MORTON, Basil Freeman - 80, Hebbville, passed away Sunday, August 10, 2008, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in New Germany on October 22, 1927, he was the son of the late Leo and Maude Morton. Basil is survived by his daughter, Diane Morton (Gregory Nauss), Hebbville; sisters, Glenda Ramey, New Germany; Vera Fancy, Northfield, and Hazel, Digby; grandchildren, Lisa, Scott, Matthew, and Sheena; great-grandson, Alexander, along with several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Bernard, and sister, Beulah Lohnes. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Bridgewater, where the funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Rev. Ivan Norton officiating. JOUDREY, Gladys M. - 87, New Germany, died January 27, 1993, in Victoria General Hospital. Born in Mahone Bay, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Rosena (Eisnor) Lantz. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a member of Epworth United Church, New Germany. She is survived by three daughters, Kaye (Mrs. Herbert Eagles Sr.), Newcombville; Nora (Mrs. Douglas Nauss), New Germany; Shirley (Mrs. Donald Weagle), Conquerall Mills; two sons, Arthur, Upper Tantallon; Garnet, at home; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many nieces; a nephew. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph; four sisters, Idella, Bessie, Nora, Glennis; four brothers, Clarence, Fletcher, Morvin, Charles; grandson, Scott. ACKER, Doris G. - 88, Dartmouth, passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 6, 2008, in Oakwood Terrace. Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late Michael H. and Frances (Roberts) Campbell. Doris was a long-time member of St. Anthony's Parish, Dartmouth, and was a member of the CWL for over 40 years. She moved to Kitchener, Ont., during the wartime to help out in a munitions factory. She worked as a lunch monitor at John Martin Junior High for several years. She enjoyed reading, skating, swimming and various crafts. Doris was never at a loss for words and thoroughly enjoyed sharing her life stories with anyone who would lend an ear.
Her fun loving spirit will be fondly remembered and missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her daughter, Susan (Gerrard) Garden, Enfield; sons, Harold, Dartmouth; Robert, Calgary; Michael (Carole), Ostrea Lake; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. MAILMAN, Juanita Belle — 87, of Branch LaHave, Lunenburg Co., passed away August 1, 2009, in North Queen's Nursing Home, Caledonia following a lengthy illness. Born in Springfield, she was the daughter of the late Caleb and Dorothy (Burgoyne) Acker. She is survived by eight of her nine children, daughters, Judy (Milton), Midville Branch; Linda (George), Toronto; Flora (Francis), Halifax; Wanda, Chester; Kathy (Gary), Lunenburg; sons, Vernon (Betty), Kingston; Jim (Diane), Branch LaHave; Larry, Toronto; 16 of her 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sisters, Marie Williams, England; Kathleen Barteaux, Torbrook and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Milton; daughter, Wilma Lee; grandson, Robert; brothers, Calvin and Everett. There will be no visitation by request. Born in Watford, she was a daughter of the late Sanford and Jennie (Silver) Veinot. She was a member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Upper Northfield, and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are her husband, G. VEINOTTE, Otis Gerald - 73, Second Peninsula, Lunenburg County, died April 8, 1994, at home. Born in the Forties, Lunenburg County, he was son of the late Beecher and Clara (Lenihan) Veinotte. In his earlier years, he worked at farming and as a woodsman. Later he worked at National Sea Products, Lunenburg until his retirement. He was a member of St. John's Anglican Church, Lunenburg. He is survived by stepdaughter, Reta (Mrs. Eugene Creaser), Second Peninsula; stepson, Murray Bezanson, Berwick; three sisters, Pauline (Mrs. Bernard Keizer), First South; Beatrice (Mrs. Howard Doherty), Grafton; Edna (Mrs. John Gale), North Sydney; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren. Warden Cecil Tanner, 95, of Lilydale, passed away suddenly December 24, 1991, at Glades Nursing Home, Halifax. Born in Black Rocks, Lunenburg County, he was the step-son of the late James and Sophie Weagle. He was a retired farmer and fisherman, and a member of Zion's Lutheran Church, Lunenburg. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Lorna Hirtle, Bridgewater; a step-son, Kerry Oxner, New York; several grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Bessie Acker; his second wife, Margaret Oxner; three sisters, Lola, Lila, and Margaret; a step-sister, Mary; a son, Levenis; and a step-son, Edward; a step-brother, Reginald. His body rested at Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, Lunenburg. Funeral service was held Saturday, December 28, 1991, with Rev. James Slack officiating. Burial in Martin's Brook Cemetery. She was a daughter of the late Elnora Elizabeth and Gordon Acker. She was born in North River on October 28, 1922. She was a loving mother and grandmother and she was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, North River. She was predeceased by her husband, Stanley; daughter, Helena; son, John; son-in-law, Douglas; sisters, Audrey and Geneva; brother, Aubrey, and great-grandson, Stephen. MITCHELL, J.W. Lauchlin "Lauchie" - 88, died in his home in Berwick on Saturday, August 5, 2006. Born in Brooklyn, Hants Co., on September 3, 1917, he was a son of the late Harvey Frederick Courtney and Anna Isabel Lawrence (Burns) Mitchell. In his early years, Dad worked in lumbering, coal mining and at the steel plant in Trenton. He joined the RCAF in 1942, transferred to regular service at the end of the war, retiring in 1964. He started his second career with the NSLC, becoming manager of the Berwick store in 1973, retiring in 1982. Our Dad was a gentle, kind man who never lost his avid curiosity about life and his love of learning. His grandchildren loved sitting around him, eagerly listening to stories of his childhood and of Nanna and Grandad's life together. He was a member of Berwick United Church, where he was a Steward. He was a member of Valley Lodge No. 90, A.F. & A.M., Berwick, where he recently received his 50 year jewel. He was past president of the Lions Club in Trenton. Lauchie was past president of the Royal Canadian Legion, Ortona Branch No. 69, Berwick. