Ambrose Sampson
48, Sydney Mines
Ambrose A. Sampson, 48 of 1 MacLean St., Sydney Mines, formerly of Bras d’Or, passed away peacefully at the Northside General Hospital, Monday, March 12, 2001, surrounded by his family.
Born in Big Bras d’Or, he was the son of Jane (Conway) Sampson and the late Enos Sampson. Brosie was a long time employee of the N.S. Power Inc. before his illness.
He is survived by the pride of his life, son, Stephen (Bumper) and fiance, Shelly, Edmonton; brothers, Enos (Bernadette), Toronto, and Arthur (Judy), London, Ont.; sisters, Patricia (Urban) Day, Lorraine (Dominique) Boudreau, Bras d’Or, Olive (John) Fraser, Sydney Mines, Doreen (John) MacPhail, London, Carlyn (Keith) Voutier, Bras d’Or. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and his special buddy, Devon, his grandnephew.
Besides his father, he was predeceased by two brothers in infancy.
He will be loved and missed by family and friends.
Visitation today (Tuesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral will take place Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church with Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bras d’Or.
No flowers by request. Donations may be made to the N.S. Lung Association, the N.S. Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of choice.

Ronald Farley Cameron
47, Sydney Mines
Ronald Farley Cameron, age 47, of 68 Main St., Sydney Mines passed away Thursday, March 15, 2001.
Born in Sydney, Ron was the son of Perley and the late Joan (MacNeil) Cameron.
Ron was a long-time employee of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12 and was also an active member. Among his hobbies, Ron enjoyed listening to country music, spending time on the Mira with friends and family, tinkering with cars and wandering the aisles of Canadian Tire.
Surviving Ron are his wife Denise (nee Hannem) and daughter Erica. Ron is also survived by his father Perley, Sydney River; three brothers, John and wife Muriel (Babs), Sydney, Robert and wife Cindy, Calgary, and Paul, Calgary; two sisters, Colleen and husband Peter Martin, Sydney, and Barbara, Sydney. Ron leaves behind several nieces and nephews and will be sadly missed by all.
Ron was predeceased by one brother, Jamie and his mother, Joan.
His remains will rest at Francis Funeral Home, Main Street, Sydney Mines, where visitation will take place Friday, March 16 from 7-9 p.m. Services will be held at Immaculate Conception Church, Saturday, March 17 at 1:30 p.m., Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Family requests donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.

John Charles (Jack) McKeough
Sydney Mines
John Charles (Jack) McKeough of Sydney Mines passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at the Northside Community Guest Home, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Dr. William Thomas and Radagonda (Livingstone) McKeough. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Sydney Mines.
He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth MacDonald, Sydney Mines, with whom he resided; and his brothers, Harvey, New Glasgow, and Dr. Liam, North Sydney.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his stepmother, Margaret (MacLeod) McKeough, his brothers, Frank, Dr. Tom and Connor and his sisters, Alice and Nancy (Mrs. C.M. Haley).
Visitation today (Wednesday) 7-9 p.m. only at G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place Thursday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Northside Community Guest Home.

Ann Gordon
81, Sydney Mines
Ann Gordon, age 81, a resident of Jacob Street, Sydney Mines passed away Monday, April 2, 2001, at the Northside General Hospital in North Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Esther (Jones) Walker.
She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Sydney Mines. She was a member of the Catholic Women’s League. Ann was also an associate member of the Congregation of Notre Dame. In her earlier years she worked as a clerk for MacPhee Jewellery in Sydney Mines.
Surviving are two sons, Adrian (Colleen), North Sydney, Terry (Debbie), Cole Harbour, N.S.; one brother, Raymond Walker, Sydney Mines; also by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Raymond, two brothers, Harry and Bill, two sisters, Jessie and Rose.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. Funeral mass to be held Monday, April 9, 2001 at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church in Sydney Mines with Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating.
Burial to take place at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.

Funeral mass for the late Ann Gordon of Jacob Street, Sydney Mines, who passed away Monday, April 2, 2001, at the Northside General Hospital in North Sydney, will be held Monday, April 9, 2001, at 10 a.m. from Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines with Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating.
Burial to follow at a later date.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.

Vivian Fortune
75, Sydney Mines
Vivian Fortune, 75, of Sydney Mines, passed away peacefully Monday, April 9, 2001, in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII, Halifax.
Born in Florence, Cape Breton on Jan. 11, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Elizabeth (Barrie) MacDonald.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and is survived by her daughters, Donna (Jim) Campbell, Vivian (Colin) Price, Nadine (John) Power and sons, John (Susan), Don (Sue) and Stephen (Bernice); brothers, Conrad, Cecil, Edward, William ‘Buddy’, Frank; sisters, Mary Garagan, Anne Hutchinson, Viola MacDonald and Carol Johnson. She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren, Stephen and Jaime Campbell, Stephen Price and Vivian (Price) Sims, Jonathon, Ian and Courtney Power, Adam and Erik Fortune, Perry and Damien Fortune, and especially by Matthew and Meaghan Fortune with whom she resided as well as by her great-grandchildren, Brianna Price and Jacob Sims.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Fortune, brothers, Billy, David, Joseph, Harold, Fred and Barry, sisters, Muriel Jessome, Barbara Smith and Helen (Tootie) Kalbehn.
Cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 16 in Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines, Fr. Gerald Dunphy officiating.
No flowers please. Donations in her name may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation or any children’s charity. Private family interment will be held at a later date.

Olive 'Ollie' Frances Aker
84, Sydney Mines
Ollie Aker, 84, of Sydney Mines, passed away peacefully April 7, 2001 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Alfred And Emily Roper.
She was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines.
Survived by two sons, Vernon (Paddy), Halifax, John, Wolfville; four grandchildren, Daniel, Shaunna, Galen and Ryan.
Predeceased by her husband, Maurice; three sisters, Doris Roper, Margaret Boutilier and Christine Luker.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
The late Mrs. Aker will have visitation today (Monday, April 9, 2001) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2001 in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Rev. Ken MacRae officiating, with burial in Brookside Cemetery at a later date.
