Thomas Peddle
91, Sydney Mines
Tommy Peddle, 91, a resident of Harbourview Hospital Veteran’s Wing and formerly of 58 Lamond St., Sydney Mines, died Saturday, Oct. 1, 2000, at the residence.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Arthur and Mary (Finney) Peddle.
He was a member of Trinity Anglican Church and a veteran of the Second World War, having served overseas as a corporal with the Cape Breton Highlanders. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 008, Sydney Mines, and a retired employee of Princess Colliery.
He is survived by his daughter, Dorothea (Mrs. Alex Harrietha), Sydney Mines; four sons, Bobby (Elaine) and Thomas (Bunnie), both of Burlington, Ont., Arma in Hamilton, and Jackie, North Sydney. He is also survived by a sister, Winnie in Ontario, and a brother, Fred, Sydney Mines. There are also 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ann Peddle, daughter, Lorna and brothers, James, John and Arthur.
There will be no visitation by request. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at 2 p.m. in Trinity Anglican Church with Rev. Brenda Drake-MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery, under the direction of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home.
Ann Nicol
70, Sydney Mines
Ann Nicol, 70, of 7 Clyde Ave., Sydney Mines, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late David and Helen (Norton) Nicol. She received her early education in Sydney Mines and graduated from the Sydney City Hospital School of Nursing in 1951. She was a supervisor at the City Hospital until 1957. She graduated from the Maritime School of Social Work in 1962 and was employed with the Children’s Aid Society in North Sydney until she retired in 1994. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family.
There will be no visitation or service. Cremation has taken place.
Donations may be made to the Cape Breton Palliative Care, Trinity Anglican Church or any charity.
Ivy Maxwell
82, Sydney Mines
Ivy Maxwell, 82, of 21 Windsor Ave., Sydney Mines, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born at Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late James and Christina (Erskine) Robertson.
She was a member of Carman United Church, Sydney Mines.
She is survived by two sons, Leonard (Donalda), Sydney Mines, David (Linda), Florence; daughter-in-law, Valda Maxwell, Sydney; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, David, son, Lawson, brothers, Robert, Barcaly, James, William, Albert and David and sisters, Christina and Margaret.
At Ivy’s request, there will be no visitation. Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 6, 2000 at 2 p.m. in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Karen Ralph officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.
As memorials, donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetic Association.
Jenny Collier
Sydney Mines
Jenny Collier, of 8 Oxford Ave., Sydney Mines, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, following a brief illness.
A life-long resident of Sydney Mines, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Jean Taylor. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Sydney Mines.
She is survived by her loving husband, William A. (Bill); daughters, Yvonne (Mrs. John Roberts), Dartmouth, and Marilyn (Mrs. George Baillie), Coxheath. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren, Mark Baillie and his wife Barbara, Charleston, S.C., Jeff Roberts, Dartmouth, Aaron Baillie, Ottawa, and Mara Lyn Baillie, Coxheath. Also surviving are sister, Dolores Stoodley, North Sydney and brothers, Charles and Thomas Taylor, Sydney Mines and a special nephew, Lawrence Taylor, Oromocto, N.B.
She was predeceased by her brother, John, Sydney Mines.
Jenny was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. In addition to being an excellent cook, she also enjoyed knitting and sewing for family and friends. In their younger years, Jenny and her husband Bill were avid skaters, having skated in many rinks, both indoor and outdoor, in the local area and well beyond.
Visitation will be held at G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15. The funeral mass will be held Monday, Oct. 16 at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines, with Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Donations may be made on her behalf to the Children’s Wish Foundation or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Jean Currie Edmunds
79, Sydney Mines
Jean Currie Edmunds, born Dec. 18, 1920, died in the Northside General Hospital on Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000.
She was the youngest of eight children of the late Allison and James Simpson.
Jean was a member of Carman United Church and the Cann Rebecca Lodge.
Jean is survived by two daughters, Allison, with whom she resided and was cared for lovingly for the past nine years and her oldest daughter, Betty, her son-in-law, Paul Viva and her grandchildren, Vanessa, Paul David and Tony, all residing in Sydney Mines, her son-in-law, Logan MacKay and grandson, Robbie, residing in Halifax and her sister, Agnes in Boston.
She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon, sister, Nellie and brothers, Walter, Bill, John, James and Charles.
Jean’s visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, today (Wednesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, 3 p.m. in Carman United Church with Rev. Karen Ralph officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.
As memorials, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society or to Carman United Church.
Neil Charles (Chuck) MacCormack
85, Sydney Mines
Neil Charles (Chuck) MacCormick, 85, of View Street, Sydney Mines, passed away peacefully at the Northside General Hospital on Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000.
Born in Sydney Mines, Charlie was ninth of 11 children born to the late Charles and Mary Ann (Beaton) MacCormick.
Charlie was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish and the Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council 2024, Sydney Mines. He retired in 1976 after more than 30 years with the Canadian National Railway. His love of golf saw him as an active member of the Seaview Golf and Country Club in North Sydney. Charlie was one in a long line of true gentlemen – a heart of gold, gentle and refined in manner, kind and generous in nature.
Surviving are two sons, Frank (Anne Marie), of North Bay, and John, of Halifax; two daughters, Mary Ann (John MacNeil), of Sydney, and Catherine (David) Collins, of Bras d’Or; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson; two sisters, Theresa MacIsaac, of Margaree, and Eileen MacCormick, of Sydney Mines; and a brother, Bill MacCormick, of Sydney Mines.
Charlie was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, the former Anne Ethel MacNeil, of Sydney Mines, as well as four brothers, Bruno, Frank, Michael and Daniel and three sisters, Florence, Camillus and Genevieve.
Visitation for the late Mr. MacCormick will be held at the G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home today (Monday) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines, with Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
