Jessie E. Banfield
74, Halifax
Jessie E. Banfield, 74, of Halifax, passed away Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax.
Born in Glace Bay, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Kenneth and Sarah (McDonald) Smith. A native Cape Bretoner, she was very active in the Young Peoples Society of St. Mary’s Church of England, Glace Bay.
She moved to Halifax in 1956 and worked at Maritime Life until her marriage to Ken F. Banfield on Aug. 24, 1957.
She was predeceased by her husband Ken on Jan. 29, 2000, after 42 years of marriage.
She was a loving mother to sons, Michael (Valerie), Mark (Dawn), Dartmouth; daughter, Wendy, Halifax.
Jessie believed wholeheartedly in the sanctity of the family unit. As a homemaker she was always there for her children growing up and her husband as he built a very prosperous printing business with the full support of Jessie.
In 1972, Ken and Jessie built a cottage in East Petpeswick and over the years that followed turned the cottage into their second home, which became a very large part of their lives and the lives of their family and friends. Entertaining family and friends on special occasions was an integral part of the ‘cottage experience.’
Jessie was proud to be involved in her TOPS club and eventually became leader of her local chapter. Recently she was very proud to reach her goal of becoming a KOPS. She made many friends as a TOPS member and played a large role in helping others reach their goals.
Surviving are her sister, Rhoda (Gilbert MacLeod), Glace Bay, N.S.; brother, Archie (Sarah Smith), Lower Sackville, N.S.; grandchildren, Christopher and Breanna, Dartmouth; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Ethel Green and Donnie McMullen and two sisters at birth.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, in Anglican Church of St. John, 3415 Dutch Village Road, with Rev. Marion Burns officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall.
Family flowers only by request. In honor of Jessie, memorial contributions may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.

Michael Godfrey LeBlanc

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our precious and loving brother, Michael on Thursday, April 26, 2001, at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, Halifax.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late John and Leocadia (MacIsaac) LeBlanc.
He served in the Canadian Armed Forces for several years and later worked on the ice breaker, Sir John A. Macdonald. He was also a professional sign painter.
He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer and two granddaughters, Emma Mae and Rebecca, both of Ontario. Also surviving are sisters, Verna (Jim) Reid, Sandra (Leonard) Porter, Ontario, Geraldine Downey, New York, Judy (Francis) Shebib, Joan (Robert) Shebib, both of North Sydney, Alanna (Art) Vickers, Susan (Monty) Bradley, both of Sydney Mines; brothers, Derek, Manitoba, Kenny (Delma), Middleton, Danny, Ontario; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Blair, Jackie and Felix.
There will be no visitation. Memorial mass will be held Monday, April 30 at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church with Fr. Tony MacDonald officiating. Burial in Saint Mary’s Cemetery.

Eleanor Grace Parkes, RN
86, Halifax
Eleanor Grace Parkes, RN, 86, of Halifax, passed away on Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII.
Born on July 11, 1914, in Montreal, Quebec, she was the daughter of the late Donald and Ada (Laughton) Barton.
She received her early education in both Canada and England. She graduated in 1937, from the Montreal General Hospital School of Nursing. She pursued a career as a registered nurse, working in hospitals in England, Quebec and also at the Eastern Shore Memorial Hospital, Sheet Harbour.
She was well loved and will be sorely missed by, daughter, Pamela Chappell, Fleetwood, Lancashire, England; sons, John (Rita), Edmonton, Alberta, Christopher (Leone), Victoria, B.C., and David (Alyce), Stillwater Lake, N.S.; grandchildren, Ian and Michael, Stephen, Wendy and Christine, Adrian and Trevor, Tracy and Jennifer; and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Winifred Harries, Calgary, Alta. and Gwendolyn Mundell, Lethbridge, Alta.
She was predeceased by her husband, Geoffrey Richard Parkes, a sister, Margaret Neilson and a brother, George Winstanley Barton.
Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. today (Wednesday) in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax, where funeral service will be held in the chapel 11 a.m. Thursday, Rev. Mark Marshall officiating, assisted by Rev. James Purchase. Cremation to follow. Burial will be held at a later date, with her parents at Mount Hermon Cemetery, Quebec City.

