Charles Aloysius Pentecost
75, Westmount
Charles Aloysius Pentecost, 75, of 98 Pentecost Dr., Westmount, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Westmount, he was a son of the late David and Helen (Lamont) Pentecost. He was a member of Holy Rosary Parish, Westmount.
He is survived by his sister, Mary Pentecost, Saint John, N.B.; two brothers, Bill and Wilfred, both of Westmount.
He was predeceased by a sister, Judy and four brothers, Arthur, Jim, Duncan and Francis.
Visitation for the late Mr. Pentecost will be held Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, main level. Funeral mass will be held Friday at 9 a.m. in Holy Rosary Church with Rev. Dan MacInnis officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery, Westmount.

William Gordon Smith
82, Westmount
William Gordon Smith, 82, of Westmount, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Friday, Sept. 22, 2000.
Born in Birch Grove, he was the son of the late William J. and Margaret Smith.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Sara (Ferguson); son, William Norman (Diane), Sydney River; grandchildren, Matthew, Krista and Geoffrey, all of Sydney River; sisters, Katherine Evans, Sydney, and Vivian (Albert) Golding, Williamsburg, Va.
Besides his parents, Mr. Smith was predeceased by two brothers in infancy, and a sister, Irene Shewchuck.
A veteran of the Second World War, he served overseas with the Canadian Army from 1942 until 1946. After his military service, Mr. Smith attended Dalhousie University and graduated from the universities of Toronto and Saskatchewan, after which he had a long and distinguished career in the health care field in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. A member of Branch 12 Legion, he was also active in the United Church, Sydney River.
Visitation for the late Mr. Smith will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Saturday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in Sydney River United Church, Sunday 3 p.m. with Rev. A. McIntosh officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Donations may be made to the VON or the United Protestant Church, Sydney River.
W. Earl Burns
72, Westmount
Willard Earl Burns, 72, Keats Drive, Westmount, passed away peacefully, at home in the presence of his loving family, following a courageous battle with cancer, on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late George William and Gertrude Florence (Fraser) Burns.
Earl was a graduate of Sydney Academy. He worked for many years in local industry, including Canadian Liquid Air, at the Sydney Steel Corp., Deuterium of Canada, at the Heavy Water Plant, as control operator, and until his retirement in 1990, he worked as the oxygen plant manager, at the Sydney Steel Corp.
He was an avid gardener, who loved to spend time in his garden, which was its most beautiful this year. A lover of life and laughter, Earl was known and loved by all for his whit, charm and storytelling.
He was a founding and life long member of Westmount United Church.
Earl is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Thelma (Gregor); daughter, Beth (David) MacLennan, Sydney River, grandsons, Jeff, Australia, Matthew, Halifax, and Andrew, at home, daughter Janet and granddaughter, Mary Beth Byrne, Coxheath; daughter, Brenda (Randy) MacDonald, Sydney River and grandsons, Kyle and Brett; daughter, Helen (Dan) Townsend, Kingston, Ont., and grandsons, Alex and Wesley; only son, George (Lynn Christian), grandson, Gregory and granddaughter, Laura, Moncton. Also surviving are brothers, Rev. Russell (Margie) Burns, Charlottetown and Robert Burns, Westmount; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Affectionately known as Pappa, Earl was a friend to all and leaves behind many neighbours and long time friends, near and far.
He was predeceased by brothers, Wesley and Ralph, a sister in infancy, and a granddaughter, Baby Angie Byrne.
A memorial service will be held at Westmount United Church, Saturday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Bernice Spracklin officiating, assisted by Rev. Thomas Whent. Reception to be held in the church hall immediately following the service. Interment at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date.

Marjorie Walker
86, Westmount
Marjorie Walker, a longtime resident of Westmount, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Marjorie, 86 years old, was born in Charlottetown, P.E.I. and was the only daughter of the late Holden B. and Henrikka Louise (Babe) Auld of Sydney.
She is survived by two daughters, Carol (Edward) Penny, Sydney, Sharon (Murray) Adams, Westmount and one son, Kevin (Cathy) Walker, with whom she resided.
She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Glenn and Kimberley Adams, Chantelle Walker and Jennifer Penny. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Auld, Coxheath and Janet Walker, Marion Bridge.
Marjorie was predeceased by her husband, Augustus (Gussie) Walker and her brother, H.B. (Bud) Auld.
Visitation will be held at the Sydney Memorial Chapel, Thursday, Oct. 12 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral will take place at St. Aidan’s Church, Sunnydale Drive, Westmount, Friday, Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Harold Brown officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Aidan’s Church or a charity of one’s choice.
Viola Susan Redmond
90, Westmount
Viola Redmond, 90, of 27 Martell St., Westmount, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000.
Born in Point Tupper, she was a daughter of the late Jeremiah and Josephine (Tobin) Murray.
Viola was a long-time resident of Westmount, member of Holy Rosary Parish and was granted life membership in Holy Rosary CWL.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Robert, in 1976, five sisters, Beryl, Helen, Golda, Eileen, Vivian, three brothers, Earl, Bert, Bobby and a close personal friend, Harry Mitchell.
Viola is survived by three daughters, Beryl (Stuart) Sutherland, Westmount, Dorothy (Norman Murnaghan), Halifax, Josephine (Wayne) MacDonald, Westmount, and one son, Jerry (Brenda), Coxheath; two sisters, Iris Murphy (Sydney) and Della Denley (Ottawa); nine grandchildren, Cary, Kimmie, Steven, Susie, Jodi, Jason, Shauna, Sheryl and Aaron; one great-grandchild, Cameron.
Visitation will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, today (Friday), 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Rosary Parish, Westmount, with Fr. Dan MacInnis officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Donations may be made to the Cove Guest Home Foundation, Heart and Stroke Foundation, or charity of choice.
Elizabeth (Betty) Ratchford
52, Westmount
Mrs. Elizabeth (Betty) Ratchford, 52, of 50 Ingraham’s Lane, Westmount, and formerly of Sydney Mines, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Florence, she was the daughter of the late James and Julia Munroe.
She was a member of St. Theresa’s Parish, Sydney.
She is survived by her husband, Richard; daughters, Debbie (Mrs. Robbie Blinkhorne), Nona (Mrs. Blair Forrest), Julie (Mrs. Chris Walker), all of Sydney Mines; sisters, Colleen (Mrs. Paul LeBlanc), Irene (Mrs. Gord Crews), both of Ontario, Emma (Mrs. Peter MacLean), Point Aconi; brother, Billy (Yvonne), Mill Creek; sister-in-law, Kathleen Munroe, Ontario; and grandchildren, Kimberly, Trevor and Travis.
She was predeceased by brothers, Wesly and Lorne; and her sister, June Davidson.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Sydney Mines, today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 2 p.m. in St. Theresa’s Church, Sydney, with Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
