Mrs. Solomon Hebb
(Anna Mary Catherine Wile Hebb)
The many friends of Mrs. Solomon Hebb will regret to hear of her death, which occurred on the afternoon of the 29th, ult. About seven weeks ago she was operated on by Dr. McKay of Halifax, for appendicitis; and for some time it was hoped that, not withstanding her advanced years, she would be nursed back to health; but unexpected complications set in and at six o'clock Saturday evening she passed peacefully away.
It is but justice to say that the deceased was in many respects a remarkable woman. She was the eldest daughter of the late Andrew Wile (son of John) and was born in a house still standing on King Street, on the 10th. of March, 1845. She was a pupil of Miss Mary Harley, who taught one of the first schools in Bridgewater.
At the age of thirteen she moved with her parents to Lapland, one of the pioneer settlements, twelve miles from Bridgewater, where she resided till her marriage seven years later, since which time she has lived in Bridgewater. Her married life has been one of loving fidelity and devotion to her husband and children; revealing a remarkable business capacity coupled with lofty intellectual and moral ideals. Her children have responded nobly to her devotion to their interests and have all taken places in the first rank of respectability.
Frank, the eldest, began life as a carpenter, travelled through the Western States, superintended the building of bridges on the Great Northen Railway for several years, finally settling in Montana. Last year he built the Montana State Building for the St. Louis Fair. He is married and living in comfortable circumstances at Billings, in the beautiful valley of the "Yellow Stone." Bertha Boyd, after a brilliant career at Dalhousie, was appointed to South Africa in the first contingent of teachers, and won such favour with the board that she has been permanently engaged in Normal school work in Johannesburg. Arthur graduated in arts and medicine at Dalhousie and is practising successfully at Chester, Nova Scotia. Thomas-Carlyle, after taking three degrees at Dalhousie and winning the London University scholarship, took a post graduate course at the University of Chicago, and was made a Doctor of Philosophy, with high honours. It would, of course, be unfair to overlook the father's influence in all this. Mr. Hebb, being a man of industry and integrity; but if when the remaining family are united one should ask how all this had been accomplished, father, sons, and daughter would unhesitatingly exclaim, " Mother did it all." "Show me a virtuous woman; her price is above rubies."
Although lacking the advantages of an education, Mrs. Hebb had, by judicious reading and persistent reasoning, pushed herself far beyond the pale of illiteracy and was a most intelligent and agreeable companion. She had a wide circle of devoted friends among all classes of society. She found time, and made opportunity to travel, visiting Boston and New York several times, and on one occasion, London, making many accurate and interesting observations. In the month of May she had the pleasure of seeing all her boys home; and it is much to be regretted that the circle was incomplete through the absence of her only daughter, Bertha. Inexorable death takes no heed to the needs of affection, but as the loved ones are borne away, we may hear coming faintly back through the corridor, "Sometime, Somewhere!"
