Veronica C. Dowell
91, Dartmouth
Veronica C. Dowell, 91 a resident of Breton Bay Nursing Home, formerly of Dartmouth, passed away at the nursing home, Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was a daughter of the late Edward (Eddie Pop) and Elizabeth MacDonald.
Beloved wife of the late Henry J. Dowell; loving mother of Eileen Mosher of White Bear, Sask. and Harry and his wife, Linda Dowell of Sydney; grandmother of Krista Dowell and Craig Dowell, both of Eastern Passage, N.S. and Jason Dowell of Enfield; great-grandmother of Daylen White; dear sister of David and Ralph, Toronto, Leonard of Caledonia, Nova Scotia, Terry and Eileen, both of London, Ont.
Predeceased by her brothers, Charles and Aubrey and by sisters, Edna, Alberta, Theresa and Frances.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 30 at 2 p.m. at Alderney Manor, 3rd floor recreation room, 1 Alderney Drive, Dartmouth, N.S.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of ones choice.
Giselle Ann (nee Sampson) Wall
46, Dartmouth
Giselle Ann (Sampson) Wall, 46, residing in Dartmouth and formerly from Sydney, N.S., passed away suddenly Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, after a lengthy battle with scleroderma.
Loving daughter, sister, mother and friend, she was the daughter of the late Vincent Joseph Sampson.
She is survived by a daughter, Alicia Wall; son, Brian Wall; mother, Edith Sampson; sisters, Leta Thomas, Darlene Griffith; brothers, Ivan Sampson, Larry Snow and Wayne Sampson.
She will be fondly remembered for her strength and courage, as well as her loving nature and goodwill.
The family would like to thank the staff at Scotiabank and Zellers, and Great West Life Assurance Company, the City Courts of Sydney, N.S., the nurses at Dartmouth General and all others for their donations and support.
Visitation will take place Sunday, Feb. 11 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12 in Pope John Paul XXIII, Colby Village. Burial to follow in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Lung Association or the Scleroderma Society.
Mary (Gillis) Lushington

The death of Mary Lushington, formerly of Sydney, occurred Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, after a lengthy illness.
She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Leo B. Gillis, Johnstone Street, Sydney.
She is survived by her husband, Peter Lushington, Dartmouth, N.S.; three sons, Brian (Debbie), Lantz, N.S., Barry (Millie), Inverness, Florida, U.S.A., Tim (Paula), Amherst, N.S.; four grandchildren; one sister, Eileen (Buddy) Keating and cousin, Gwen Oulton, Sydney.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Janet (Richard) Papp, Manchester, N.H.
Body is resting at Mattalls Funeral Home, Portland Street, Dartmouth, today (Friday) Dec. 15, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Peter’s Church, Dartmouth. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Douglas Dennison Peacocke
76, Dartmouth
Lcdr. (P), Douglas Dennison ‘Doug’, Peacock, RCN, retired, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family after a brief but valiant struggle with cancer, on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at the age of 76.
Doug is survived by his loving wife and best friend Marie White Lynch. Treasured dad of Judy Adelberg (Peter), Ottawa, Dr. Larry (Dr. Joan), Moncton, Dr. Sandy, Ottawa, Jacqueline MacDonald (Ian) and Jennifer Dort (Paul), Dartmouth, Cpl. Ray (Cathy), Red Deer, Alta., Ken (Debbie), London, Ont. and Jeannette (Cst. Kevin), Castor, Alta. Dearest brother of Audrey Carleton (Alton Higgins), High River, Alta., and Thomas Peacocke (Judy), Edmonton.
Predeceased by son Cmdr. Jerry Peacocke (Barbara) and wives Helen MacDonald and Jean Mossman McDonald.
Fond uncle/step-dad of John McDonald (Shaaron), Toronto and Margo McDonald Bassarab (Rob), Valleyview, Alta. and devoted step-dad of Laura Lynch Ullyot (Kevin), Calgary and Mona Lynch, Halifax. Special uncle to Ross MacMillan, Halifax and dear brother-in-law of Florence McDonald Fitzgerald. Loving grandad to 23 grandchildren.
Son of the late Thomas W. Peacocke and the late Henrietta Munro, Doug was raised in Barons, Alta. He then served in the RCAF 1942-45, as a flying instructor, transferring to the RN Fleet Air Arm in 1945, then to the newly-created RCN Fleet Air Arm the same year. He saw service in all three of Canada’s aircraft carriers, namely: Warrior, Magnificent, and Bonaventure as well as Shearwater base in various capacities, including as Commanding Officer of 825 Squadron and 03/870 Sea Fury Squadron. Doug also served three years with the U.S. Navy in its ASW Air Development Squadron VX-1 at Key West, Florida. Retiring from the Navy in 1968, he joined the Medical Society of Nova Scotia as Executive Director. On the occasion of retirment from the Medical Society in 1989, Doug received the incredible distinction of becoming the first lay person to be named as Honourary Member of the N.S. Medical Society, the oldest medical association in Canada. This was in recognition of his ‘signal service’ to the Society in successfully meeting all the challenges of a rapidly growing membership and the demands for new and more services. Doug is also well known for his active interest and support in preserving the history of Canadian Naval Aviation which, brief as it was, that period will remain the highlight of the history of the RCN. His favourite quote: “Carrier flying - always exciting, often terrifying. The memories of it and the friendships I made will be with me ‘til the end of my days’ ”.
There will be visitation from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen St., Dartmouth. Mass in celebration of Doug’s life will take place 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Clement’s Roman Catholic Church, 16 Gaston Road, Dartmouth.

