years, he was also a CB radio operator and a member of Wilson United Church, Florence.
He is survived by sisters, Jessie McKinnon, North Sydney, Agnes MacAulay, Big Bras d’Or, Christine Purchase and Janet Fallan, both of Toronto; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Blanche (MacKenzie) Robertson, brothers, William, Thomas and James, sisters, Jean, Marion and Lillian.
There will be visitation for the late Mr. Robertson Friday, Nov. 10 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Clyde Avenue, Sydney Mines. Funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Wilson United Church, Florence with Rev. Allen Hallett officiating. Burial in Brookside Cemetery,

Mary Viola Jessome
Florence
Mary Viola Jessome, formerly of Florence, in her 91st year, beloved wife of the late Patrick A. Jessome, passed away peacefully at the Northside General Hospital, Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, surrounded by her loving and devoted family.
Born in Florence, she was the daughter of the late Luke and Beatrice (Day) Reashore.
Viola was a very active and devote member of St. Stephen’s Parish in Florence, where she was a member of the Catholic Women’s League, St. Anne’s Society, and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion in Florence. She was also involved with the home nursing division of the St. John’s Ambulance; Wm. T. McKeough Chapter, where she acted as secretary treasurer for the Northside.
After her husband died, she moved to the senior’s complex on Maple View Drive, North Sydney, where she became a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish and sang in the choir, was a Eucharistic minister and a lecturer, involving herself with the fall fair. More recently, she attended the day care program at Harbour View Hospital.
She is survived by five daughters, Eileen MacDonald (Bernie), Arthena Matheson (Leo), Bernice Hatcher (Cyril), all of Sydney Mines, Anita Clarke (Orrin), Bras d’Or and Nancy Gauthier (Don), Ontario; four sons, Joseph (Mary) and Reginald, both of Ontario, James (Angela), Christmas Island and Blaine (Paula), Sydney Mines. Also surviving are four sisters, Vivian Williams, North Sydney, Anita Miano, Boston, Patricia Wright, Kirkland Lake, and Genievieve Cardone, Boston; one brother, Cyril Reashore (Mildred), Florence.
She is also survived by 47 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by three daughters, Theresa MacDonald, Beatrice Young and Helen Jessome, two sons, Thomas and Lorne David. Also by a sister, Beatrice and a brother, Russell.
Visitation will be held today (Tuesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral mass Wednesday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, North Sydney, with Fr. Peter Piva officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bras d’Or.
