Audrey Marion Farrow
(September 8, 1927 - September 14, 2011)
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Audrey Marion Farrow age 84, of Amherst announce her passing on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at the Moncton Hospital.
Born in Amherst, Audrey was the eldest daughter of the late Nathan and Mary (LeBlanc) Cormier.
Audrey’s family was her main focus and her world revolved around them and had a true love for children.
She was a devote Roman Catholic whose favourite day was Sunday which was important to her for church and family time.
Being the oldest, Audrey was the family matriarch, caring for many of her brothers and sisters from an early age.
She was a loving wife to her husband Fred of 61 years and together had three sons Tommie (Annie) of Athabasca, Alberta, and their children Jennifer, Courtney and Megan; Ronnie (Crystal) of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and their children John, Jessica and Febra; and David (Catharine) of Sudbury, Ontario, and their son Wilson and five great grandchildren.
Audrey also is survived by one sister Eleanor (Roger) Arseneau of Truro, two brothers Lawrence (Palm) of Amherst and Gerry (Martha) of Amherst and many, many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by sisters Jean Estabrooks and Deanna MacLeod and brothers Ronnie, Raymond, Roy, Dougie, Leon and Joseph.
Audrey’s love of life and great sense of humour will be missed by all.
Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with parish prayers at 8 p.m. all in Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (667-9906).
Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, September 19, 2011 at 10 a.m. from Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Amherst with Father Vernon Driscoll officiating.
Interment will take place in St. Charles-Nativity Cemetery, Amherst.
Memorial donations in Audrey’s memory may be made to Victoria’s Quilts Canada, Tantramar Branch or the Canadian Cancer Society.
Rick (David) Douglas
(Died September 9, 2011)
LCDR. (RET’D) David (Rick) Richard Douglas: Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of life of the late Rick Douglas, who passed away Friday evening, September 9, 2011 following a courageous battle with cancer.
Rick was born on April 8, 1949 in Peterborough, Ontario, where he completed his Elementary and High School education.
He was then accepted into the Royal Military College, in Kingston, Ontario where he graduated with a BA (History) in 1972.
During the annual Athletic Awards Dinner held that year at R.M.C.
Rick received the rare honour of being presented with both the Tommy Smart Cup, awarded to the best all-round athlete and the Prince of Wales Cup awarded to the best all-round Cadet.
It was the 2nd time in the past 20 years in which a R.M.C. Cadet had taken both trophies.
Prior to commencing his military career, Rick competed in the 1972 Canadian National Swimming Championships, which were the trials for the Canadian Olympic Swimming Team and the National Water-polo Team.
From 1972 until 1980 Rick served as a Maritime Surface Operations Officer at sea in the Canadian Navy, with his final posting at sea as Operations Officer of HMCS Assiniboine.
In 1980, Rick was the first Naval Officer assigned to the Canadian Forces group of Intelligence Officers.
This was fascinating work, which took him and Carolyn across Canada, as well as three year postings in Washington DC, and London, UK.
Upon retirement in 1999, Rick and Carolyn moved to Amherst, Nova Scotia and built their retirement home.
During the years Rick lived in Amherst, he was Treasurer and then President of the Amherst Curling Club.
He served on the Boards of the Amherst Golf Club, and the National Association of Federal Retirees Cumberland Branch FSNA NS #78.
Most important to him was his time on the Board of the Cumberland Health Authority (CHA).
This led to his selection as the CHA representative on the Board of the Health Authority Nova Scotia (HANS).
Rick saw these volunteer activities as his contribution to the community that was now his home.
Rick was also a member of the Clan Douglas Society of North America and the Royal Military Club of Canada.
In summer Rick enjoyed his weekly golf game with friends, and often helped at various tournaments, including the annual fundraiser for?our hospital foundation.
In winter you could find him at the curling rink. Rick enjoyed reading, gardening, and doing research on his family tree.
He especially cherished his workshop at the shore, and spent many hours working on various projects.
He enjoyed helping others, and meeting new people.
Rick will be missed by the organizations where he contributed his talents and by the many friends he made here and in his travels.
