Catherine Mary "Winnie" Flemming
FLEMMING, Catherine Mary "Winnie" - 83, Dartmouth, passed away March 17, 2003, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Sheet Harbour, she was a daughter of the late James and Catherine (Perry) Bell.
Catherine worked for many years as a gem setter/engraver at Sears Canada. In her younger years, she was an avid bridge player and bowled for many years with the St. Lawrence Bowling League.
She is survived by daughters, Catherine (Joseph) Metzler, Lower Sackville; Marilyn (Simon) Warren, Calgary; Estelle (David) Foulkes, Stewiacke; Maureen (Bruce) Marsh, Dartmouth; sons, Kenneth (Sylvia), Fredericton, N.B.; William (Patricia), Charlottetown, P.E.I.; Michael (Vanessa), Hawthorne, Calif.; sisters, Eileen (Andrew) Munro, Halifax; Edith Simpson, Halifax; Mary (Charles) Lawson, Ontario; brother, Charles "Buddy" (Shirley) Bell, Lantz; 22 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, F. Verdun "Bunny" Flemming; daughter, Nancy in infancy; sisters, Nell and Ruth; brothers, William, Hedley, Campbell, Tommy, Jim, and George.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today and Wednesday in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church, 3473 Dutch Village Rd., Halifax. Cremation to follow. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville.
Family flowers only. Donations in memory may be made to the Lung Association of Nova Scotia, St. Vincent de Paul Society or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
Stanley James Keating
KEATING, Stanley James - 84, passed away March 14, 2003. Born March 23, 1918, in Halifax, he was the son of the late Sears and Kathleen Keating.
Stanley was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Fall River. He served in the Medical Corps in the Second World War. He retired from the former Camp Hill Hospital in 1983. He was formally a lifetime member of LWF Fire Department.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia (Cole); sons, James (Vivian), Robert (Janice), Michael (Lorna), Glenn (Jeanine), and Blair (Joan); daughter Mary (Greg); 14 grandchildren; two great-grandsons; sisters, Marie Geizer and Betty Donnely.
He was predeceased by sister, Leitha Doyle.
Visitation will be held 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Sunday in Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Dr., Lower Sackville. Funeral mass 11 a.m. Monday in St. Rose of Lima Church, Father James E. Rent officiating. Interment to take place at a later date. Donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
Caroline Agnes Thibideau
THIBIDEAU, Caroline Agnes - 59. It is with great sadness that the family announces her peaceful passing at home on March 14, 2003, after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer.
Caroline was a 27 year employee of the Nova Scotia Government working within the former Department of Municipal Affairs as a drafting technician. She was a firm believer in the need for drug abuse awareness and educational programs; she was a founding member and long-time president of the Nova Scotia Darts Against Drug Abuse Association. As a volunteer on various local committees as well as being a tireless volunteer within the Drug Dependency Services Unit of the Nova Scotia Hospital, she touched hundreds of lives during her passionate campaigning.
The only daughter of the late John C. Lind and Ruby E. (Doggett) Lind, she is survived by her devoted husband, Rexford. Her legacy will forever live on in her children, Catherine (Michel), Dartmouth; Karen (Richard), Eastern Passage; Terry (Leon), Halifax; James (Rhonda), Beaver Bank; stepchildren, Anita (Kevin), Eastern Passage; Mark (Nancy), Dartmouth. Her hugs will be greatly missed by grandchildren, Jennifer, Nicholas, Sara, Carley, Jamie, Christopher, Spence. She is also survived by brothers, John (Jan), Coldbrook; David (Glenda), Yarmouth; Alan (Leah), Sackville; numerous nieces and nephews.
Her legacy will also live on in those who will remember her as an exceptional friend - Doris Shirley, Kaye "Nanny Kaye" Jewers, and her other girlfriend, Victor Penny. A very special thank you to her dear friend, Bonnie "Bon Bon" McQuinn for the care and compassion she has given to all of us.
In keeping with Caroline's wishes, there will be a private family visitation. Cremation will follow with private family interment in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. Memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Monday in Atlantic Funeral Home Chapel, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. Reception immediately following in Atlantic Funeral Home Family Reception Centre. Family flowers only.

