Marjorie (Tutty) Douglas
(August 7, 1922 - September 28, 2011)
The death of Marjorie Elma (Tutty) Douglas, 89, Amherst and formerly of Peterborough, Ontario occurred on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at Gables Lodge in Amherst.
Born in Peterborough, Ontario, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Dorothy (Mather) Boyle.
On August 14, 1943 Marjorie married her high school sweetheart, Donald and they spent a wonderful 68 years together.
In her younger years, Marjorie was a member of the Women Bridge Club, Liftlock Golf Club and the YWCA, where she enjoyed swimming and diving.
In 2005 Marjorie and her husband moved to Amherst to be closer to their son the late Rick and his wife Carolyn.
Marjorie was a member of the Northminister United Church in Peterborough, Ontario.
Tutty’s gentle demeanor and pleasant manner will be dearly missed by all that knew her.
She leaves behind to mourn her beloved husband of 68 years, Donald, Amherst; loving son, Stephen (Mi-Sook), Toronto; dear sisters, Dorothy Hubbs, Aurora, ON, Bette Cyr, Montreal PQ, and Anne (Harold) Taylor, Burlington, ON; grandsons, Kyle Troy and Quin Rhys; daughter in law, Carolyn Douglas; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Marjorie was predeceased by her daughter, Barbara Diane in 1948; as well as her son, David (Rick) in 2011.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Campbell’s Funeral Home, Amherst, NS (667-9906).
A private family gathering will be held.
Her cremated remains will be laid to rest beside her daughter in the Little Lake Cemetery in Peterborough at a later date.
Donations in Marjorie’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or the Canadian Cancer Society.
Ellen Margaret White
(May 9, 1940 - August 9, 2011)
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Ellen Margaret White age 71 of Amherst and formerly of River Hebert announce her passing on Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at Gables Lodge, Amherst, NS.
Born in River Hebert, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Catherine “Katie” (Edwards) Burbine.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed spending time with her family.
Ellen enjoyed a good joke and listening to country music.
Ellen is survived by her children, Roger (Chrystal) White of Fort Lawrence, Anita (John) Smith of Tidnish, Virginia (Donald) Pedersen of Alberta and Anthony of Hamilton, ON; two brothers, Bill (Jean) Burbine of Joggins and Eric (Brenda) Burbine of Amherst; five grandchildren, Natasha, Devin, Abby, Elaine and Abrey and one great granddaughter Alexis.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Emerson “Sonny” and one infant sister Kristina and also by her husband Reg.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 7-9 p.m. and Friday from 7-9 p.m. with parish prayers at 8 p.m. all in Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (667-9906).
Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, August 13, 2011 at 10 a.m. from Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Amherst with Father Vernon Driscoll officiating.
Interment will take place in the Ragged Reef Cemetery, Joggins.
Memorial donations in Ellen’s memory may be made to the Cumberland VON or the Arthritis Society.
Kenneth Andrew Crowley
(October 11, 1952 - September 8, 2011)
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Kenneth Andrew Crowley age 58, of Amherst announce his passing at home.
Born in Amherst, Ken was the son of the late Maurice and Bertha (Seaman) Crowley.
After high school, he enrolled in the Air Force in Ontario for a few years.
He returned to Amherst and worked for Hurst Equipment before starting his lifelong career in the life Insurance business following his father’s footsteps with Mutual Life of Canada.
In his retirement years Ken was an aspiring stand up comic and always had a joke for everyone he met.
Ken had an uncanny ear for music and had a great passion for dancing, he also loved singing and playing his guitar and piano for others.
He was a very caring person and was always looking out for his family, friends and neighbours.
Ken had a great love for animals, volunteering time at the L.A. Animal Shelter and developed a special bond with his dog Spirit that he adopted from the shelter who became his greatest companion.
Over the past seven years, Ken acquired a great love for motorcycling and could be seen touring around town and the back roads of Cumberland County.
He will be sadly missed by his two sons Brad of Amherst and Matt (Nicole) of Halifax, one sister Eleanor (Dan) Jolly of Amherst, niece Erin (Ray) Perry of Amherst and nephew Nick of Amherst.
Visitation will be held on Monday, September 12, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (667-9906).
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Amherst with Rev. Byron Corkum officiating.
Interment will follow in the St. Charles-Nativity Cemetery, Amherst.
Memorial donations in Ken’s memory may be made to the L.A. Animal Shelter or the charity of your choice.
Jennie B. Ripley
(March 28, 1908 - October 2, 2011)
Jennie Bell Ripley age 103 passed away on Sunday, October 2nd, 2011 at Gables Lodge in Amherst.
She was born on March 28th, 1908 in Sackville, NB and was a daughter of the late William and Myrtle (Estabrooks) Napper.
Jennie was a member of Trinity - St. Stephen’s United Church as well as a past member of the JOY Club.
Over the years Jennie, along with her husband raised Labrador Retrievers and attended numerous dog shows and belonged to the Kennel Club.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Jennie was a wonderful mother and will be dearly missed by her son, Raymond (Carolyn) and daughter, Joyce Crawford both of Amherst; five grandchildren, Stephen, Gordon, Karen, Alan, and Lynn; six great grandchildren, Jonathan, Justin, Kiley, Johnny Ray, Julie and Jennie; as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family.
She was predeceased by her husband, John; two brothers, Fred LeRose and Jimmy Napper.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date in the Amherst Cemetery, where Jennie will be laid to rest beside her husband.
In lieu of flowers donations in Jennie’s memory may be made to the Cumberland VON.

Mrs. Margaret Morrison Holmes
November 8, 1919 - July 19, 2007
HOLMES, Margaret Morrison - 87, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2007.
Born in Halifax on November 8, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Ruby Wyatt.
She was a long-standing member of St. James United Church in Dartmouth and a great supporter of the Kiwanis Golden "K" Club in Dartmouth. Margaret had a very successful career for many years with Pitney Bowes.
Aside from her career, Margaret's passions were her home, gardening and bridge.
Margaret and her late husband, Sherman, enjoyed traveling, and in particular, their trip to New Zealand.
She is survived by nephews, James Russell, (Linda), Richard Russell (Elaine), Glenn Holmes (Rae); nieces, Marsha Holmes, Marylin Smith, Margaret Kingsley (Nigel); brother-in-law, Arthur Holmes; great-nieces, Susan Russell McGrath, Kathy Russell, Heather Hughes, Kimberly Russell, Laura Russell, and great-nephew, Graeme Smith.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth.
A memorial service will take place on Monday, July 23, at 10 a.m. in St. James United Church, Portland Street, Dartmouth, Rev. Glenn MacLean officiating. Reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations made be made to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or a charity of your choice.
