Genevieve (Jennie) McIntosh
Dartmouth / Glace Bay
Genevieve (Jennie) McIntosh of Dartmouth and Glace Bay, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at Oakwood Terrace, Dartmouth, in her 90th year.
Born in Austria, Jennie immigrated to Canada with her family at the age of four years. She was the daughter of the late Max and Maria (Grani) Ragger of New Waterford.
Jennie married John McIntosh in 1930 and was widowed in 1970. She was a former member of Holy Family Church, Glace Bay, and a former resident of MacKay’s Corner, Glace Bay.
Jennie was well loved for her giving nature, true love of people, sense of humour and fighting spirit. Nothing pleased her more than to get a chuckle out of people when telling stories about the past, coal mining, farming and families.
Her grandchildren would say, “Grandma would never let us win at cribbage.”
Mother of John and his wife Kathleen, Dartmouth, Reginald and his wife Bernice, Glace Bay, Joan Morgan, Halifax, Charlotte and her husband George, Connecticut, U.S.A., Rosemarie and her husband Joe, Waterloo, Ont. Grandmother of Anita Louise, George, Phillip, Lynn Christa, Karen, Lisa Lynn, Carol, Brian Joseph, Heather, Brian John; also great-grandmother to five children. Sister to Rose McIntyre, Grimsby, Ont., Agnes Warner, Glace Bay and her brother, Max Ragger.
Predeceased by sister, Margaret Miller, Glace Bay.
Jennie will be fondly remembered by her best friend and sister-in-law, Frances Crosby, Glace Bay and friend, Annie McAulay, Glace Bay.
Relatives and friends will be received at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, today (Saturday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Holy Family Church, Glace Bay, Fr. Francis Cameron officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Society would be appreciated or the St. Joseph’s Cemetery Fund in honour of Jennie.
Elaine M. (Kerr) Prier
72, Dartmouth
Elaine M. (Kerr) Prier, 72, of Dartmouth, passed away Sept. 16, 2000, at home with her loving family present. She fought her illness with dignity and courage. Born in Louisbourg, N.S., she was the daughter of Murdock and Anna (Morrison) Kerr, of Sydney.
She was an accomplished painter in both oils and watercolours and studied under many well-known Maritime artists. She taught painting for 15 years and all her students enjoyed the fellowship as well as the excellent instruction. She was a member of Painter’s Palette for the past 10 years, where her paintings have been on public display. She was also an accomplished china painter and completed many artistic items which she shared with friends and family. She loved to decorate and her artistic ability is reflected in her home and she has shared this talent with many friends.
She gave generously of her time to many volunteer organizations including working with the East Dartmouth Christian Food Bank run from Woodlawn United Church for five years. She never hesitated to volunteer her time to many charitable organizations in the collection of funds. She was a past-president of the Dartmouth Kiwanis Ladies Auxiliary. She loved people and made friends easily with her warmth and kindness. She never thought of herself but continuously was concerned about others.
Her many friends will remember her compassion, her strength, her generosity and her many acts of kindness. She was a great lady and will be missed but not forgotten.
She is survived by her husband, Robert; daughter, Anne (Greg Layther), London, England; son, Robert, of Halifax, N.S.; brothers, Kenneth and Donald Kerr, of Sydney, and Bruce Kerr, of Ottawa, Ont.; sisters, Shirley MacNeil, of Sydney and Heather (Ross Inkpen), of Picton, Ont.; and two beloved grandchildren, Richard and Imogen, of London, England.
Cremation has taken place. No visitation. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sept. 19, 2000, in Woodlawn United Church, 54 Woodlawn Road, Dartmouth, N.S., with Mrs. Dianne Hill officiating assisted by Rev. Gordon Murray. A private family burial in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens will be held at a later date.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the Palliative Care Program, QE II Foundation, or the Nova Scotia Rehabitation Centre, Halifax, N.S., or a charity of choice.
Ronald Arthur Moores
66, Dartmouth
Ronald Arthur Moores, 66, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, in the Dartmouth General Hospital.
Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Ronald and Grace (Nicholson) Moores.
Ronald lived most of his life in Westmount, Cape Breton. He was a member of Westmount United Church.
