HIRTLE, Harold Roswell - 81, Deep Brook, Annapolis Co., died January 6, 1999, in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Bakers Settlement, he was a son of the late Joshua and Josephine (Oickle) Hirtle. He was a veteran of the Second World War and a retired service station operator. He was a member of the United Baptist church, Deep Brook, and was an avid card player, hunter and camper. Surviving are his wife, Marjorie (Ripley) Bacon; sons, Allister, Clementsport; Roger, Wilmot; stepson, Merlyn Bacon, Stroud, Ont.; 19 grandchildren; eight-great-grandchildren; sister, Grace Rawding, Clementsvale; brother, Raymond, Northfield. VEINOT, Nelson St. Clair - 67, Maplewood, Lunenburg Co., passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at home. Born in Newburne, he was a son of the late Hibbert and Maude (Zinck) Veinot. He was a member of Parkdale-Maplewood Baptist Church. He was retired from a career of carpentry and spent his last working years at Snyder's Shipyard. He was an avid outdoors man and jack of all trades. Surviving are his wife, the former Barbara Foster; daughters, Carolea (Jeff) Kaulback, Bridgewater; Hayley (Christopher) Martell, Timberlea; granddaughter, Courtney Dawn Martell; brother, Richard, Newburne; sisters, Helen (Everett) Slauenwhite, Marjorie (Kevin) Oickle, both of New Germany. OICKLE, Bert Russell - 84, River Philip, died Saturday, June 5, 2004, in Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Amherst. Born in West Clifford, Lunenburg Co., he was a son of the late Percy and Bessie Mae (Thompson) Oickle. Bert was a veteran of the Second World War. In his early years, he worked at Cobequid Lumber Co., Brookfield Foods and Stanfield's. He was self-employed at Shady Rest from 1968 until his retirement in 1984. Bert was an avid card player of Auction 45's, who enjoyed his tractor, making sauerkraut, and good times with family and friends. He is survived by his wife, the former Louise Greeley; sons, Russell (Marie) and Donald (Sheila), both of Little River; Ronald (Donna), Oxford; Robert (Shannon), Roslin; daughters, Sandra (Fred) Ripley, Chignecto; Bette (Alton) McAloney, Mount Pleasant; 16 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; sister, Reta (Darrold) Kaluza, West Pugwash. He was predeceased by brother, Harry, and sister, Muriel. REFUSE, Allan Roy —80, of Chester, died April 18, 2010, in the VG Site, QEII, Halifax. Born in Chester, Allan was a son of Leo and Isabel (Schnare) Refuse. He served in the Reserve Army during the Second World War. He was a proud long-time member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 44 and lifetime member of Chester Golf Club. He retired as supervisor from the Department of Highways. Allan is survived by his dear friend and companion, Doris Bowser; stepsons, Geoffrey (Sharon) Veniotte and Gerald Veniotte, Chester; sister, Mary-Ann (John) Nauss, East River; brother, Clayton (Lila), Windsor Road; two step grandchildren and a step great-grandchild. Allan was predeceased by his wife, Gwendolyn; sisters, Marion and Brenda, and brothers Clarence and Leonard. Visitation will be Tuesday, 7-9 p.m. in Davis Funeral Home, Chester. KAIZER, Nellie Iris - 86, Lunenburg, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2008, in Harbour View Haven Home for Special Care, Lunenburg. Born in Walden, she was a daughter of the late Percy and Minnie (Joudrey) Zinck. Nellie was a loving mother who spent her time caring for her children as well as other children in the area. She was very much involved in her community and would lend a helping hand wherever it was needed. She was a member of St. Mark's Union Church, Walden, where she was a member of the choir and the ladies aid and guild for many years. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by daughters, Ann (Elroy) Tanner, Blue Rocks; Mary Ann (Steve Varner), East LaHave; son, Allan, Blockhouse; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Besides her parents, Nellie was predeceased by her husband, Basil Kaizer; daughters, Minnie and Marilyn; sisters, Maud Veinotte, Lavania Veinot, Grace Langille, and Cora Zinck. Funeral arrangements are under direction of Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Highway 3, Lunenburg, where a memorial service to celebrate Nellie's life will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. with Rev. He was a past employee of the former Gold River Pulp Company and was also a past employee for Haley Ernst of Mahone Bay as well as various other local companies, he then retired after working for ABCO Plastics Plant, Mahone Bay. Surviving are his wife, the former Nellie Zinck; daughters, Marilyn Kaizer, Bridgewater; Ann (Elroy) Tanner, Blue Rocks; Mary Ann Rockwell (Steven Varner), Bridgewater; son, Allen (Carolyn) Kaizer, Walden; sisters, Lailiah Johnson, Chester Grant; Mary (Edward) Peters, Whynotts Settlement; Meriel Kaizer, Pleasantville; Myrtle (Ross) Wilnoff, Queensland; brothers, Clementh, Gold River; Robert, Toronto; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Prior to his retirement, he had worked at National Sea Products, Lunenburg for 23 years, first as a truck driver and later as a fish sorter. Lennie was a member of the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War and retired from the HMCS Dockyard, Halifax after 23 years of service. Sarah Selena Greek, 97, Lunenburg, passed away Wednesday, December 25, 2002, in Mahone Nursing home, Mahone Bay. Born in Newburne, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Barbara (MacKay) Veinot. Sarah was a hard working homemaker who took much pride in everything she did.She had great compassion for the less fortunate and always had a door open to help anyone in need. She was a strong and very steady person who even helped out many children in the community, also boarding many fishermen in her home. In the 1960s and 70s, Sarah worked at National Sea Products, Lunenburg. She was a wonderful cook, who always had special goodies made for anyone who came to her home. Her grandchildren were very important in her life and they referred to her as the wonderful lady we called Nanny Greek. She is survived by son, Wilfred, Sr. (Irene), Centre; brother, Albert Veinot, New York; grandchildren, Sandra Jean (Bill) Thompson, Ontario; Terry Patrick, British Columbia; Wilfred, Jr. (Diane), New Germany; George (Shirley), Barss Corner; Paulette Hirtle; 19 great grandchildren; six great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Sidney; daughter, Pauline; sons-in-law, Allan Patrick, Kay Keighton; grandson, Timothy; brothers, Joseph, Seaforth, Solomon, Hibbert; sisters, Eunice, Rebecca, Etter, Maude, and Nellie Veinot. Born at Springfield she was the former Bessie Mae Acker, daughter of the late Joseph and Angeline (Woodworth) Acker
She is survived by one daughter, Ruth (Mrs. Eugene Best), Truro; one son Clarence, Wellesley Hills Mass. one brother Caleb, Lake Pleasant; nine grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sons and one daughter, five brothers and five sisters.
The body is at Warren T. Roop Funeral home where funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Rev. John Leddicote officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Albany.
