John Dickson Caffiers
53, Sydney Mines
John Dickson Caffiers, 53, of Shore Road, Sydney Mines, passed away at home Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001.
Born in Bras d’Or, John is the son of Jeannie (Dickson) Caffiers and the late Joseph Caffiers.
John served for a time with the Canadian Army, he also worked for a number of years as a sheet metal worker in Ontario. In later years John worked as a supervisor with C.S. Marble, Rochester, N.Y. and for a time as an oiler and deckhand on the great lakes and foreign trade ships. He also served with the Canadian Corp of Commissionaires.
John is survived by one brother, Joseph (Doris), Rochester, N.Y.; sisters, Marilyn, North Sydney, Mary (Lendal) MacRae, Southside Boularderie, and Nessie (Michael) Astephen, North Sydney.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Brain Injury Association of Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Chapter.

Kenneth Paul Marsh
70, Sydney Mines
Kenneth Paul Marsh, 70, of 25 Forrest St., Sydney Mines, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, peacefully at home.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Edward Louis and Millicent Mae (Rothwell) Marsh.
He was a member of Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines. He was a retired carpenter and coal miner, having worked at Princess Colliery and was an avid hunter and sportsman.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; daughters, Valerie Mae Russell (Edward), Peggy-Lynn Marsh (Jackie), Lorna Maureen MacLean (Paul); sons, Lewis Gordon (Anne), Derek Kenneth (Marie), David William (Karen), Christopher Steven, Peter Wayne (Judy); sisters, Agnes King, Bras d’Or and Veronica Galli, Ontario; 21 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his son, Barry Edward, sisters, Ann Jessome, Josephine MacDowell, Eleanor Eveleigh, Sybil Farrell and brothers, Carden and Lewis.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, today (Tuesday) from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, 2 p.m. in Trinity Anglican Church with Rev. Brenda Drake-MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery, Tobin Road.
Mary Ann Brown
86, Sydney Mines
Mrs. Mary Ann Brown, 86, of the Northside Community Guest Home and formerly of Florence, and 96 Pond Road, Sydney Mines, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Burin, Newfoundland, she was the daughter of the late John and Sarah (Clark) Pyke.
She was a member of Wilson United Church, Florence.
She is survived by daughters, Ida (Jackie) Finney of Sydney Mines, Judy (Bud) Boudreau of Bras d’Or, Glenda (Al) Provoe of Glace Bay, sons, John (Alice) of Margaree, Jimmy (Donna) with whom she resided, and three step-sisters, Florence (Norman) Patey of Florence, Stella King of Florence, Alice (Sam) Hodder of Newfoundland, 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband William, brother Tom Pyke, step-father George Hines and step-brother Kenneth Hines.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Wilson United Church with Reverend Allan Hallett officiating. Burial will in Brookside Cemetery. As memorial, donations may be made to Wilson United Church, the Canadian Cancer Society or the Palliative Care Society.
Rosina MacIntyre

Rosina MacIntyre of 3 Church St., Sydney Mines, passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at the Northside Community Guest Home, North Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late John and Catherine (Higgins) Reilly. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish.
She is survived by her daughter, Lorraine (Tom) Woodfine; sons, John R. (Gloria) MacIntyre, Barrie (Lenore) MacIntyre and Joseph (Maureen) MacIntyre, a step-sister Marcella Dinault and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, John James MacIntyre, daughter, Mary MacDonald, son, Brian, brothers, Sonny, John, Alphonse, Wilfred and Joseph and her sisters, Agatha Crane, Annie Robinson, Isabel Ambrose, Katie Fuller and Mary Haley.
Visitation will be held today (Thursday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place Friday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church with Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Northside Community Guest Home.
Tommy Jessome
57, Sydney Mines
Tommy Jessome, 57, of 39 Butts St., Sydney Mines, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at home.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Tommy and Elizabeth ‘Lizzie’ (MacDougall) Jessome.
He is survived by his brothers, Kenneth, Sarnia, Ont., Alex (Eckie), St. Catharines, Ont., and Gerry (Duke) MacDougall, Fergus, Ont., and his stepfather, Duncan White, Sydney Mines.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Dennis Jessome.
Visitation Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Rev. Tony MacDonald officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Maria Johanna (McGean) Dove,
85, Sydney Mines
Maria Johanna Dove, 85, passed away peacefully March 10, 2001, at the Miners’ Memorial Manor, Sydney Mines.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Soloman and Margaret (Williams) McGean.
She is survived by her son, Joseph, Sydney; her brother, Raymond, Sydney Mines; her sister, Ann McLean, Englishtown; and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, William Dove; her sons, William Jr. and Gerald Francis; and her brothers, George, Joseph, Saul and Ronald.
There will be no visitation; cremation has taken place.
A memorial mass will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines with Rev. Tony MacDonald officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of choice. Arrangements under the direction of G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
