WHYNOT, John Wesley - 92, Mahone Bay, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 16, 2005, with his family by his side, in Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Born in Mahone Bay March 13, 1913, he was a son of the late James and Mary Whynot. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed his life and family to the fullest. John loved to have visits from his family and friends, his home was always open to everyone. He can be remembered for his love of singing and making everyone happy. In his earlier years he was an avid carpenter, fisherman and card player. He was employed at the Halifax Dockyards until his retirement. He lived in Clayton Park, Halifax, until he moved back to Mahone Bay in the year 2001. John is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 68 years, Jean (Spidle); children, Marilyn (Dail) Millett, Maders Cove; Barbara (Graham) Bailly, Sunny Brook, and Jack (Linda) Whynot, Lower Sackville/Maders Cove; grandchildren, Peter (Carol-lee) Millett, Lisa (Jeff) Horne, John (Dawn) Millett, Anne (Tom) Bailly, Kristine (Robert) Burns, Greg (Sheridan) Bailly, Kevin (Hillary) Whynot and Craig Whynot; 13 grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly. He was predeceased by sisters, Alice (Spidle) and Bell Whynot; brother, George. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Highway 3, Lunenburg, where a private family service will be held today, Rev. Lawson Aulenback officiating. Interment will be in Park Cemetery, Mahone Bay. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Fishermen's Memorial Hospital or a charity of your choice. A special thanks to the staff of the 2nd and 3rd floors of Fishermen's Memorial Hospital. Their professionalism and compassion provided great comfort to John and his family.
GATES, Millage C. - 84, The Forties, Lunenburg Co., died October 22, 1995, in Fisherman's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Born in New Ross, Lunenburg Co., he was a son of the late Lindsay and Annie (Bezanson) Gates. He farmed and was a carpenter most of his life and was an adherent of The Forties United Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, Lindsay, Timberlea; daughters, Jean Hiltz, The Forties; Winnifred (Winnie) Forbes, Tatamagouche; five grandchildren; a great-grandson; brothers, Morley, New Ross; Roscoe, Aylesford; sisters, Gladys Hergett, Kingston; Norma Stoddard, Harmony; Evelyn Bourgoyne, Kentville; several nieces and nephews. VEINOT, Merva Gladys - 72, Aylesford, died February 27, 2004, in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Berwick, she was a daughter of the late Freeman and Gladys Lohnes. She worked in several places in Ontario before retiring to Nova Scotia. Surviving are her husband, Raymond; daughter, Kay Veinot, Kingston. She was predeceased by one sister; brother, Malcolm. Vida Autumn Selig Of Colpton, Lunenburg County, passed away peacefully June 3, 2001 in the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Bakers Settlement, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Luella (Bolivar) Mailman. She is survived by daughters, Leverne (Donald) MacKay, Pleasant River; Elaine (Gerald) Robar, Dayspring; Carolyn (Beverly) Veinot, Bakers Settlement; son Douglas (Margaret) Selig, Simpsons Corner; 9 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Randolph (1982); son Keith (1946); daughter Marie (1956); son Glenwood “Butch” (1972); sisters Dorothy, Lois; brothers Roy, Percy and Harris. GATES, Dorothy Evelyn - 83, The Forties, Lunenburg Co., died September 30, 1995, in Rosedale Nursing Home, New Germany. Born in Scarsdale, Lunenburg Co., she was a daughter of the late Manson and Annie (Ramey) Spidle. She was a member of Forties United Baptist Church. In her early years she took an active part in church and community affairs. Surviving are her husband, Millage; son, Lindsay, Timberlea; daughters, Jean Hiltz, The Forties; Winnifred Forbes, Tatamagouche; brothers, Olin, Lunenburg; Beecher, Maders Cove, Lunenburg Co.; sisters, Winnie Luce, Worchester, Mass.; Jean Whynot, Halifax; Beatrice Clarkson, London, Ont.; five grandchildren; a great-grandson; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Lloyd, Duncan; sister, Grace; a granddaughter. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in H.C. Lindsay Memorial Chapel, New Ross. Harold Knox - Family and friends were saddened to learn of the death of Harold Knox, 79, on March 9, 2003 at the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII, following surgery. Born April 5, 1923, he was the son of the late Arthur and Alma (Woodworth) Knox, and lived all of his life in Baker Settlement. Well respected by his peers, Harold began working in the woods at an early age and trucked wood to Bowater Mersey and Canexel, as well as local mills. He was also a Christmas tree producer and worked frequently with the Department of Highways during road construction and also sanded winter roads. Harold enjoyed the privilege of living and took particular delight in Sunday drives and weekends spent at the "camp" on Molega Lake surrounded by family and friends. He was a former member and supporter of the local fire department.