Rick is survived by Carolyn (Kelly), his wife of 35 years; his parents Marjorie and Donald Douglas, now residents of Amherst; brother Stephen (Mi-Sook), Toronto, Ontario; Brothers-in-law Robert(Janet) Arseneau and Harold Arseneau, Springhill, N.S. and Sisters-in-law, Loretta (Griff) Griffith, Kingston Ont. and Margaret (George) Beaton, Debert, N.S. as well as his loving Aunts Dorothy Hubbs, Aurora, Ontario; Betty Cyr, Montreal, Quebec; and Anne (Harold) Taylor, Burlington, Ontario; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Rick was predeceased by his sister, Barbara Ann.
There will be visitation at Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (667-9906) on Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., September 13, 2011.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m., September 14, 2011 at the Trinity-St. Stephens United Church.
His ashes are to be scattered in the Northumberland Strait, near his cottage at a later date.
Donations in Rick’s memory may be made to the Cumberland Health Care Foundation or The Cumberland County Hospice/Palliative Care Society.
Lorne Layton Dernier
(July 2, 1924 - September 1, 2011)
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Lorne Layton Dernier age 87, of Fort Lawrence, Cumberland County announce his passing on Thursday, September 1, 2011 in Moncton Hospital.
Born in Fort Lawrence, he was a son of the late Lorne and Emma (Chapman) Dernier.
Lorne worked at Enheat in Amherst for 30 years and later was employed with General Homes, Amherst until his retirement.
He was a very devoted member of Trinity-St. Stephen’s United Church, Amherst where he served on numerous committees.
He was a former member of the Alexandra Lodge # 87, Amherst.
Lorne will be sadly missed by his wife the former Betty Doncaster, three daughters Donna Clarke and Marjorie (Dana) Steeves both of Charlottetown, PEI and Nancy (Greg) Bembridge of Ottawa, ON two grandchildren Andrew (Cherisse) Clarke of Dartmouth and Jennifer Clarke of Halifax, one great granddaughter Gabriella Clarke and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Lorne was predeceased by brothers Colin and Donald.
Memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 3, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst. (667-9906) with Rev. Susan Estabrooks officiating.

Lilla (Polly) Pauline Lamy
(May 29, 1914 - October 1, 2011)
It is with great sadness that the family of Lilla Pauline (Polly) Lamy announces her death on October 1st 2011 in her 97th year.
Polly was born in Amherst; she was the daughter of the late George and Georgie (MacNeil) Hill.
She was predeceased by her husband A.R. (Rob) Lamy and her daughter Sandra Joyce Latta.
Polly received a BA from Mount Allison University in 1936 and continued as a life long learner auditing courses from Mount Allison during most of her senior years.
Throughout her life she was a member of numerous service organizations notably the IODE and the Hospital Auxiliary.
An avid lover of the outdoors Polly loved to garden, bird watch and especially play golf.
Along with her husband Rob, Polly spent over 50 years playing golf at the Amherst golf course.
Together they were instrumental in the expansion of the golf course from 9 to 18 holes.
She possessed a passion for music, and enjoyed playing the piano for most of her life.
Polly felt it was important to take time to admire her surroundings, often reminding others to take the time to appreciate.
Many will remember Polly for her kind and gentle spirit, and her true appreciation of life.
Her loss will be felt by her daughters Barbara Jean VanSnick, Tidnish; and Eleanor Ann (Bob) Nahrgang, Charlottetown; 8 grandchildren Rick (Jennifer) VanSnick, Ryan VanSnick, Chris (Heather) Latta, Robin (Gillian) Latta, Aaron (Beverly) Latta, Al (Barb) Nahrgang, Pollyann Nahrgang; Mary Jane (Andrew) MacKinnon; and her several great grandchildren.
She will be dearly missed by her 3 nephews in California Paul (Jan); Vernon (Diane) and Eric Munson.
Visitation will be held on Monday from 2-4 p.m. in Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst, (6679906).
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at 2 p.m. in Christ Church, Amherst with The Rev. Charlotte Ross officiating.
Interment will take place in the Amherst Cemetery.