Minnie Louise White
92, Dartmouth
Minnie Louise White, 92, formerly of Irving Street, Woodside, Dartmouth, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, in Dartmouth General Hospital.
Born Sept. 4, 1908 in Hong Kong, China, she was a daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Langille) Scudder.
She lived in Dartmouth most of her life and most recently she was a resident of Ocean View Manor, where she enjoyed singing in the choir, playing cards and other activities. She was a life member of the Mayflower Hand Quilters Guild and quilted with the Woodside Imperoyal Quilters and Nimble Fingers at Ocean View.
She was an avid lawn bowler with the Dartmouth Lawnbowlers Association and indoor bowling with the Dartmouth Seniors. She was president of the Woodside Seniors Club for many years. She was a member of the ladies auxiliary of Immaculate Conception Church and was awarded the Archdiocesan Medal of Merit in recognition of her work with the parish community.
She is survived by daughters, Carol (Gerald) Marshall, Diane (David) Edgar, Louise (David) Conrod, all of Dartmouth; son, Jack (Ruth) White, Bras d’Or; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, John (Jack), daughter, Connie, sister, Mae, brothers, Joseph, Clyde, Alfred and Sidney.
Visiting 7-9 p.m. today (Saturday) and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen St. Funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday in Immaculate Conception Church, Pleasant Street. Burial to follow in Mount Hermon Cemetery.

Richard (Richie) Pearson
72, Dartmouth / New Waterford
Richard (Richie) Pearson, 72, of 47 Duncraggan Dr., Dartmouth, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at the Dartmouth General Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Thomas Edgar and Sarah Elizabeth (Band) Pearson.
Richie was a former resident of Wood Avenue, New Waterford. He was a member of All Saints Anglican Church, New Waterford, and he held such positions in the church as warden, treasurer and president of the AYPA. In his youth he worked as a meat cutter in New Waterford. He was later employed with CN as a freight agent in New Waterford and as a ticket agent in Sydney.
Richie was a former member of the Kinsmen, New Waterford Rotary Club and at one time he was an ambulance attendant for over 10 years with McGillivray’s Ambulance. He was a former scout leader in New Waterford.
Rich had several hobbies which included stamp collecting, coin collecting, photography, avid reader, bird watching and he loved singing and listening to classical music.
He is survived by his companion, Betty Rudderham; three sisters, Ethel (Nelson) MacLean, Glace Bay, Marion Oliver, New Waterford, and Betty Dean, Albert Bridge; one brother, James (Odile) Pearson, New Waterford and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife in 1990, Edwina (Din) Lewis, brothers, Charles, Sid, Thomas and Robert in infancy and one nephew.
Visitation will take place at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, today (Wednesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at All Saints Anglican Church with Rev. Doug Chard officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in St. John’s Anglican Cemetery, Point Edward.