Many thanks go to Dr. Colewell and Joy; Dr. Rhayoum at QEII Health Sciences Centre; Dr. Horton and Susan of the Palliative Care Unit, as well as Dr. Ross, Pauline, Daphnee, and Madeline at King Medical Clinic for their constant extra efforts on her behalf and to the VONs who caringly helped us travel this long and painful journey.
For many reasons we won't forget her; she was loved and cherished for her warmth, her humour and respected for her wisdom and advice, but most of all for a spirit that will remain unforgettable.
Gertrude May Hollett
HOLLETT, Gertrude May - 98, Halifax, passed away March 12, 2003, in QEII Health Sciences Centre. Born in Windsor, Hants Co., she was a daughter of the late Frederick T. and Eliza Ann (Brown) Reid.
She is survived by daughter, Sybil (Austin) Carter; sister, Beryl Daw; brothers, George and Frank Reid; granddaughter, Anne Worrell; great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Robert Worrell, Halifax; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Aubrey Hollett; sisters, Florence (killed in The Halifax Explosion), Laura, Carrie and Pearl; brothers, Frederick Jr., Bennett, Jack and Harold.
No visitation. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. today in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax, Rev. Dana Feltmate and Rev. Carman Riggs officiating. Burial in St. John's Cemetery.

J. Stuart Hutton
HUTTON, J. Stuart - 57, Dartmouth, passed away suddenly Monday, March 10, 2003, at work in Dartmouth. Stuart was born March 12, 1945, in Edmonton and graduated from the University of Alberta with a B.Sc. (1969) and M.Sc. (1971) in mechanical engineering.
He was a member of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta. For more than 31 years, he worked at Defence R&D Canada - Atlantic (formerly DREA) Dartmouth as a Defence Scientist and Engineer. In 1999, he became Leader of the Naval Sonar Group and in 2002, he was promoted to Head of the Technical Demonstration Section. During his career he was a key player in countless successful research programs at DRDC, participating in or leading over 50 sea trials, most of which were conducted aboard CFAV QUEST. He held several patents related to his research. He was valued for his technical leadership, innovative engineering solutions and his willingness to teach others. Away from work, he was a consummate woodworker and was certified as a Dive Master.
Stuart is survived by his beloved son, Eric, Colorado; mother, Eileen; brother, Ernie, both of Edmonton; fiancee, Claire Edwards, North Carolina; nieces and nephews and an extended family of friends whose lives he touched so deeply.
He was predeceased by his father, Irwin; sister-in-law, Debbie.
Stu lived life to the fullest. He was slow to anger and quick to forgive. He will be remembered for his friendly, easy going nature, his joy of laughter, his capacity to laugh at his own mistakes and his love of life, children and the outdoors. His passions included gatherings with family and friends, food, traveling, cycling, diving and skiing. He will be sadly missed by all those who were fortunate enough to have known him. Cremation has taken place.
Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of his life to be held from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, with a spiritual reflection at 2 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home Family Reception Centre, 771 Main St., Dartmouth.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in Stuart's memory to a children's charity of one's choice would be appreciated.
Joseph Edward "Eddie" Gallant
GALLANT, Joseph Edward "Eddie" - 79, Halifax, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 11, 2003, in QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Eddie was born in Piusville, P.E.I., to Isadore and Rose Gallant.
He was predeceased by brothers, Max and Pius.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary; children, Judy (Gary), Joe (Theresa), Mike (Bev), Steve (Gloria), Tom (Pat), Rob (Sheri), Greg (Laurie); grandchildren, Jaclyn, Jennifer, Dan, Sally-Jo, Matthew, Mark, Phil, Laura, Nicole, Alicia, Nick, Amanda, Sarah, Keri Anne, Josh, A.J., Zacharie, Chandler, Morgan, and Nacho.
Eddie leaves us a legacy of love apparent to those he touched in his quiet, spontaneous way of saying things at just the right time. Our memories of Eddie will carry us forward on our journey. He made us laugh and feel loved. He was dedicated to his family. Eddie loved to fish and relax with friends and family. He is missed by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. today, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Friday in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. A funeral service will take place 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary's Basilica, Father Andrew Rembarezyk officiating. Burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville. A reception will follow in the funeral home.