He is survived by three daughters, Sherrie (Mark) Poirier, Lake Echo, Dartmouth, Rhonda (Gary) Latimer, Hay River, N.W.T., and Sandra (Shawn) Sanson, Westmount and grandchildren, Jodie, Derrick, Ashley, Shane, Justin, April, Sabrina and Nichole.
Ronald is also survived by one great-grandson, Dustin and a sister, Margie (Stan) MacPherson, New Brunswick.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Shirley (Foley) Moores and a daughter, Linda Carol in infancy.
Visitation will be held Thursday, 7-9 p.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel with the funeral service to be held Friday in the funeral home chapel.
Angus Winston Cantwell
53, Dartmouth
Angus Winston “Gussie” Cantwell, 53, of Dartmouth and formerly of Baddeck died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, as a result of a motor vehicle accident.
Born in Baddeck, he was a son of the late Henry and Mary (MacDonald) Cantwell. He was a member of Greenwood United Church, Baddeck. He was employed with Royal Bank in Baddeck and Port Hood then moved to Halifax in 1968, where he was employed with I.A.C. and later a car salesman at various metro dealerships. He became owner and operator of Gus Cantwell Used Cars. A good friend to all and a devoted grandfather, he will never be forgotten.
He is survived by his wife the former Patsy Phillips, daughters, Stacey Perry (Marc), Dartmouth, step-son Craig Harrison, Victoria, B.C., grandchildren, Olivia and Tyra, Dartmouth.
Visitation was 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Sunday in MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck. Funeral 2 p.m. today (Monday) in Greenwood United Church, Rev. Louis Ihasz officiating. Burial in Knox Cemetery, Baddeck Bay.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Diabetes Association or Dartmouth SPCA.
Rita Chambers
74, Dartmouth
Rita Chambers, 74, of Dartmouth died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at the Dartmouth General Hospital.
She was the daughter of the late Alexander and Marybelle (Gillis) Chisholm of Judique, N.S.
She is survived by her husband, George T. Chambers; daughters, Mona Poupart, Brookfield, N.S., Anne, Ottawa, Ont., Sheila Murphy, St. Margaret’s Bay, N.S.; son, Adam, Vancouver, B.C.; seven grandchildren and one sister, Isabel Chisholm, Sydney.
She was predeceased by brother, Allan J. Chisholm, Sydney, two brothers and one sister in infancy.
Funeral will be held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. in St. Thomas More Church, Dartmouth. Private burial in Colchester County.
Veronica (Bon) Dolomont
83, Dartmouth
Veronica (Bon) Dolomont, of Dartmouth formerly of 60 Pleasant St., North Sydney, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, in hospital after a short illness.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral services were held at St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, Dartmouth. Interment in Memorial Gardens, Dartmouth.
Ella Beatrice Barkhouse
51, Dartmouth
Ella Barkhouse, 51 of Garshen Road, Dartmouth, passed away Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at the Dartmouth General Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late William and Jean Baggs, Glace Bay. Ella was a member of Epworth United Church, Glace Bay and also of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Dartmouth.
Ella is survived by her husband, Raymond; two sons, Michael (Heather) and Brian (Crystal), both of Dartmouth; sisters, Ruby (Dougal) MacAulay and Vera (Robert) Moore, both of Sydney, Christina (Cyril) Bradbury, Lillian (William) MacCormack, Marion (Jerry Pye, M.P.), and Marilyn (Sterling) Arnold, all of Dartmouth, Irene (John) Reid and Jenna Winters, both of Glace Bay; two brothers, Melvin (Louise), Glace Bay and Allister (Linda), Alexandria, Ont.; four grandchildren, Ross, Ryan, Meghan and Katelyn, all of Dartmouth. She is also survived by a number of nieces; nephews; uncle, Cecil Drover and aunts, Jean Drover, Lucy Baggs and Pearl (Melvin) Finalyson.
The remains are resting at the Atlantic Funeral Home, Dartmouth. Graveside service will be held at the Dartmouth Memorial Gardens with Rev. P.A. Sandy MacDonald officiating.
Donations to the Palliative Care Society or to a charity of choice are suggested as memorials.
