Cecil Arnold Shaw, Sr. Round Hill, died recently at home. Born in Round Hill, he was the son of the late George and Mary Shaw. He was a veteran of the Second World War. He is survived by three sons, Gordon, Tumbler Ridge, B.C.; Donald, Bridgetown; Cecil Jr., Round Hill; a daughter, Madeline (Mrs. Malcolm Woodland), Moschelle; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Leloa; a son George; seven brothers, John, Max, Rex, George, William, Charles and Lovett; seven sisters, Roxanne, Gladys, Blanche, Luella, Annie, Georgina and Etta. The body rested at Robert L. Hall Funeral Home, Annapolis Royal, from where the funeral was held with Rev. Harold Kye officiating. Burial was in Round Hill Cemetery.

BAKER, Fred Wesley - 80, Margaretsville, died May 22, 1994, at home. Born at Gates Mountain, he was a son of the late John and Menetta (McNayr) Baker. He was a farmer and painter; an avid trapper and hunter and a former member of Margaretsville Volunteer Fire Department. He is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy Spencer; three daughters, Phyllis (Mrs. John Stokvis), East Margaretsville; Hazel Cooper, Halifax; Margaret (Mrs. Robert Smith), New London, Conn.; two sons, Murray, Prince Albert; Daniel, Fort Saskatchewan, Alta.; two sisters, Viola (Mrs. Kenneth Rayfuse), Middleton; Mrs. Edith Spencer, North Middleton; 13 grandchildren. He was predeceased by three sisters, Evangeline, Hazel, Elma; four brothers, Wilfred, Roy, Leslie, Harold. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in Warren T. Roop Funeral Home, Middleton. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Calvary Baptist Church, Meadowvale, Pastor Richard Jones officiating. Burial will be in Church Grove Cemetery, Melvern Square. Donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church or Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton.

HUBLEY, Urban LeRoy - 90, Dartmouth, died September 11, 1996, in Victoria General Hospital. Born in Camperdown, he was a son of the late Richard and Florence Hubley. He was a charter member of the Lutheran Church of Our Saviour, Dartmouth. He received his life membership in the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America for over 50 years service. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, the former Gladys Robar; sisters, Grace Cleversey, Mabel Naugler; brothers, James, George. He was predeceased by sisters, Annie, Hattie; brothers, Moyle, John. Memorial service 11 a.m. Friday in Lutheran Church of Our Saviour, Dartmouth, Rev. Jim Anderson officiating. Burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Lower Sackville. Donations to Lutheran Church of Our Saviour, Dartmouth. Arrangements entrusted to A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, Dartmouth.

EISNER, Etta Florence - 93, of Lawrencetown, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at home. She was born in Young's Cove, to the late Richard and Zaidee (Guest) Sarty. Etta was a member of Lawrencetown United Baptist Church, teaching Sunday School for over 30 years, being a founding member of the Ladies Auxiliary; convener of the Baptismal Committee, which she found most gratifying, along with many other committees. She was a former Past Noble Grand of Autumn Leaf Rebekah Lodge, Bridgetown, member of Valley Rose Rebekah Lodge, Lawrencetown and a member of the New Horizons Seniors Club. Etta enjoyed painting, crafts, bowling, playing cards and walking, but her passion was creating beautiful flower gardens. Etta was a "people person" and her home was a home away from home to many, over the years to whom she was a mother and friend to all who came. She enjoyed family life with her late husband, Raleigh, to whom she was married 68 years and daughters, Marilyn (Lyman) Huskins, Milton, Queens Co.; Lois (Garry) Lupkoski, Comox, B.C.; Joan (John) Clarke, Pictou Landing; grandchildren, Patricia Isnor, Larry Huskins, Tracy Kerr, Christa Clarke, Selena Lupkoski and Rebecca Martell; great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Isnor and Vivian Huskins, and step great-grandchild, Kael Kerr. She was predeceased by her husband, Raleigh Eisner; five sisters and six brothers. Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. Saturday, April 18, in Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448, where Valley Rose Rebekah Lodge No. 126 will conduct their service beginning at 7 p.m. A celebration of Etta's life will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, April 19, in Lawrencetown United Baptist Church, Rev. John Beers officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Bridgetown. Donations in memory may be made to Lawrencetown United Baptist Church or to a charity of choice.

SPINNEY, Lillian Bernice - 80, Kingston, died March 31, 1996, in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Albany, she was a daughter of the late Leon and Annie (Medicraft) Veinot. She was a member of Evangeline Rebekah Lodge 32. Surviving are sons, Robert McGill, Nictaux South; Frank McGill, Halifax; sister, Vivian, Kingston; brother, Garnet, Albany; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her husband, Milton; daughter, Helen; brothers, Robert, Clyde, Garfield. Visitation 7-9 p.m. tonight in Warren T. Roop Funeral Home, Middleton. Funeral 2 p.m. Wednesday in Kingston United Baptist Church, Dr. John Bartol officiating. Burial in Pine Grove Cemetery, New Albany. Donations to Evangeline Rebekah Lodge 32, Kingston United Baptist Church or any charity.