He will be sadly missed by family, including his wife of 58 years, Hazel (Zwicker); daughter Cecilia Kaizer; son Randall and daughter-in-law Brenda (Uhlman); and daughter-in-law Maxine (Walfield); sisters Phyllis Wessell and Greta (Perry) Veinot; grandchildren Melina and Melisa Knox; Renee (Lawrence) Kusik and Stephen Kaizer, Kim (JP) Kennedy, Karen, and Jason (Samantha) Knox; great-grandchildren Darian and Zander Kusik, Olivia Knox, and Bhreagh Kennedy; a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by son Mervyn; son-in-law Dave Kaizer, and sisters Dorothy Knox and Marguerite Crouse.
Memorial service was held at the Bridgewater United Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2003 with Rev. Ivan Norton officiating, assisted by Judith Norton. The church choir was in attendance led by organist Wendy Fraser. Hymns sung were "All Things Bright and Beautiful" and "The Lord's My Shepherd". Ushers were members of the Baker Settlement and District Fire Department - Royce Crouse, Chris Lenahan, Robert Mailman and Ken Norward. The eulogy, "A Life Remembered", was given by granddaughters Kim and Karen. Following the memorial service the firefighters and members of the ladies' auxiliary formed an "honor guard" outside the church. Interment followed at the Baker Settlement Cemetery. Family and friends gathered afterwards at the Baker Settlement Firemen's Centre. Flowers were from the immediate family only.

WHYNOT, Jean Lenore — With sadness we announce the passing of Jean Lenore Whynot, 90, of Mahone Bay on Monday, October 12, 2009, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Parkdale, Jean was the daughter of the late Manson and Annie (Ramey) Spidle. Jean was a stay at home mom and over her lifetime found great fulfillment and joy in the love of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jean's home was a welcome place to visit not only for family but for neighbours and friends. She and her husband, John, lived many years in Halifax before moving to reside in Mahone Bay. She was a member of the United Baptist Church, Mahone Bay. Jean is survived by daughters, Marilyn (Dail) Millett, Mader's Cove; Barbara (Graham) Bailly, Sunny Brook; son, Jack (Linda) Whynot, Mader's Cove; grandchildren, Peter (Carol-lee) Millett, Lisa Horne, John (Dawn) Millett, Anne (Tom) Bailly, Kristine Burns, Greg (Sheridan) Bailly, Kevin (Hillary) Whynot and Craig (Angela) Whynot; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers, Olin Spidle, Lunenburg and Beecher (Jean) Spidle, Mader's Cove. Jean was predeceased by her husband, John Wesley Whynot; sisters, Winnie Luce, Beatrice Clarkson, Grace Ballash and Dorothy Gates; brothers, Duncan Spidle and Lloyd Spidle. Howard Elgin Rafuse, 99, Chester, formerly of New Germany, died Monday, November 12, 1990. Born in Parkdale, Lunenburg County, he was a son of the late Stephen and Mary Cecelia (Foster) Rafuse. He was a member of the United Baptist Church, Barss Corner. He is survived by a daughter, Althea (Mrs.Richard Walton), Maine; a step-son, Leland Wentzell, Maplewood; three grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two wives, Mildred; Mary Frank; a step-daughter, Glennie; a sister, Millie; four brothers, Guy, Ashley, Evan, Richmond; a half-brother, Alonzo. The body is in Langille's Funeral Home, New Germany, visiting 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Emmanuel Baptist Church, Parkdale; burial in Parkdale-Maplewood Cemetery.

VEINOT, Beatrice Estelle — 92, passed away peacefully in North Queens Nursing Home on May 25, 2010. Born in Midville Branch, Lunenburg Co., on December 25, 1917, she was the daughter of the late William and Espah (Veinot) Wile. She enjoyed Lexicon puzzles, reading Catherine Cookson books, knitting wool socks, hooking mats, and the company of her children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. She is survived by daughters, Shirley Spidle (Lawrence deceased), Lorimer Higgins and Christine (Philip) Wigg, their children, Melanie and Kira; sons, Frank (Christine), children, Greville (Cathy), Gregory (Barbara), Stephanie (Blair) Hussey; Barry, children, David (Tammy), Darren (Shelly) and Christie; Charles; Daryl, children, Caitlin, Emma, Jordan; great-grandchildren, Christopher, Dylon, Brooke, Jessica, Taylor, Brogan, Connor and Keisha; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Ronald; sister, Kathleen Hebb; brothers, Stewart, Ralph, Clayton, Richard and Lawrence. In respect of her wishes there will be no funeral, memorial, visitation, or reception. There will be a family burial of ashes and graveside service at a later date. The family would like to express a special thanks to Home Care, Victorian Order of Nurses, staff on 4th floor of South Shore Regional Hospital, and North Queens Nursing Home for their extraordinary care and compassion they gave to their mother and grandmother during her last months and days.
