Nellena Blanche Fife
94, North Sydney
Nellena Blanche Fife, 94, Northside Community Guest Home, formerly of Lynn Drive, Sydney, passed away at the home on Friday, Sept. 29, 2000.
Born in Victoria Mines, she was a daughter of the late Angus J. and Jessie Ann (MacKinnon) MacDonald.
Nellena was a member of St. James Presbyterian Church and taught school in Big Bras d’Or, Millville, Little Bras d’Or, and Thompson High School, retiring in 1971. She is the last member of her immediate family.
Surviving are her daughter, Marilyn Fife, Toronto; son, Winston, Ottawa; grandchildren, David and Robert; and niece, Beryl MacKay, Sydney.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bert, sisters, Marion, Catherine, Annie Florence and Mary Euphemia and brothers Hugh, John Gordon, John Ernest and Dan Malcolm.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. Interment at St. James Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Boularderie Island.
Joseph David Rahey
83, North Sydney
Joseph David Rahey, 83, well known resident of 101 Pleasant St., North Sydney, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital following a brief illness.
Surviving are daughters, Marlene (Mrs. John Bailey), North Sydney, Patricia (Mrs. Ford Green), Baddeck; son, Robert, at home; sister, Julia (Mrs. James Young), North Sydney; brother, Fred (Irene), Halifax, and grandchildren, Donald, Patrick, Joshua, Stephanie, Julian, Meghan, John David, and James.
He was predeceased by his wife Margaret (Madden) Rahey, a son Donald, brothers, James, George, Louis, and Sid, sisters, Helen, Cecilia, Annie and Queenie.
Visitation was held 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral Mass was held 2 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney with Rev. Gus MacLeod officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Association for Community Living, Haley St., North Sydney or to a charity of one’s choice.
E. Ross MacDonald
65, North Sydney
Edwin Ross MacDonald, 65, a resident of 19 Ingraham St., North Sydney, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at home.
He was born in Sydney and raised in Gabarus. He was the loving son of Edwin and Ada (MacGillivary) MacDonald of North Sydney and formerly of Gabarus.
Ross was employed with Marine Atlantic in North Sydney for 35 years, retiring in 1992. He was a member and elder of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, member and Past Master Royal Albert Masonic Lodge, Past President A.O.T.S. Men’s Club of the Church for seven years, member of Fulton Orange Lodge No. 1754, he was involved with North Sydney Minor Hockey and served as president for two years.
Surviving besides his parents, are his loving wife, Eileen (Collier) MacDonald; three daughters, Cathy (Mrs. Jim Hart), Bras d’Or, Darlene (Mrs. Donnie McAdam), Ottawa and Trina, Florence, N.S.; two sons, Wayne (Patsy), North Sydney and Sidney (Elstone), Point Aconi, N.S.; 11 grandchildren who loved their “Poppy” dearly; two sisters, Sharon (Mrs. Donnie Hawco), Sydney and Janice (Mrs. John MacPherson), Marion Bridge. Also a number of nieces and nephews.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (Tuesday) in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney with Rev. David Luker officiating. Burial to follow at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or the Canadian Cancer Society.
A Masonic service will be held 7 p.m. this evening (Tuesday) in the funeral home.
Frances Lamey
80, North Sydney
Helen Frances Lamey, 80, a resident of Moulton Avenue, North Sydney, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Antigonish, she was a daughter of the late Alexander and Lillian (MacDonald) Beaton. She was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney.
Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Paul Lamey; four sons, Carmen, Mississauga, Ont., Paul (Patricia), Riverview, N.B., Robert (Wilma), Mississauga, Ont., and Lloyd (Lois), New Haven, Vict. Co.; a daughter, Eileen, at home; two sisters, Eileen Beaton and Mona Beaton, both of Halifax. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren.
Frances was predeceased by a son, Byron Lamey; a brother, Ernest Beaton; and a sister, Rita MacLean.
A private family visitation will be held in W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, North Sydney. Funeral mass to take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Marie E. Yetman
68, North Sydney
Marie Elizabeth Yetman, 68, a resident of 28 May St., North Sydney, and formerly of Mapleview Drive, North Sydney, passed away Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in North Sydney, she was a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Robinson) Bona. She was a member of St. Joseph Church and a former member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church. She was involved with Home and School Association and active with church fall fairs in her earlier years.
Surviving are five daughters, Heather (Mrs. Tom Patterson), Sydney, Geraldine (Mrs. Billy Hollohan), Sydney, Lorna (Mrs. Gary Romeo), Sydney Mines, Lynn Yetman (Lennie Ivey), Sydney Mines, and Sheliah Yetman (Billie MacLeod), North Sydney; a son, Jamie (Colette), Big Bras d’Or; and her former husband, Gerald Yetman, Little Narrows. Also surviving are her sister, Josephine Bradbury, North Sydney; a brother, George Bona, North Sydney; and eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Ryan, Catherine, Timothy, Jessica, Mark, Brendan, and Matthew.
Marie was predeceased by five brothers, William, Victor, Joseph, Arthur, and Donald; three sisters, Eva, Helen Jardine and Madeline MacDonald.
Visitation was held 7-9 p.m. Saturday and 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Sunday in W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will take place at 10 a.m. today in St. Joseph’s Church with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.

Claretta L. Matthews
68, North Sydney
Claretta L. Matthews, 68, a resident of Wilkie Avenue, North Sydney, passed away Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, at the QE II Health Sciences Centre, Halifax.
Born in Grand Burit, Nfld., she was the daughter of Cecil M. Billard of Miners Memorial Manor in Sydney Mines and the late Dora K. (Billard) Billard.
She was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney. She was Past Worthy Mistress of the LOBA and LTBA and was a member of the Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia.
Besides her father, she is survived by her husband, Gordon; daughters, Lydia Matthews and Linda Matthews, both of North Sydney, and Dora Roach, New Waterford; three grandchildren, Jonathan, Amanda and Gregory and a brother, Ronald (Gen) Billard, Sudbury, Ont.
She was predeceased by her sister, Shirley and brothers, Roy and Willis.
Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday from St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Archdeacon Reg MacDonald officiating. Burial to follow in Lakeside Cemetery.
