James Colin MacDonald
67, Sydney Mines
James Colin MacDonald, 67, of 7 Amber Drive, Sydney Mines, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born in Port Hawkesbury, he was the son of the late James Colin and Mary (MacDougall) MacDonald. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Sydney Mines. He was employed at Marine Atlantic for 36 years. He was a long-time member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 8, Sydney Mines, and the Northern Yacht Club, North Sydney.
He is survived by his wife Jerry (McCabe) MacDonald; his sons, James Colin (Debbie), Glace Bay, Reggie (Marina), North Sydney, and Wayne (Paula), Kingston Ont.; his daughters Julie (James) Devoe, Sydney Mines, and Yvonne (Craig) Sampson, Sydney Mines; his step-sons Doug (Barb) Sulliman, Rye, New York, and Jamie (Heather) Sulliman, Packenham, Ontario; his brother Rod (Dougie) MacDonald, Port Hawkesbury, and by 14 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife Florence (MacKinnon), a brother John and a sister Mary Edna.
Visitation was held Monday in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The Funeral will take place today (Tuesday) at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.

Thomas Douglas McGean
60, Sydney Mines
Thomas Douglas McGean, 60, of 37 Barrington Street, Sydney Mines, passed away peacefully on Sept. 2, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
Born on March 16, 1940, in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late John E. and Viola (Jessome) McGean. Doug was a member of St. Pius X Parish, Sydney Mines, and having a great love of music, he enjoyed being a member of the Parish Choir. He was a former Fourth Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus. He was employed with the C.B. Development Corp. retiring in 1997.
He is survived and will be sadly missed by his devoted and loving wife of 40 years, Cynthia (Eveleigh) McGean; his daughters Debbie (Mrs. Gregory MacDonald), North Sydney, and Denise, Sydney; his son Douglas Jr. (Kim), Grande Prairie, Alberta; and his grandchildren Michael, Justin and Kristy. Also surviving are his brothers Eddie (Lillian), Groves Point, Robert (Jean), Melvin (Eunice), and Gordon (Jeannie), all of Sydney Mines; his sisters Mary (Henry) Dormeidy, Madonna (Art) Brown and Shirley Devoe, all of Sydney Mines; his sister-in-law Eleanor McGean, Sydney Mines and brother-in-law Jim Merritt, St. Catharines, Ont., and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Doug was predeceased by his sister Jean Merritt, a sister in infancy and his brother Lawrence.
Visitation today (Tuesday) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The Funeral will take place on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Rev. Tony MacDonald officiating.

Eldon J. Pickles

Eldon J. Pickles, 61, of 160 Atlantic St., Sydney Mines, died Sunday Sept. 10, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines he was the son of the late Robert and Olive (MacKeigan) Pickles. He was a member of Carman United Church, Sydney Mines. He was member of the IBEW Local 1852.
Eldon is survived by his wife Mary Georgina (Witheral); his sons, George, London Ont., Benjamin (Lesley), Sydney, and Blair (Bernadette), Oshawa Ont.; his grandchildren, Jordon, Brittany, Michael, Jason and Kathryn; his sisters, Shirley Carruthers, Anna O’Handley and Emily Cornford and his brother James.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brother Harvey in infancy.
Visitation today (Tuesday) 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The FuneraI will take place on Thursday at 3 p.m. in Carman United Church, Rev. Karen Ralph officiating. Burial in Brookside Cemetery.

Ronald Bernard MacDonald
49, Sydney Mines
Ronald Bernard MacDonald, 49, of 9 York St., Sydney Mines, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in North Sydney, he was the son of the late Ronald Bernard Sr. and Rita Mae (MacLean) MacDonald.
He was a member of St. Pius X Parish, Sydney Mines. He was employed with National Sea until its closing.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Ann (Mrs. Paul MacKeigan); his sons, Russell (Cindy Parks) and Jody (late Mary Lou Currie); his sisters, Angela (Mrs. Everett Herridge), Laura (late Mr. Leonard Pye) and Carolyn (Mrs. Leo Bonar); his brothers, John (Lorraine), Brian, Robert, Leonard (Rachael), Eric (Janet) and Clarence; grandchildren, Russell, Glen, Candace, Angelita, Devon, Shaundell, Trevor and Breanna; several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are close friends, Agnes MacAuley and David Seaward.
He was predeceased by a sister, Marlene and a brother, Charles.
Visitation today (Friday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Main Street, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Pius X Church with Rev. Tony MacDonald officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.

Anne Adelaide (Lockman) Clooney
83, Sydney Mines
Anne Adelaide (Lockman) Clooney, 83, a native of Sydney Mines, died peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at the Congregation of Notre Dame Health Centre, MacGillivray Guest Home, Sydney.
Born and educated in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Sayde (Egan) Lockman.
She leaves to mourn two sisters, Bernadette (Edward, deceased) Casebier, Washington State, and Peg (Bill, deceased) Murphy, Edmonton; two brothers, James (Muriel, deceased), Richmond, B.C., and William (Mary), Elliot Lake, Ont. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Albert in 1993, and her brothers; Jack and Kevin.
For many years of her adult life, she lived in Montreal where she was employed at the Royal Bank, Place Ville Marie. In 1971, she returned to Sydney Mines to care for her parents. Subsequently, she was employed for several years at the main branch of the Royal Bank, Charlotte Street, Sydney. She was an avid sportsperson and a gifted craft maker.
A devout member of Immaculate Conception Parish, she served many years as sacristan of the church. She was also a member of the AOH and the CWL.
Visitation will be held Sunday, Sept. 24, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral mass will be held Monday, Sept. 25, at 2 p.m. in Immaculate Conception Church with Fr. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Sydney Mines.

Malcolm James Ferguson

Malcolm James Ferguson, of 14 Brown St., Sydney Mines, passed away Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at the QEII Health and Sciences Centre, Halifax.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late James A. and Norah (Eastwood) Ferguson. Malcolm was well known for his active involvement in Maritime and Canadian Harness Racing.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia (Trish) DiSano; brother, Robert (Judy), Halifax; niece, Judith (Gord) and his nephew, Jamie (Melissa).
Visitation will be held Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place on Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines, with Rev. Ian MacLeod officiating. Burial in Brookside Cemetery.