Helen Rose MacIntyre
Dartmouth
Helen Rose (Chiasson) MacIntyre, of Dartmouth, formerly of 31 Rotary Dr., Sydney, passed away peacefully at her home in Dartmouth, Thursday morning, March 15, 2001.
Born in Grand Etang, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Suzanne Chiasson. A beloved mother and grandmother, her life was a study in kindness and sacrifice.
She spent most of her life caring for her children but prior to her marriage she taught school in Larry’s River, Guysborough County. Helen was a well-known seamstress and worked at Jacobson’s for many years.
She is survived by five daughters, Alice Kieley (Adrian), Marion Bridge, Anne Penny, Dartmouth, Suzan Richardson (Gerald), Dartmouth, Beatrice MacDonald (David), Truro, and Mary Ellen MacIntyre (Keir), Halifax; three sons, John (Eileen), Sydney, Alphonse (Pat), Halifax, and Richard (Colleen), Alberta; one sister, Sr. Catherine (F.J.), New Brunswick; two brothers, Alphonse, Sydney, Tom Charles, N.B.; 19 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by sons, Danny, Arthur, infant son, Francis, infant daughter, Maureen Rose, brothers, Joseph, Moise, Andrew, sisters, Albine, Maryann and her husband, Joseph in 1974.
The late Mrs. MacIntyre will have visitation today (Friday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Saturday, 9-11 a.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel (main level). Funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church on Saturday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.

Irene Margaret MacLeod
73, Dartmouth / New Waterford
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Irene Margaret MacLeod. Irene was born in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, to James and Louise (Gillis) MacKinnon in 1930. Irene married Major Ralph MacLeod (Canadian Military) of Sydney, Nova Scotia, in the early 70s and they both retired in 1985. Irene’s life was changed dramatically in 1997 when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer disease and again in November 1999 when her husband Ralph was tragically killed in a car/bicycle accident near their winter home in Homestead, Florida. Irene is survived by her brother, Lawrence MacKinnon and wife Sheila of Ottawa; stepsons, Brian MacLeod and wife Dianne of Halifax and Grant MacLeod (Connie) of London, Ontario; nephews, James MacKinnon (Jennifer) of Calgary and Brian and Robert MacKinnon (Vicki) of Ottawa. Grand aunt to Amy, Daniel and Hayley MacKinnon, many cousins; step-cousins and other relatives. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her mother, Louise MacKinnon, who died in 1941, when Irene was 11 years old, her father, James MacKinnon, a retired coal miner, in 1973, and stepmother, Cecilia MacKinnon in 1968. Irene was a gentle, bright soul who loved people and enjoyed many friendships. She had a rare gift of always being cheerful and positive about all aspects of life and she loved sharing her enthusiasm with everyone she met. She was an active member of Saint Peter’s Catholic parish in Dartmouth for many years. She was also active with St. Vincent de Paul Society and a volunteer at the Dartmouth General Hospital. Irene was truly a special person and an inspiration to all who knew her. She leaves behind many memories of decency and goodness that will never be forgotten. Two religious services will be held; one in Dartmouth, N.S. and one in New Waterford, N.S. Cremation has taken place at Irene’s request by Dartmouth Funeral Home Ltd. A memorial mass will be held at St. Peter’s Church, Dartmouth, N.S. Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 12 noon, with a reception at the parish hall following the mass. The funeral mass and interment will take place in New Waterford, N.S. at Saint Agnes Church. Visitation will be in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Thursday, Oct. 16 from 7-9 p.m. Mass will be in St. Agnes Church, Friday, Oct. 17 at 11 a.m. Reception at the Carmel Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society or a charity of choice.
