Stanley M. Jackson
85, North Sydney
Stanley Miles Jackson, 85, a resident of Harbourview Hospital Veterans Wing and formerly of Margaret Street, North Sydney, died Monday Jan. 15, 2001, at the hospital.
Born in North Sydney, he was a son of the late William and Martha (Miles) Jackson.
He was employed for over 30 years with Stephens Building Supplies, Sydney. He was a veteran of the Second World War serving overseas with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders of the Canadian Army. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 19 North Sydney and Branch 12 Sydney. He was a member of the Sydney Steel Pensioners Club, Club 55 Sydney, Seniors Bowling league, St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, and he enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling and harness racing.
Surviving are three daughters, Genevieve (Mrs. Ron Billard), Sudbury, Ont., Beverly (Mrs. Henry Launay), Westmount, and Jane (Mrs. Bill Wilson), Sydney Mines; two sons, Walter (Arlene), Chilliwack, B.C. and George (Claudette), Richmond B.C.; two brothers, Fred Jackson, St. Catharines, Ont., and Reginald (Mary) Jackson, Langley B.C. Also surviving is sister-in-law, Nina (Doug) Mauger, North Sydney; 14 grandchildren and 23 great- grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Clara Reid and his second wife, Gladys Richardson, a daughter, Judy Jackson, grandson, David Billard, granddaughter, Mary Helen, two brothers, Walter and Chesley.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service will be held Thursday 2 p.m. from St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Archdeacon Reg MacDonald officiating. Burial in Lakeside Cemetery.

Celina Ann MacLean
89, North Sydney
Celina Ann MacLean, 89, a resident of the Northside Guest Home, passed away at the guest home on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001.
Born in North Sydney, she was a daughter of the late John Thomas and Jane (Long) Dunphy.
Celina was formerly a resident of Sydney River and Royal Court, Sydney.
She was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, an active member of the SPCA and a former member of Club 55.
Surviving are her brother, Earl, Amherst, N.S.; two nieces, Joan (Roy) Shepherd, North Sydney, and Clare Reno, Sydney; two nephews, Earl (Sandra) Reno, and Wayne (Phyllis) Reno, both of North Sydney.
Celina was predeceased by her husband, Archibald, in 1977, a sister, Kathleen Reno and brothers, Harold and Roland.
Visitation will be at Sydney Memorial Chapel, today (Tuesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Bethel Presbyterian Church, Wednesday 10:30 a.m., Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Cecil Martin Billard
98, North Sydney
Cecil Martin Billard, 98, a resident of Miners Memorial Manor, Sydney Mines, and formerly of 33 Wilkie Ave., North Sydney, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Grand Bruit, Nfld., he was a son of the late Samuel and Elizabeth (Melbourne) Billard.
He worked many years of his life as a fisherman and later as a stevedore with CN Marine, North Sydney, until his retirement. He was a member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, of the North Sydney Senior Citizens and Pensioners Club and he enjoyed carpentry very much.
Surviving are son, Ron (Genevieve), Sudbury, Ont.; two sons-in-law, Gordon Matthews, North Sydney, with whom he resided for many years and Harold Keeping, North Sydney; two daughters-in-law, Joan Billard, Halifax, and Marjorie Billard, Springdale, Nfld.; 18 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Billard was predeceased by his wife, Dora Billard; two daughters, Claretta Matthews and Shirley Keeping; two sons, Willis Billard and Roy Billard; a grandson, David Billard; three brothers, Archibald, James and Wesley; and his sister, Rebecca.
Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today (Monday) in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service Tuesday 11 a.m. from the funeral home chapel with Rev. David Luker officiating. Burial to take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.

Mary Elizabeth Clarke
61, North Sydney
Mary Elizabeth Clarke, 61, a resident of 139 Peppett St., North Sydney, died suddenly Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Simon and Veronica (Whitty) Jessome.
She was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney.
Surviving is her husband, Francis A. ‘Bud’ Clarke; two daughters, Elaine (Fabian) Frye, North Sydney, Tanya Bennett (Mitch Cormier), Winnipeg; four sons, Terry, Ingonish, Harry, David (Judith), and Craig (Rhonda), all of North Sydney; grandchildren, Alicia, Clarke, Christa, Robyn, Cara, Erica, Floyd, Caelin, Megan, Michael, Megan and Alicia; great-granddaughter, Gabriella.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Elizabeth Anne and a brother, Simon Jr.

Catherine Isabel MacEachern
93, North Sydney
Catherine Isabel MacEachen, 93, formerly of Center Street and Peppett Street, North Sydney, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at the Northside Community Guest Home, North Sydney.
Born in North Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Hugh E. and Catherine (MacNeil) MacEachen.
Catherine lived a very good and full life. She worked as a housekeeper for several parish priests in her home parish of St. Joseph’s in North Sydney, and later moved to the United States, where she worked for 40 years before returning home.
She is survived by her nephew, Roy MacEachen, with whom she resided until 1997 and a number of other nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Mary and Sadie, six brothers, Dan, Allen, Michael, Neil, John and Archie.
There will be no visitation by request. A memorial mass will be held Thursday 10 a.m. from St. Joseph, North Sydney, with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Interment will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the St. Joseph’s Church Improvement Fund.
Hugh M. Murphy
73, North Sydney
It is with deep sadness that we must announce the death of our beloved, Hugh MacKinnon Murphy.
A resident of Parkview Place, North Sydney, Hughie passed away peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by the love of his family and friends.
Born in Bras d’Or on June 16, 1927, he was the son of the late Angus Murphy and Edna (Grantmeyer) Murphy Matheson.
He had been employed by CN Marine in North Sydney up until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of the Bras d’Or Senior Citizens and Pensioners Club, and during the 1970s, was an active member of the Northern Yacht Club in North Sydney having served as a member of the executive.
Hughie was a faithful servant of his church and was a member of both St. Joseph Parish in North Sydney as well as Holy Rosary Parish in Westmount.
He is survived by his best friend and beloved wife of 40 years, Ada (Stamper) Murphy; daughter, Cathy (Lowell) Geddes, New Brunswick; two sons, Jim (Nancy), North Sydney, and Tom (Leslie), Westmount; granddaughter, Angie, North Sydney; sister, Edna Thompson, New Brunswick.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Wayson, Jack, Melvin and James, a sister, Catherine in infancy.
There will be visitation and friends will be received on Friday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be held to celebrate Hughie’s life 10 a.m. Saturday from St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Tom MacNeil and Rev. Dan MacInnis officiating. Burial to take place at a later date in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Hughie was a true friend and a devoted husband and father. His presence, kindness, and laughter will be missed by those who knew him. He will always be fondly remembered.
