Solomon Hebb
1839-1935
Death at an early hour Sunday morning brought to a peaceful close the life of one of the oldest and most highly esteemed residents of the community in the person of Solomon Hebb, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. W.F. MacKenzie, with whom he spent the past ten years. Mr.Hebb who was nearing the century mark was 96 years of age. He had been ill about a month.
A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Hebb, he was descended from one of the pioneer families of Lunenburg County. His wife, formerly Miss Anna Mary Wile, also of pioneer stock, predeceased him thirty years ago.
Mr. Hebb was widely known as a skilled mechanic; having constructed many mills of various designs throughout his native county. Keenly interested in farming he specialized in fruit growing as a hobby. During his declining years of life, he occupied his leisure moments in the growth and curing of tobacco for his personal use. Mr. Hebb, whose mentality was not impaired by his years, was an extensive reader and was greatly interested in current events.
In early life he was an officer in the local militia and was a pensioner of the Fenian Raid. At the time of Confederation Mr. Hebb changed his political views and ever since has been a steadfast Conservative. He was a staunch member of the former Presbyterian Church.
Besides his daughter, he is survived by two sons, Dr. A.N.Hebb, of Dartmouth; and Dr. T.E. Hebb, of Vancouver. A son, Frank, died in Billings, Montana, three years ago.
The funeral was held from the residence of his daughter on Monday afternoon. Rev. W.K. Read officiated.