Edna Juanita Langille - Langille, Edna Juanita, passed away at home in Blockhouse on Monday, June 5, 2006 in her 92nd year. Born in Fauxburg, December 25, 1914, she was the last surviving member of the family of Charlotte (Veinotte) Spidell and John Spidell. She was a member of St. James Anglican Church, Mahone Bay. She had taught Sunday school in Blockhouse for 22 years. She also was a member of the Blockhouse ACW, Blockhouse Women's Institute and the Golden Years Seniors Group. Being a graduate of Normal College, Truro (class of 1934), she taught in various schools throughout Lunenburg County. Edna enjoyed working in her gardens, watching the birds and cooking and baking for her family and friends. She was predeceased in 2004 by her husband of 63 years, Selwyn Langille, and also by brothers (Freida) and Ross Spidell; sisters Emily Spidell, Lola (Millard) Hill, Erna (William) Cook, and Grace (Frank) Eisnor. She is survived by her two daughters, Linda Langille, Bridgewater; Margot Lutes and her husband, Michael, Blockhouse. Visitation took place at the Mahone Funeral Home, Mahone Bay on Wednesday evening, June 7. Memorial service was held Thursday, June 8 in St. James Anglican Church, Mahone Bay with Father Ian Wissler officiating. The committal service took place in Old Blockhouse Cemetery but due to inclement weather, was delayed until Monday, June 12. Floral tributes: Urn wreath - daughter Margot and Michael; Vase of flowers - daughter Linda; Potted plant - friend Helen Ernst and Eugenie; Heart - friend Connie Lutes; Single rose - daughter Margot. Memorial donations were made to Blockhouse Fire Department, St. James Anglican Church, Fishermen's Memorial Hospital and the Garden of Rest Amalgamated Cemeteries.

ROBAR, Nelson James — 74, of Hebbville, formally of Conquerall Bank, and Blockhouse, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2010 in the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater surrounded by his loved ones after a long and courageous ill­ness. Born in North River on July 19, 1936, he was a son of the late Edwin and Amy (Daniels) Robar. Nelson was known for cooking large meals which stemmed from his younger years while working as a cook with Bowater Mersey in the logging camps. Before retirement Nelson became a skilled carpenter which many people ad­mired, and enjoyed his woodwork. He also enjoyed fishing with his partner Gladys, also hunting with his many friends, and brothers. Nelson was a member of the Rod and Gun Club. Nelson is survived by his companion and best friend, Gladys (Feener) who cared for him endlessly throughout his long stay in hospital. Sons, Arleigh (Shirley), Middle LaHave; Marshall (Nancy), Bridgewater; sisters, Marion (Martin) Uhlman, Westville, Queens Co.; Monica (Charles) Zinck, Chicago, IL., Joan (Guy) Sproule, Springfield; Lila Sproule (Freamond) Dennis, Judy (Paul) Robar, both from North River. Brothers, Vincent (Sylvia), North Riv­er, Bernie (Heather) Oakhill, Delbert (Gloria), Springfield. Many grandchil­dren and great-grandchildren, sever­al nieces and nephews. He was prede­ceased by his wife Maxine (Eichel), brother, Luther, and daughter-in-law, Janice McLachlan. The family would like to give a special thank you to the nurses and staff of the medical floor and the palliative care unit of the South Shore Regional Hospital for their support and care for Nelson dur­ing his stay. Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 31 from 7-9 p.m. in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewa­ter. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Bridgewater, Pastor Paul Jensen officiating. Burial will follow in Garden of Rest Cemetery, Block­house. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to South Shore Regional Hospital Palliative Care Unit, Canadian Cancer Society, and The Lunenburg Co. Chapter of the S.P.C.A, or charity of choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewa­ter.

JOUDREY, Joyce Marie - 63, Blockhouse, Lunenburg Co., died December 14, 1996, in Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Born in Fauxburg, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Harriet (Morash) Slauenwhite. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Mahone Bay. She held the position of sexton in St. James Anglican Church, Mahone Bay, for 12 years. Surviving are her husband, Howard Anderson Joudrey; daughters, Joan Rogers, Bridgewater; son, Michael, Berwick, Kings Co.; twin sister, June Veinotte, Clearland; sisters, Sylvia Zinck, Northwest; Doris (Mrs. Gordon Lohnes), Northfield; Phyllis (Mrs. Gordon Tanner), Stonehurst; Emma (Mrs. Douglas Kaizer), Bayport; brothers, Philip, Blockhouse; Ronald, Fauxburg; Stephen, Bridgewater. She was predeceased by an infant son; brothers, Earl, Murray. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in Mahone Funeral Home, Mahone Bay. Funeral 1 p.m. Wednesday in St. John's Lutheran Church, Rev. George Wawin officiating, Rev. Linda Macdonald assisting. Burial in Old Blockhouse Cemetery, Blockhouse. Donations to St. John's Lutheran Church, St. James Anglican Church or Canadian Cancer Society.

