KAY HADDAD REMEMBERED AS FUN, CARING WOMAN
Cape Breton Post, Sydney
The owner of a well-known Sydney restaurant is being remembered as a kind, generous woman who was never too busy to stop and chat with her many faithful customers. Kay Haddad - who along with her late husband Simon, owned and operated Kay's Kozy Korner, on Townsend Street, for more than 50 years died Tuesday. Her death came as a blow to many in the local community, including the restaurant's regular customers and its employees. Margie Jobe has worked at Kay's Kozy Korner for 12 years and said she'll remember Kay as a warm, caring person. "Myself and most people who knew her will remember her laugh," she said. "She was full of fun. She was a very warm person." Jobe said the restaurant has a large number of regular customers which she credits to the outgoing personalities of kay and Simon. He passed away in 1999. "Half came for the food and half came for the personalities who ran it," she said. "Kay and Simon both would go around to the tables and talk to the people." Jobe added Kay's death has had an impact on a lot of people because she was such a well known and respected member of the community. "There's a lot of people going to miss Kay. She was a good woman," said Jobe. For Sydney resident Blair Joseph, who grew up about a block away from Kay's Kozy Korner, Kay was a part of his childhood. "She was like a second mother to all the boys in the neighbourhood," he said. "Everybody always went to hang out at Kay's Kozy Korner." Joseph said it was tradition for the boys in the area to stop in at the restaurant for chips and pop on their way home from the former Sydney Forum. "It was a unique place to go. It was a nice place with a good atmosphere," he said. The fact that Kay would let boys from the neighbourhood work off the cost of their meal if they were a little short on money was another added bonus, Joseph recalled. Joseph said he has countless memories from his time spent at the restaurant including the caring and fun relationship between kay and Simon. "It's hard to mention Kay without talking about her husband, Simon," he said. Joseph recalled that Simon faithfully washed the windows of the restaurant every day and Kay would always tell him he missed a spot and he'd do it again. He said the chore was a long-running joke between the couple. He added the couple will also be remembered as generous supporters of the local community. Joseph said he'll remember Kay as a hard working and caring individual. "She was a wonderful person and raised a great family," he said. Haddad is survived by two sons, two daughters, eight grandchildren, and several siblings. Visitation for Haddad will take place today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. The funeral is set for 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph's Church.
