Arthur William Baker
79, Halifax
Arthur William Baker, 79, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, in the Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building, QEII, where he had been a resident for the past several years.
Born in Sydney, N.S., Art was the son of the late Joshua and Lilia (King) Baker, Spring Street.
He lived most of his life in Sydney and was the fire chief for Sydney Steel before taking his retirement in 1984. Prior to that, he was a fire officer at the Point Edward Naval Base and during the Second World War served overseas with the RCAF’s 404 Bomber Command (Ground Crew Aeromechanics).
Art was a member of Christ Church, Philae Temple of the AAONMS, Masonic Lodge No. 84 (Sydney), as well as the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 12, the Air Force Association of Canada and the National Fire Protection Association.
A loving husband and father, he is survived by his son, Michael Joseph (Michelle), Bedford; grandchildren, Mallory and Joshua; special friend, Bryce Taylor; brother, Victor and a sister, Bessie (Hector) MacGibbon, New Waterford; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Art was predeceased by his wife, Mary Jane (Doolan), brother, Jo, sisters, Lillian MacDonald, Glace Bay, Bertha Somers.
The body has been cremated and a memorial service will be held in Christ Church, Sydney, Feb. 3, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Glen Kent officiating. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery. A reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of choice.
Raymond (Hubert Angus) Huett
59, Halifax
Raymond (Hubert Angus) Huett, CPO 1st Class Retired, 59, of Halifax, N.S., died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at the QE II New Infirmary Site.
Born in Sydney, C.B., he was the son of the late Raymond and Margaret (Campbell) Huett.
Raymond entered the Canadian Navy in 1961 and attained rank of Chief Petty Officer First Class before his retirement in April 1989. He joined the Canadian Frigate program until 1996 and then the Y2K program with the Canadian Coast Guard until his retirement.
Raymond will be sadly missed by many friends and family.
Survived by his wife, Sylvia (Sheppard) Huett; two daughters, Michelle (Huett) Helliwell, and Cheryl (Huett) Carroll; son, David Raymond Huett; three sisters, Charlotte Oxby (Bob), Ellen Chiasson (Robert), Sydney, and Valerie MacKeigan (Mike), Sydney; two brothers, Richard (Cathy), Sydney, and Darryl (Lorna), Sydney; two grandchildren, Austin and Tristan.
Visitation will be held 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today (Monday) in J.S. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday in St. George’s Anglican Church, Rev. Gary Thorne officiating. Burial in Oakridge Memorial Gardens.

Dr. Michael MacDonald
88, Halifax
Dr. Michael R. ‘Mickey’ MacDonald, 88, of Halifax, passed away at home on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was a son of the late Daniel and Euphresia (Connell) Macdonald.
He graduated St.F.X. with a B.A. and a BSc. in 1938, and graduated from McGill Medical School with his M.D.C.M. He also graduated from the University of Toronto with a diploma in Public Health. He attended Duke University and the University of North Carolina on post graduate fellowships in Public Health. He practiced family medicine in Reserve Mines later becoming Chief Medical Health Officer for Cape Breton Island.
‘M.R.’ spent many years at the V.G. Hospital, Halifax as both assistant administrator (1951-1969) and as executive director from 1969-1979. He was the long-time registrar of the Provincial Medical Board for Nova Scotia. He was a member of the first group of Nova Scotia physicians to travel to China for medical co-operation with that country.
Survived by his son and only child, Tom, a partner with Blois, Nickerson, Palmeter, and Bryson, in Halifax, and his only grandchild, Michael; sister, Marie, of Halifax.
Predeceased by his wife Eileen (Hartigan), brothers, Larry, Camey, and Fr. George, sister, Loretta Weldon.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, North Sydney. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney, at a later date.
Memorial donations to the QEII Health Sciences Centre Foundation would be appreciated.
Norma Elaine (nee MacPherson) Graham
38, Halifax
Norma Elaine (MacPherson) Graham, 38, passed on peacefully to be with her Lord, surrounded by her family and close friends in Halifax, Feb. 17, 2001, following a very brave battle against breast cancer.
Norma leaves behind her devoted husband, Jack Graham and their children, Hannah (10), John (9), and MacKenzie (5), who Norma loved beyond words. She was deeply loved and will be missed tremendously by her parents, Ralph and Lena MacPherson, of Margaree Valley; sisters, Darlene Pederson (Richard) Hantsport; Natalie, Stratford, Ont., Marilyn Murphy (Leland), Margaree Valley; brother, Ralph, Margaree Valley; her aunt, Sherry MacPherson, Margaree Valley; and Jack’s family, the Grahams, whom she loved dearly.
She was predeceased by her brother, Ralph Fraser, in infancy.
