Evan Chester Hines
70, Westmount
Evan Chester Hines, 70, Murphy Road, Westmount, passed away at home on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of Chester Hines and the late Mary (Marmo) Hines.
He worked as a mechanic for Lipton's Auto Parts for 30 years and Northside Auto for 15 years, retiring in 1980.
Besides his father, Evan is survived by his son, Wayne, Sydney; sisters, Shirley (Basil) Smith, East Bay, and Carol Greenwood, Truro; brothers, Harold ‘Sonny’, Robert ‘Bobby’, and Stewart, all of Sydney, and Desmond, Toronto; grandchildren, Shannon and Christopher and a close friend, Richard Waldron.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service, under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel, will be held at Sydney River United Church, Wednesday 2 p.m., with Rev. Alan McIntosh officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Lung Association.
Ernest Francis MacLeod
76, Westmount
Ernest Francis MacLeod, 76, of Monteith Avenue, Westmount, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at his home.
Born in Sydney Mines and at an early age moved to Cape Dauphin, he was a son of the late Kenneth and Catherine (MacLennan) MacLeod.
He retired in 1984 from Reeves Modular Homes as a construction manager after 23 years service. He was a member, elder, choir member, and served on the Board of Stewards and treasurer of Good Samaritan Fund of Westmount United Church. He was also a member of the Canadian Order of Forresters and honourary member of Westmount Volunteer Fire Department.
Ernie is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Josephine; a son, Brent (Rose), Westmount; two gracious grandchildren, Amanda and “his little buddy” Shea.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Louise and Olive, three brothers, Fraser; Roddie and Donald.
Visitation will be held in Westmount United Church Thursday from 7-9 p.m. Friday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service in the church 2 p.m. Saturday with Rev. Bernice Spracklin officiating. Interment in St. James Cemetery, Bras d’Or.
Family flowers only. Memorials may be made to Westmount United Church Memorial Fund/Special Projects Fund.

Valerie Ann (Pettipas) O'Handley
Westmount
Valerie O’Handley, 50, of Westmount, formerly of Spring Street, Sydney, passed away Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney, she was the daughter of Mr. Joe Pettipas, Spring Street, Sydney, and the late Ann (Morrison) Pettipas.
She was a member of Holy Rosary Church, Westmount.
Surviving are husband, Roy O’Handley, Westmount; daughter, Michelle, at home; son, Sean (Natasha), Calgary; brother, Allan Pettipas, Sydney; and granddaughter, Bailey, Calgary.
The late Mrs. O’Handley will have visitation Tuesday, Dec. 19, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney. Funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Rosary Church, Westmount, Fr. Dan MacInnis officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, Kidney Foundation of Canada or to a charity of one’s choice.
Isabelle Catherine Andrews
87, Westmount
Isabelle Catherine Andrews, 87, of Westmount, passed away Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Angus and Ella (MacDonald) MacVicar. She was at one time employed at Bennette’s Grocery store. She was a member of St. Aidan’s Church, president of ACW Guild for 35 years, past organist for 11 years, Sunday school teacher, and she was currently memorial and flower fund treasurer.
Isabelle is survived by a son, James (Sylvia), Dartmouth; daughter, Ella, at home; sister, Hattie (Louis) Spagnolatti, Sydney; brother, Rev. Edward (Bess) MacVicar, Riverview N.B.; special niece, Rev. Diane MacVicar; and two grandchildren, Blair and Derrick. Leaving also her extended family, including Grace and Sheldon Jones and girls, Frank and Elaine Young, Mary O’Callaghan and her very dear friend Mary MacMillan.
She was predeceased by husband, lrvine; son, Garfield, in infancy; sister, Rhea; and two brothers, Angus and George.
Visitation will be held today (Tuesday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Aidan’s Church with Rev. Harold Brown officiating. Burial will take place at a later date at Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Donations may be made to St. Aidan’s Church or charity of choice.
James Henry Miller
70, Westmount
James Henry Miller, 70, of Myrtle Street, Westmount, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Friday, Jan. 5, 2001.
Born in Sydney, James was a son of the late James Edward and Hannah Jane (Coleman) Miller.
In the early 50s, James was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, for three years. He was a bricklayer at Sydney Steel for 43 years and was a member of the Bricklayers and Allied Trades, receiving his 50-year pin and served on the executive.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Ann (MacNeil); daughter, Sharon (David) Risk, Sydney; sons, Victor, Halifax, and Glenn, Sydney; sisters, Margaret (John) Bruno and Helen Mombourquette, Sydney; brother, Donald, Sydney and a beloved grandson, Richard James Risk.
James was predeceased by his brother, Victor.
There will be no visitation. A private memorial mass will be held at Holy Rosary Church, Westmount, with Rev. Dan MacInnis officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.
