Leah Dawn Dugas
9, Florence
Miss Leah Dawn Dugas, of 112 Church St., Florence, died peacefully at home on Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, surrounded by her Mommy, Daddy, sister Meagan and families.
Born at North Sydney on Dec. 18, 1990, she was the daughter of Darren and Mary Lee (Forrest) Dugas.
She was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines, and was a Grade 4 student at Florence Elementary School. Leah was the ‘Kids for Cancer’ Princess for Sydney Mines area for two years and was the Children’s Wish Foundation poster child for Nova Scotia.
Besides her parents and sister, Meagan, at home, she is survived by her maternal grandparents, John and Lavina ‘Chubb’ (Bonnar) Forrest, paternal grandmother, Mary (Chisolm) Dugas, paternal great-grandmother, Miriam (Buffett) Dugas, her aunts, Darlene (Al), Cindy (Dennis), Cathy Ann (Paul), Darlene (Sandy), Arlene (Johnny), Brenda (Joey), Karen (Eldon), Melinda, Tracy (Scott), uncles, Shane (Paula), John (Lisa), Tommy (Connie), Kevin (Tracey), a number of nieces and nephews, and special friend, Chris.
She was predeceased by her paternal grandfather, Freeman Dugas, her paternal great-grandfather, Michael Dugas, and her infant uncle, Freeman.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Saturday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church with Rev. Ken MacRae officiating, assisted by Rev. Ian MacLeod. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.
Family flowers by request. Memorial donations may be made to the Children’s Wish Foundation or to a charity of choice.
An Angel to us, she will be a Guardian Angel in heaven.
Winnifred May Stubbert
90, Florence
Winnifred May Stubbert, in her 90th year, passed away peacefully at home, Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001.
She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John MacAulay of Greenhill, Florence.
She resided in Florence all of her life. She was a former member of the Bras d’Or Pensioners Club, the Seniors Daycare Program at the Northside Harbourview Hospital, the St. Anne’s Society, the Co-Op Guild, and the Study Club.
She was an adherent of St. Stephen’s Parish, Florence.
She is survived by sons, Wes (Pearl), Florence, Ross, Bras d’Or, Hector (Corrine), Millville; daughter, Sharon (Vic), Winnipeg; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Roddie; sons, Roddie (Jackie), Raymond (Isabel) and Harry (Jessie); also a daughter in infancy and great-granddaughter, Kelly.
Visitation will take place today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Main St., Sydney Mines. Funeral mass to take place Tuesday, 10 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Church, Pitt St., Florence, Fr. A.D. Campbell officiating. Burial to take place at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bras d’Or.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation or charity of one’s choice.
Harry Burns MacLeod
81, Florence
Harry Burns MacLeod, 81, of 599 Bras d’Or Rd., Florence, passed away suddenly on Sunday, March 4, 2001 at home.
Born in Florence, he was the son of the late John William and Sarah Belle (MacNeil) MacLeod.
He was an adherent of Wilson United Church, Florence, a veteran of the Second World War, having served in Italy with the Army Medical Corps., and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 83, Florence.
He was employed at Florence and Princess collieries until his retirement. During his retirement he was an avid visitor of the local hospitals, guest homes and senior citizen homes, taking a great interest in the lives of the residents. If there was a way he could help anyone, he did, and his sense of humour and his stories, cheered everyone.
He is survived and dearly loved by his only daughter, Sharon, Edmonton, Alta.; sister, Catherine Colburn, Florence; a number of nieces and nephews and his closest nephews, Donald and Glen Colburn.
He was predeceased by his wife, Helen (Cleary), formerly of North Sydney in 1989, by brothers, Donald, Malcolm, Lloyd, Miles, Hughie and John W., who was killed in action in Italy, and a sister, Louvine in infancy.
At the request of Burns, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Friday, March 9, 2001, at 1 p.m. in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Allan Hallett officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
Edward Campbell
87, Florence
Mr. Edward Campbell, 87, of 18 Kempt St., Florence, died Saturday, March 17, 2001 at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born at Florence, he was the son of the late William and Barbara (Stephenson) Campbell.
He was a member of Wilson United Church and a former member of the Florence Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a retired coal miner, having worked in No. 3 and Princess Collieries.
He is survived by two daughters, Barbara (James) MacMullin, Florence, Linda (Joseph) MacCarthy, Sydney Mines; two sons, William (Odille) Pondville, Richmond Co., Thomas (Sylvia), Florence; step-sisters, Effie Bain, Baddeck, Jean MacLean, New Glasgow; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Agnes; son, Lorne; daughter, Catherine; brothers, William and Joseph; step-mother, Jean; step-brother, Urwin; and step-sister, Helen.
Visitation will be Monday (today) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Wilson United Church with Rev. Allan Hallett officiating. Burial to follow in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines. As memorials, donations may be made to Wilson United Church or to any charity.
Edward Campbell
87, Florence
Mr. Edward Campbell, 87, of Florence, who died on Saturday, March 17, 2001, was predeceased by his sister Jennie.
Funeral services for the late Mr. Campbell will be held today (Tuesday) at 2 p.m. in Wilson United Church under the direction of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home.
Elizabeth Mae Pero
101, Florence
Elizabeth Mae Pero, age 101, of Florence, passed away in the Northside General Hospital, on Monday, April 9, 2001.
She was born in Florence, the daughter of the late James and Josephine (Devoe) Walsh.
She is survived by daughters, Mary Cousins, Sydney Mines, Zola (Gregory) MacIntosh, Weston, Ont., Audrey (John D.) MacLeod, Big Bras d’Or, Sheila (Ronald) Lyle, Florence; sons, Langelle (Flo) Pero, Florence, James ‘Butch’ (Patsy) Pero, Alder Point; sister, Margaret MacDonald, Florence.
She is also survived by 36 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and 24 great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Pius in 1978, sons, Michael and Clarence, daughters, Edna Simms and Calleen Chapman, brothers, John Willie, James, George and sisters, Mary White, Edna Cousins and Annie Kempt.
There will be no visitation.
A memorial mass will be held Wednesday, April 18 at 10 a.m. at St. Stephens Church, Florence, Rev. A.D. Campbell officiating. Burial will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bras d’Or.
