Murray Norman Fine
62, Halifax
Murray Norman Fine, 62, of Halifax, formerly of Sydney, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at the QEII Hospital, Halifax, following heart surgery.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Max and Etta (Gaffen) Fine.
Murray graduated from the Valley Forge Military Academy, Wayne, Pa. He was a member of Beth Israel Synagogue, Halifax. Murray was a musician, who enjoyed playing the clarinet, saxophone and piano.
Surviving are his sister, Frances, wife of Henry Pollak; niece, Lora Pollak-Placik and nephew, Dr. Andrew Pollak.
There will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held at the Hebrew Cemetery Thursday, 2:30 p.m. Friends welcome to attend.
Alma Sarah MacPherson
79, Halifax
Alma Sarah MacPherson, 79, of Halifax passed away at home Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001.
Born in Sydney, daughter of the late John and Emily (Cooper) Janes.
She was a member of Edgewood United Church and UCW and member of Shriners Marshettes. She was a devoted wife, mother and a friend to all. She loved entertaining family and friends. She provided support and inspiration to her late husband Mallie during his term as Potentate of Philae Temple.
She is survived by daughter, Jane, at home; son, Brent, Head of St. Margaret’s Bay; twin sister, Vera O’Callaghan, Sydney, and many nieces and nephews. Also by her devoted caregiver and loving friend Rose Marie Priest.
She was predeceased by husband, Malcolm (Mallie) John MacPherson, sisters, Muriel Matheson and Irene Francis.
Visitation Friday, Feb. 24, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Snow’s Funeral Home, Windsor Street. Funeral service will be held at Edgewood United Church, Connaught Avenue, Saturday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. Rev. John Roberts officiating. Burial in Hardwood Hill Cemetery, Sydney at a later date. Donations may be made to Shriners’ Cripple Children’s Travel Fund, 3530 Connolly St., Halifax, B3L 3R3 or a charity of choice.
Martha Gates
66, Halifax
Mrs. Martha Gates (Nee Pierro), 66, of 5815 Charles Street, Halifax, formerly of Eskasoni, passed away peacefully, Friday, March 2, 2001 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Wagmatcook, she was the daughter of the late Charles Pierro and Nancy (Googoo) Marshall.
She was a member of St. Theresa Parish, Halifax.
Surviving is her daughter Sharon Googoo of Waycobah.
Also, two sisters Mary (Joseph) Francis of Membertou, and Annie Marie (Walter) Denny of Eskasoni; two brothers Stephen Charles Pierro of Brockton, Massachusetts, and Vincent Joseph Marshall of Eskasoni; two step-sisters Jessie Sylliboy and Lillian Marshall, both of Eskasoni; a step-brother Billy Marshall of Eskasoni; an aunt Susan Toney of Waycobah and uncles Peter P. Googoo of Wagmatcook, and Bishop Hayes of Glace Bay; along with three grandchildren and a number of nieces, nephews and the Gates Family of Halifax.
She was predeceased by her husband John Gates in 1997, one son Allan, sister Helen and brother Francis Joseph.
The late Mrs. Gates had visitation after 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 4, 2001 at the Gabriel Centre, Eskasoni.
Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. today in Holy Family Church, Eskasoni, Father MacNeil officiating.
Immediately following the mass, Mrs. Gates’ remains will be transferred to the Snow’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax, for visitation from 7-9 p.m..
A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Theresa Church, 6351 North Street Halifax, Father R. MacPherson officiating.
Burial will be in the Gates of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia.

Mary Ann "Nan Rogers" Rudgene
90, Halifax
Mary Ann (Nan Rogers) Rudgene passed away peacefully in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, March 31, 2001, at the age of 90.
She was a daughter of the late Catherine and Peter McInnis, Sydney Mines. Nan was brought up in Sydney Mines and later moved to Halifax with her family. She spent her last 15 years at Northwood Centre and considered the home and her friends at the centre her family.
She is survived by sons, John, Ernie and Cecil, all of Halifax; daughters, Mary Ferguson, Chester, Celine Foran, Bedford, Eva Vanek, Young’s Town, Ohio; sister, Mamie Laidlaw, Sydney Mines; many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be missed by all.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Rudgene (Rogers).
There will be no visitation or funeral service. Nan will be buried in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines, at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to G.R. Francis Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
Kenneth William Cruickshanks
38, Halifax
Kenneth William Cruickshanks, 38, of Halifax passed away Monday, Sept. 4, 2000.
Born Sept. 9, 1961 in Windsor, N.S., he was a son of William Cruickshanks of Lantz and Myrna and Bill Inkpen of Sydney.
He is survived by two brothers, Gregory and wife Holly, Hammonds Plains; Steven and wife Sandra, Lower Sackville; two nephews, James and Jared; four nieces, Nicole, Jessica, Rebecca and Stephanie. A number of aunts and uncles.
Following a family service at Rawdon Gold Mines Union Church, he will be laid to rest near his grandparents, Thelma and Aubrey Meehan.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the IWK Grace Hospital, Halifax.

Robert George (Bob) Hughes
73, Halifax / Sydney River
Robert George (Bob) Hughes, 73 of Armview Estates, formerly of Sydney River, passed away Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, in Armview Estates, Halifax.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late George and Florence (Hulford) Hughes.
He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church, Sydney River.
Previous to his retirement he was a drywall applicator in construction work. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1060.
He is survived by a son, David, Burlington, Ont.; daughters, Lynne (Hughes), Clayton Park, Jody (Snow), Dartmouth, Maureen (Mrs. Bill McGregor), Dartmouth; four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Eileen Doyle, brother, Jack, sister, Mamie.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, 149 Herring Cove Rd., with Rev. Richard Smith officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