Norma grew up in Margaree Valley and despite moving to Halifax she remained forever a Margaree girl. Norma attended Dalhousie University and Nova Scotia Institute of Technology and worked as a social worker for the city of Halifax. Norma was active in her community as a Sparks and Explorers leader at Bethany United Church, a Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church in Dartmouth and in activities at John W. MacLeod Fleming Tower School, where her three children attend. Norma lived each day guided by her strong faith in God. She was a person with uncommon depth, grace, integrity and love. She had an instinctive ability to reach out to people in need and comfort them under her broad compassionate wings. Anyone who knew Norma considered it a privilege to be included in her circle of friends.
Visitation will be held at Snow’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax, today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 100 Ochterloney St., Dartmouth. A memorial service will also be held at Margaree Valley Baptist Church on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 3 p.m. with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
Norma was an inspiration to many women fighting breast cancer and her wish is that donations be given to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation in lieu of flowers.
Emelda O’Connell
Halifax
Emelda O’Connell, 51, was born in Sydney, N.S. She was the only and much cherished child of the late Jack and Pearl (O’Halloran) O’Connell of Sydney. Emelda was a noted graduate of Holy Angels High, Sydney, N.S., and proceeded to St. Francis Xavier University, where she received her bachelor of education degree. Following her studies at St. FX University, she began her teaching career in Alberta. Upon return to Nova Scotia, Emelda spent her teaching career in the Halifax City school system; these schools included St. Agnes, Fairview Junior High, Elizabeth Sutherland and most recently, Bedford South. Emelda continued her own studies during her career and completed a master of arts and a master of education with distinction from St. Mary’s University, Halifax. To complement her life Ms. O’Connell enjoyed many hobbies and art forms such as furniture making, stained glass work, photography and loved to travel. She willingly shared her talents and her knowledge with all who knew her, be they student, friend or colleague. Emelda is survived by a number of very close and loving colleagues and friends in both the Halifax and Sydney areas. Also in Halifax and Sydney she will be greatly missed by her uncles, aunts and cousins. Visitation was held Thursday, Oct. 9, in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax, between the hours of 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass was held Friday, Oct. 10 at 10 a.m., in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Rockingham, Halifax, Rev. Bernie O’Neill officiating. As was Emelda’s wish, her remains will be returned to Cape Breton for burial. Burial will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks, in the O’Connell family plot, Sunday, Oct. 12, at 1 p.m. Prior to the procession to the gravesite there will be an opportunity for friends and family in Cape Breton to visit from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, Sydney. Family flowers only, donations can be made to a charity of choice. May Emelda rest forever in the peace of the Lord.
Lorraine Nickerson
Lorraine Nickerson, 52, Halifax, formerly of Sydney, passed away peacefully at the Victoria General Hospital on Thursday, March 29, 2001.
She was a daughter of Beulah MacAskill and the late Dan MacAskill of Sydney.
Surviving are her husband, Warren and two sons, Sacha Cigoj (Tammy), Sydney and Jay, Halifax. Her children were the joy in her life.
Lorraine is also survived by two brothers, Donnie (Anne Marie), East Bay, and Irvin (Jean), Sydney; two sisters, Marilyn and Raylene, both of Sydney. Also surviving are three stepchildren Lynn, Clifford and Brian and several nieces and nephews.
She was an employee of the CBRM before moving to Halifax. Lorraine was a member of St. Mark’s parish, Coxheath, where she taught Sunday school. She also volunteered with Reach to Recovery Program through the Canadian Cancer Society, where she enjoyed her one-on-one visits with patients.
Lorraine wanted all her devoted friends and family to know how overwhelming their love and support was to her all through her illness.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or memorial service as per Lorraine’s request.
If you wish to express your sympathy, Lorraine has requested that donations be made to the Cape Breton Palliative Care or the Sydney Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society.
Stanna Grantmyre
59, Halifax
Stanna Grantmyre, 59, died peacefully Saturday, April 21, 2001 at the QE II Health Sciences Centre, Halifax.
Born in Sydney, N.S. and brought up in Sydney River, she was the daughter of the late Mamie (Mary Harriet MacInnes) and Chester Grantmyre.
She was a graduate of Riverview Rural High School and Cape Breton Business College. Registered as a medical laboratory technologist, she worked at laboratories in the Sydney City Hospital, Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, Metropolitan Biomedical Laboratories in Vancouver, and (for the past 25 years) the Victoria General Site of Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre in Halifax. She is a past member of the Sydney Curling Club and the Lingan Golf Club.
She is survived by sisters, Andree (Pyke), Coxheath, N.S., Lynne, Calgary, Alta., Trudy (Koop), Crossfield, Alta.; brother, Innes, Guelph, Ont.; and also by longtime companion Mavis LaRocque, Halifax, N.S.
Cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors to celebrate her life from 7-9 p.m. this evening (Monday) in the Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax.