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Donalda Robertson Haggart Mitchell on November 8, 1992; brother, Burns "Bud"; sisters, Velma Forshner and Donelda Fox. He is survived by his brother, Harvey and sisters, Rose (George) Ross, Betty (Leslie) Milne, Rita (Alvin) Sinclair, all of Pictou County; sisters-in-law, Verna Mitchell, Aileen Haggart, Pictou Co.; brothers-in-law, Graeme (Nesta) Haggart, Moncton and Alistair (Wendy) Haggart, Dartmouth. He also leaves behind his very dear friend, Polly Murphy and her family, Berwick; his children, Stuart, Toronto, Ont.; Patricia (Gary) Yule, Kentville; Lynn (Don) Reid, Truro; Lauchie Jr. (Paulette), Yarmouth; Deborah, Hubbards and Allistair (Irene), Hantsport. He is also survived by grandchildren, Sarah (Steven) Westergaard, Bolton, Ont.; Lauchie Mitchell III, Nobleton, Ont.; Alan Yule, Toronto, Ont.; Ian Yule, Kentville; Sarah (Mark Boertjes) Yule, Ottawa, Ont.; Heather (Michael Roach) Yule, Bedford; Gregory Reid, Ottawa, Ont.; Stephen (Tanya) Reid, Miramichi, N.B.; Michael (Emily) Reid, Wolfville; Adam (Shauna) Mitchell, Porters Lake and Benjamin Mitchell, Halifax. His great-granddaughters, Leah Patricia Yule Boertjes, Marin Elizabeth Yule Roach and Alexandra Deborah Mitchell, have been a particular joy to Dad for the past three years. CONRAD, Russell Leon - 91, Springfield, Annapolis Co., passed away in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII, Halifax, on Saturday, May 17, 2008. Born in Hemford, Lunenburg Co., he was a son of the late James Garfield and Flo (Russell) Conrad and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Russell was a veteran of the Second World War, having served with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was very active with his community over the years. He was a founding member of the Springfield Fire Department, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 102, New Germany serving as secretary for a number of years. Russell also worked for his church for many years. He enjoyed bowling, loved to golf and was very passionate when it came to the care of his lawn. He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Veinot); daughter, Karen (Tim) Fisher, Bridgewater; granddaughters, Riley and Brittany; special nephew, Barry, and other numerous nieces and nephews. Russell was predeceased by his sister, Jean Schnare, and brother, Ronald Conrad. There will be no visitation by request. Born in West Northfield, Lunenburg County, she was a daughter of the late Artemus and Mae (Dauphinee) Langille. She was a member of Bridgewater United Church Happy Gang, Bridgewater Seniors Group, and former member of the South Shore Bluegrass Association. She was a homemaker and was employed with Michelin Tire Ltd. for seven to nine years. Surviving are sons, Owen (Suzanne), Lower Branch; Kevin (Engelina), Bridgewater; brother, Carmen (Phyllis) Brantford, Ontario; sisters, Lena Gauthier, Bridgewater; Marguerite (Harry) Russell, West Northfield; grandchildren, Trevor and Rachel, both of Bridgewater; several nieces and nephews. MORTON, Bernard Bruce "Bernie" - 47, Mader's Cove, Lunenburg Co., passed away peacefully on Monday, January 14, 2008, at home with his family at his side, after a lengthy and courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gerhig's disease). Born in Barss Corner, he was a son of Basil Morton, Bridgewater, and the late Lydia (Zinck) Morton. He was well-known as the owner/operator of Bernard Morton Carpentry, whose real passion was the restoration of old homes. Bernie's most recognized project was the restoration of St. John's Lutheran Church in Mahone Bay. Bernie loved animals, from his champion Shepherd show dogs to horses and exotic breeds of cattle, but most of all, his poodle, Sammy, who had been at his side for the past six years. Bernie enjoyed gardening and the time he spent with his family, but most of all, his wife, Karen, who tenderly cared for him throughout his illness, and who herself is afflicted with multiple sclerosis. Bernie is survived by his loving wife, Karen Elizabeth Butt; daughters, Melissa Morton, Bridgewater; Michelle Morton (Richard), Dartmouth; stepchildren, Shauna (Hannes) Babak, Bahamas; Stephen Boehner (Shaina Osbourne), Halifax; grandchildren, Isaac, Caleb, and Alyssa; sister, Diane Morton (Gregory Nauss), Bridgewater; stepbrothers, David (Laverne) Joudrey, Riverport; George (Diane) Joudrey, Barss Corner, and stepsister, Shirley (Harold) Tanner, Middle Sackville. She was employed for many years in the financial industry with the Bank of Montreal, and Eastern Canada Savings & Loan Company and it's successors, at the time of her illness she was employed in the home heat division of Ultramar Canada Ltd. She is survived by her husband, Charles, her mother Mrs. Lucy Harris, Truro; father, Ronald Veinotte, Ontario. She was predeceased by her brother, Lorimer Veinotte. Born in Lower Northfield on February 9, 1932, she was a daughter of the Late Gordon and Beatrice Oickle and stepfather, Wallace Oickle. Surviving are her sons, Ray, Gerald (Joanne), Stewart, Russell (Laurie); brother, Elliotte (Susan); sisters, Frances Mackay (Peggy), Gladys Feener; grandchildren, Chris, Shawn, Corey; great-grandchildren, Christina, Hannah and Olivia; nine nieces and nephews.
