Donald Archibald Jardine
85, Sydney Mines
Donald Archibald Jardine, 85, of Harbourview Hospital Veterans Unit, formerly of Sydney Mines, died Sunday, April 8, 2001 at the Harbourview Hospital.
Born in Little Pond, he was the son of the late Thomas and Christina (Martin) Jardine.
He was an adherent of Wilson United Church, Florence. He was a veteran of the Second World War and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 8 in Sydney Mines.
Donald was a retired coal miner.
Surviving are nine daughters, Elsie (Paul) Miazga, London, Ont., Shirley (Peter) Laffin, London, Ont., Colleen (Phillip) MacIntyre, Florence, Bernice, Sydney Mines, Marilyn Carey, Sydney Mines, Judy (Art) Sampson, London, Ont., Donna (Ken) Eveleigh, Oromocto, N.B., Beverly (Al) Arnold, Bloomingdale, Ont., Patsy (Eric) Jessome, Florence; five sons, Alfred (Alice), Victoria, B.C., Gordon (Patty), London, Ont., Bud (Emily) London, Ont., Lawrence (Barb) Florence, Lloyd (Shirley), London, Ont.; one step-son, Gerald (Marg) Butts, Glace Bay; one sister, Agnes Ferneyhough; 31 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Alice Butts; one infant son, Donald; and six brothers, Clarence, John, Benny, Fred, Gordon, Jeffrey.
Visitation will be Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, 10 Clyde Avenue, Sydney Mines.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Wilson United Church, Florence, Rev. Allan Hallett officiating with burial in Brookside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wilson United Church, Florence.
Robert Foster Todd
75, Sydney Mines
Robert Foster Todd, age 75, of Crescent Street, Sydney Mines, passed away at Northside General Hospital, Tuesday, April 10, 2001.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Matthew and Helen Todd.
He is survived by his daughter, Myrna, Debert, N.S.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his son, Dwight, sisters, Elizabeth Leblanc, Patience Dennis, Margaret Day, brothers, Matthew, James and Alex.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Visitation will be held Wednesday 7-9 p.m. at Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home in Sydney Mines.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
Elizabeth Brown
87, Sydney Mines
Mrs. Elizabeth Brown, age 87, a resident of the Miners Memorial Manor, Sydney Mines, died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at the residence.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Gideon and Alice (Burshett) Abbott.
She was a member of Carmen United Church and a former member of the ladies auxiliary and the church choir. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by her daughter, Alice (Fred) Russell, Sydney; granddaughters, Beverly Vickers, North Sydney, Sherry Lynn (Tom) Pyke, New Brunswick; great-grandchildren, Ryan and Brandon Pyke, whom she loved dearly; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Mary Abbott, Lillian MacDonald and brothers, Bill and Thomas Abbott.
Visitation was held in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Friday.
Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, with Rev. Karen Ralph officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.
As memorials, donations may be made to the Miners Memorial Manor or to a charity of choice.
Elizabeth Brown
87, Sydney Mines
Mrs. Elizabeth Brown, age 84, a resident of the Miners Memorial Manor, Sydney Mines, died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at the residence.
Elizabeth is also survived by her husband, Johnny Brown.
Catherine Finnigan
81, Sydney Mines
Catherine Finnigan, 81, of 137 Crescent St., Sydney Mines, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Effie Bonnar.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Sydney Mines.
Catherine is survived by her sons, Clarence (Donna), Sydney Mines, Randall (Nina), North Sydney and George ‘Buddy’ (Donna), Halifax; her daughters, Anne Marie (Mrs. James Clarke), Halifax, Darlene (Mrs. Wesley Devoe), Sydney Mines and Esther (Mrs. Calvin Mosher), Green Hill, Hants Co., N.S. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and her sister Rachael Denney.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, James B. Finnigan; her son, James B. Jr.; her brothers, Clarence Bonnar, Stanley Bonnar, Andrew Gardiner, George Gardiner and Joe Gardiner; her sisters, Evelyn MacMullin and Viola Fifoot.
Visitation today (Monday) from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church with Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Mary Cecilia (Holic) March
67, Sydney Mines
Mary Cecilia (Holic) March of 70 Shore Rd., Sydney Mines, passed away Friday, April 20, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a short illness.
Cecilia was the daughter of the late Daniel and Lillian (Tobin) Holic of Tobin Road.
She was an ordinary member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 8, Sydney Mines, and a member of St. Pius X congregation.
She is survived by her husband, Allan (Seanie) March; two sons, Dannie, Sydney Mines, Allan Jr. (Ruth Ann), Sydney Mines; two grandchildren, Daniel Allan March and Sharlene Tremblett, both of Ajax, Ont.; one great-grandson, Jeremy Tremblett, Ajax, Ont.
She was predeceased by two brothers, John and Daniel Holic and one sister, Matilda, who died in infancy.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will take place at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines, with Rev. Tony MacDonald officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
John Van Auken
83, Sydney Mines
John Van Auken, 83, died peacefully at home at 20 Clyde Ave., Sydney Mines, N.S., Friday, April 20, 2001.
Born in Montreal July 10, 1917, John emigrated to the United States at age 20. There he became a well-known innovator in the electronics and photocopy industries. He later developed Accu-Call, an electronic tennis line-calling system.
With all John’s creative talents, he was a family man at heart. To his death he maintained close sibling ties. In addition to his four children and three grandchildren living the United States, John embraced many others ‘as his own’ creating a sense of family wherever he lived and travelled.
In 1986, John returned to Canada to rekindle a heart connection he’d made years ago with Anna O’Brien Ross of Sydney Mines. John enjoyed being part of the extended Ross family, playing tennis, participating in Rotary Club, while still pursuing his passion for electronics through his company, Annatech Sports.
John will live on in the hearts of those who knew him as well, as a man of undying optimism, full of creative enthusiasm, joie de vivre and tenacity of spirit.
The memorial service celebrating the life and spirit of John Van Auken will be held at Carmen United Church on Clyde Avenue in Sydney Mines at 2 p.m. Saturday, Apr. 28. A reception will follow at the church.
Memorial donations may be made to the John Van Auken/Anna Ross Memorial Tennis Fund, a scholarship program John created to serve the youth of Cape Breton, c/o the Royal Bank of North Sydney.
