John Malcolm MacDonald (Johnny Charlie)
75, Baddeck

John Malcolm MacDonald (Johnny Charlie), 75, of Baddeck and formerly of North River, passed away Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Victoria County Memorial Hospital.

Born at the family residence on the Meadow Road, North River on Jan. 17, 1926, he was the son of the late Charles and Margaret (Morrison) MacDonald.

He was a member and elder of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, North River. He was a carpenter by trade and worked for many years in Sydney and in particular at the Sydney Engineering and Dry Dock. For 27 years until his retirement, he was the operator at Norman Fire Tower (Marianna). He also worked in various other capacities for the Department of Lands and Forests. Speaking Gaelic as his first language, he learned English while attending North River School. Gaelic was the language of his preference and he would use it at any time with anyone who could do the same. Many tales of the ‘good ole days’ were shared in Gaelic with his good friends, the late Alex Kerr and Duncan Morrison, as well as many a good song.

He often used his carpentry skills to make furniture for his family and friends and could often be found hanging a door or installing a window for a neighbor. John also had a keen interest in genealogy and was well-versed in local history and was often called upon by many area locals to share in his knowledge. After moving to Baddeck, he greatly enjoyed the time he spent at his cabin in North River. A friend to all, he will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Besides his wife of 45 years, Annie Mae (MacDonald), he is survived by daughters, Anna (Mrs. Brian Briggett) Brockville, Ont., Kathleen Shaw (John Cann), Beechmount, Joan (Mrs. Wendell Murphy), Tarbot; two sons, Robert and Kimball, both of North River.

He is also survived by five grandchildren who were his pride and joy: Christopher MacDonald and Tamara Briggett, Brockville, Ont., Janice Shaw, Baddeck, Patrick Murphy, Hamilton, Ont. and Scott Murphy, Tarbot; and by one great-granddaughter, who brightened many of his days when she came up the hill to visit, Melanie Rhy Shaw, of Baddeck.

He is also survived by sisters, Christene Nicholson, Baddeck, Mae Montgomery and Katherine Montgomery, North River, Sadie (Mrs. Murdock MacLean), Big Baddeck; a brother, Roddie (Josephine), Sydney; and an aunt, Murdena MacLennan, Boularderie.

Surviving also is a special niece Margie (Mrs. Murdock MacLeod), Tarbot; numerous other nieces and nephews who were very important to him.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother Kenneth; a sister, Jessie; and, recently, by a special nephew John Charles (J.C.) in November.
His remains will rest at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in North River.

Visitation was held Sunday, Feb. 18 from 7-9 p.m. and will be held today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held from the church Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 11 a.m.

The service will conducted by Mrs. Shirley Murdock and Rev. Lloyd Murdock. Interment in Riverview Cemetery, North River.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Andrew’s Memorial Fund or a charity of one’s choice.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck.