VEINOT, Emma Amanda - 92, New Albany, died March 22, 1996, in Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown. Born in Bridgetown, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Gillis) Gates. She was a member of New Albany United Church. Surviving are daughter, Agnes (Mrs. Harold Robar), Torbrook; sons, Ronald, Springfield; Raymond, Halifax; Vernon, New Albany; 17 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Clyde Sr.; infant daughter, Bessie; brother, Willis; sisters, Susie, Lettie; half-brothers, Arch, Guilford; half-sisters, Belle, Millie, Annie, Maggie; grandsons, Stanley, Murray. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today, funeral 2 p.m. Sunday, both in Warren T. Roop Funeral Home, Middleton, Rev. Dr. William MacDougall officiating. Burial in Pine Grove Cemetery, New Albany.

SHAW, Joan Elizabeth - 69, Upper Granville, Annapolis Co., passed away Thursday, September 21, 2006, in Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown. Born in Upper Granville, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Leta (Poole) Phinney. Joan loved curling. She is survived by daughters, Diane Shaw (Claude Arsenault), Montreal, Que.; Shelly Shaw (Lary Babcock), Edmonton, Alta.; son, Tony (Debbie), Trenton, Ont.; grandchildren, Amy, Coralea, Alexi, Samuel, Mia; and great-grandchildren, Jadden, Tucker; brothers, Carl (Linda), Upper Granville; Robert (Lynn), California; sisters, Gertrude Graves, California; Phyllis (Robert) Larson, San Francisco, Calif.; Evelyn Henderson, Bridgetown; Barbara (Andy) Cress, Olds, Alta.; Sandra (Colin) Laing, Calgary, Alta. She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon; and sister, Marion. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Kaulbach Family Funeral Home, Bridgetown. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Gordon Providence United Church, Bridgetown, with Rev. Marlyne Myles officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Bridgetown. JOHNSON, Lailah Muriel - 85, Chester Grant, Lunenburg Co., died August 25, 2004, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater, surrounded by her family. Born in Gold River, she was a daughter of the late Elijah and Lottie (Pennell) Kaizer. Lailah is survived by her daughters, Pat (Donald) Mingo, Gold River; Linda (Vernon) Hatt, Chester Basin; Muriel (Eddie) Carver and Melvina Hynick, both of Bridgewater; sons, William (Ann Marie), Beech Hill; Clyde (Nancy), Chester Grant; Kenny Kaizer, Alberta; Kerry Kaizer, Ontario; sisters, Mary Peters, Bridgewater; Myrtle Wilneff, Black Point; brothers, Clem, Michael, both of Gold River; Bob, Ontario; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, William; daughter, Frances Irene Lantz; son, David Kaizer; brothers, Ainsley, Melburne, Maynard, Basil, James, Clarence and one in infancy; sisters, Stella, Merle, Hazel, Kathleen and one in infancy. No visitation by request. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 31, in St. John's Anglican Church Cemetery, Borgald's Point Road, Chester Basin with Canon Duanne Tanswell officiating. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shoreham Village Bus Fund or St. Mary's Anglican Church. Arrangements entrusted to Davis Funeral Home, Chester.

TAYLOR, Lyle Herbert "Herbie" - 76, Bridgetown, passed away suddenly on December 19, 2007, at home. Born in Arlington, Annapolis Co., he was a son of the late John and Susan (Sabean) Taylor. In his younger years, he was a hardworking woodsman. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Herbie was a great father. He is survived by wife, Twila May (Zavitz); sons, Todd (Patty), Beaconsfield; Dennis (Rose), Paradise; Marven (Heidi), Bridgetown; daughters, Shirley (Robert) Daigle, Paradise and Rose Taylor, Bridgetown; 18 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, Gerald (Helen), Belleisle; sister, Ethel Durling, Bridgetown. He was predeceased by brothers, Ansel, Robert, Leverett, Ralph, Frank, Douglas, George, Ernest and Elgie; sisters, Marjorie, Adelaine, Shirley, Frances, Pearl and Ester. Visitation will be held Saturday from 7-9 p.m. in Kaulbach Family Funeral Home, Bridgetown. Funeral Service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, December 23, in Bridgetown Baptist Church with Rev. George Neily officiating. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Bridgetown. Donations in memory may be made to Riverside Cemetery, Bridgetown.

JODREY, Velma Blanche - 71, New Minas, formerly of Gaspereau, Kings County, died December 31, 1992, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in South Alton, Kings County, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Violet (Levy) Jodrey. She lived most of her life in Gaspereau and was a graduate of Wolfville High School. She was employed with Wolfville Post Office for over 40 years, retiring in 1984. She is survived by a son, Clarke, New Minas; two sisters, Grace (Mrs. Frank Conrad), Wolfville; Irene (Mrs. Lester Collins), Harmony, Kings County; two grandsons; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Wendell, Wilson, Russell; sister, Nina Mae. The body is in H.C. Lindsay Memorial Chapel, Wolfville, visiting 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today. Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Gaspereau Baptist Church, Rev. Paul Goetz and Rev. Gary Manthorne officiating. Burial will be in Greenfield Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to Nova Scotia Lung Association or Valley Regional Hospital.