Miriam "Minnie" Catherine (Jackson) McDonald
87, Halifax
Miriam ‘Minnie’ Catherine (Jackson) McDonald, 87, of 1271 Church St., Halifax and formerly of 10 Birkley St., Glace Bay, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at her residence in Halifax.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Vincent and Marcella (O’Donnell) Jackson.
She was an adherent of Knox United Church.
She is survived by her companion, Keith Smith; brother, Joe, Glace Bay; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Maddin MacDonald and a daughter, Margaret, five brothers and two sisters.
Visitation will be held today (Thursday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel, Friday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. David MacLean officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Memorials may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
Evelyn McKnight
73, Halifax
Evelyn McKnight, 73, of Halifax, died Tuesday, Oct. 17 2000, in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Allen and Margaret (McNeil) MacCormick.
She was an elementary teacher for many years teaching in Sydney, East Bay, Halifax and Halifax County. She received her BA in 1972 at St. Mary’s University, Halifax. She was an active member of the CWL as well as in many other church-related activities.
Survived by her husband, Nelson, Halifax; stepdaughters, Suzanne Forgeron, Barbara Barber, Bramalea, Ont. Marita Anstey, Bedford; stepsons, Fred McKnight, Vancouver, B.C., Barry McKnight, Halifax, Roger McKnight, London Ont.; sisters, Mary, Sydney, Anna, Halifax, Winnie, Sydney; brothers, Leo and Wilfred, Sydney and 14 grandchildren.
She was predeceased by brothers, Jimmy, Austin and John.
Visitation was held Wednesday, 7-9 p.m. and will be held today (Thursday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Cruikshank’s Funeral Home. Funeral 10 a.m. Friday, in Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Monsignor William Wambolt officiating.

Terrance Lee Vey
57, Halifax
Terry Vey, 57, of 6710 Huron St., Halifax, and formerly of Glace Bay, passed away suddenly at home Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000.
Born and educated in Glace Bay, he was the son of Catherine (Pilling) Vey and the late William Robert Vey.
Terry recently retired after 23 years of dedicated service with the Province of Nova Scotia. He was a respected educator in the field of taxation, a former baseball and hockey coach of young people and an avid golfer.
Terry is survived by his son, Ashely, Halifax; a daughter, Jennifer, Vancouver; his wife, Goldie, Timberlea; a brother, Bob (Eileen), Westmount; a niece, Debby (Simon) Sampson, Westmount; a nephew, Robert (Willena) Vey, Reserve Mines; grandnieces, Crystal and Jadelynn Sampson; a grandnephew, Robi Vey; Louise Vey, the mother of his children; and special friend Sharon, Halifax.
He will be sadly missed by family and friends.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, Oct. 31, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Coxheath, with Rev. Weldon Smith officiating. A private family burial will be held at a later date.

John Hugh Daniel Ferguson
Halifax
John Hugh Daniel Ferguson, Halifax, passed away very suddenly on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000. He was the son of the late Daniel and Christine (MacKinnon) Ferguson. Born in Sydney, he followed in his fathers footsteps and began to work for the CNR. He came to Halifax in 1962 where he met and married Gertrude (MacLeod). He is survived by his loving wife, Gertrude; daughter, Lisa and son-in-law, Dennis Morrison, Prospect Bay; stepdaughter, Susan and son-in-law, Grant Redding, Shelburne; brother, Roy and wife Leah, Sydney; sister-in-law, Priscilla Ferguson; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Rannie, Sydney. Cremation has taken place and visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax, where funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Rev. Robert Brush officiating. Interment will follow in St. Johnıs Cemetery.
