Catherine Mary "Kay" Buchanan
90, Baddeck
Catherine Mary “Kay” Buchanan, 90 of Baddeck, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at the Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck.
Born in New Harris, Victoria County, she was a daughter of Rod and Kate (MacLeod) MacLennan. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Kaye will be fondly remembered by her many cousins and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband, Angus Buchanan; her parents and a sister, Sadie.
She was a member of Greenwood United Church, Baddeck and a life member of the UCW.
The remains are resting at MacAskill’s Funeral Home, Baddeck, where visitation will be held today (Wednesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Thursday, 2 p.m. in Greenwood United Church with Linda Scherzinger officiating. Burial in Middle River Cemetery.
Donations may be made to Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck or to a charity of choice.
Lena Mary Pyke
90, Baddeck
Lena Mary (Brown) Pyke, 90, of Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck, formerly of Cape North, Victoria Co., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at the Home.
Lena was born at Halifax and was a member of the Hotel and Restaurant Employees and Bartenders International Union.
She retired from the Nova Scotian Hotel (C.N. Hotel), Halifax after 30 years of service. She was also a member of the Retired Railway Employees Association.
Lena is survived by her sister Margaret Casey, Vancouver and a number of nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by her family from Cape North.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband John Frederick Pyke and common-law husband Kenneth Burton.
The late Lena Pyke will have no visitation. Funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, in St. Joseph Church, Dingwall, Fr. Martin MacDougall officiating. Burial in MacPherson Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home.
Lenora Gardner Sweet
86, Baddeck
Lenora Gardner Sweet, 86, of Baddeck, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at the Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck.
Born in Baddeck Bay, she was a daughter of the late John T. and Rhoda (MacKay) Nicholson.
She was a member of Greenwood United Church, Baddeck. She was a graduate of Maritime Business College in Halifax and then employed with the Royal Bank in Baddeck. She was very active in her church and community and was a past member of the UCW. She was also employed at the Silver Dart Motel, Baddeck.
Surviving are brothers, Charles, Baddeck, Alex, Halifax, Allison, Bedford, Malcolm, Ontario.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest; brother, John George.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial service at MacAskill Funeral Home, 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, with Linda Schenzinger officiating. Burial in Bayview Cemetery, Englishtown.

Lute Voerman
86, Baddeck
Lute Voerman, 86, of Baddeck, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000.
Born November 12, 1914, in Vollenhove, The Netherlands, he was a son of the late Jacob and Lammigje (Van Benthem).
He is survived by his wife, Roelofje (Mooiweer); daughter, Gerri (Floyd) MacDonald, Creignish N.S.; sons, Teunis (Gardia), Sackville N.S., and Lute (Yvonne), Heatherton N.S.; sister, Vroukje, Zwolle, The Netherlands; 11 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son in infancy in The Netherlands; a son, Jacob, Baddeck; six sisters and five brothers, all of The Netherlands.
Lute immigrated to Canada with his family in 1949 and farmed in Big Baddeck until his early retirement in 1975. He was a member and elder of St. Andrew’s United Church, Baddeck Forks. He was a director of the Victoria Farmers Co-op and was an active member in the agricultural community and co-operative movement. He and his wife celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year in August.
The remains are resting at MacAskill’s Funeral Home, Baddeck, with visitation from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today (Tuesday). Funeral services will be conducted at St. Andrew’s United Church in Baddeck Forks Wednesday, Dec. 27, at 11 a.m. Linda Schenzinger officiating. Interment in St. Andrew’s Cemetery.
Family flowers only, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, St. Andrew’s Cemetery Fund, Victoria County Memorial Hospital, or a charity of one’s choice.
Angeline Collins
95, Baddeck
Angeline Collins, 95, of Baddeck, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at the Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck.
Born in St. Joseph du Moine, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Lubin and Olive (Levert) Aucoin.
She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Baddeck. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon; two sisters, Catherine and Marie; four brothers, Theophile, Marcellin, Francis, and William.
The body is resting at MacAskill Funeral Home Tuesday, Jan. 16, with visiting hours from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Rev. Gerald Currie officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Alderwood Rest Home or St. Michael’s Building Fund.
