Mr. Philip James Cable

CABLE, Philip James - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Philip James Cable, age 59, Lower Sackville, on June 7, 2007, in the VG Site, QEII, following a courageous battle with emphysema, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Fred and Pearl (Flemming) Cable.
Philip is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Pat (Tattrie); daughters, Shawna (Adam), Lower Sackville; Sheri (Daryl) Gerrard, Lake Charlotte; son, Philip Terrance, Lower Sackville.
He has left five beautiful grandsons, Justin, Bryson, Riley, Connor and Jacob.
Phil has two surviving brothers, Paul (Connie), West Paradise; David, Halifax; six sisters, Clare (Jim) Spicer, Whitby, Ont.; Mary (Tom) Pottie, Halifax; Anne Marie (Lloyd) Brewer, Dartmouth; Judy (Claude) Chouinard, Cole Harbour; Madeleine de la Mothe, Halifax, and Angela Archer, Shelburne; sisters-in-law, Mary Lou (Bob) Clarke and Catherine Cable; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Philip took great pride in his involvement with the COPD Organization and was instrumental in the formation of COPD Canada website.
His alternate breathing technique helped many fellow COPD sufferers and his words of wisdom with respect to this disease touched many worldwide.
He was predeceased by brothers, Fred and Donald; sister, Doreen (Peter) Ronayne.
Visitation will be held 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Saturday, June 9, and Sunday, June 10, in Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Dr.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, June 11, in St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church, Lower Sackville. Reception to follow in the church hall.
Burial at a later date in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
Family flowers only. Donations in Philip's memory man be made to the Lung Association of Nova Scotia.

Mr. Richard John Byrne
November 15, 1929 - January 7, 2007
BYRNE, Richard John - 77, Halifax, musician, songwriter, passed away Sunday, January 7, 2007, in the VG Site, QEII.
As per the family's request, under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Homes, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax, cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, January 11, in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Richard's memory to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Mrs. Amy Botsford Baker
June 13, 1917 - July 28, 2007
Amy Botsford Baker age 90, of Upper Nappan, Cumberland County passed away Saturday, July 28, 2007 at Cumberland Regional Health Care Center, Upper Nappan, N.S., surrounded by her family.
Born in Moncton, N.B., she was a daughter of the late Gordon and Pansy (Hilson) Lund and was a direct descendant of the MacLeod – Lund clan from Pictou County.
She grew up in Sackville, N.B. and later moved to Amherst and then to Shinimicas Bridge where she lived on a farm for many years.
Amy worked at the Metropolitan Store and Speedy Propane in Amherst for many years.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Amherst and taught sunday school at Highland Baptist Church where she was superintendent and worked very closely with one of her special friends Pearl Maltby.
Amy graduated from the Amherst Academy in 1935 and later tutored many children in the Amherst area.
She was an outstanding pitcher for the Amherst Red Wings softball team and was inducted into the Amherst Hall of Fame.
Amy had a passion for baking, gardening, music, dancing and singing and worked very hard all of her life and still always maintained her sense of humour.
She was a devoted loving mother, grandmother, great and great great grandmother.
Amy is survived by five daughters Helen (Gerald) Read, Judy Baker (Bob Smith) and Gloria (Doug) Cormier all of Upper Nappan, Theresa Jones of Amherst and Beverly Baker of Shinimicas Bridge, five sons Ralph "Bud" (Dale) of Intervale, N.B., Robert "Bob" (Raylene) of Nappan, Doug (June) of Grafton, N.B., Bill (Jean) of Greenville and George (Ann) of Amherst, two sisters Jessie (Eldred) Everill of Amherst and Jennie (Lawrence) Coy of Fredericton, N.B., many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by sisters Emily Strathearn and Dorcas Ison and brothers Herman and John.
Visitation will be held on Monday from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst. (667-9906)
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 at 10 a.m. from First Baptist Church, Amherst with Rev. Morley Bentley and Rev. Donald Miller officiating.
Interment will take place in the Amherst Cemetery.

Mr. Helmut "John" Albrecht
October 9, 1935 - July 24, 2007
ALBRECHT, Helmut "John" - 71, Dartmouth, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 24, 2007, in Dartmouth General Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Born October 9, 1935, in Germany, he immigrated to Canada in 1957 and made his home in Dartmouth.
John and his wife, Gisela, owned and operated "The Submarine" on Inglis Street in Halifax since it was established in 1975.
He spent many tireless hours at "the shop", working daily right until the time of his death. He was an avid coin collector and member of the Halifax Coin Club.
He especially enjoyed traveling down south and most recently enjoyed a family trip to Mexico in March with his beloved grandchildren.
John is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, the former Gisela Bahr; daughter, Veronika (David) Harris, Cole Harbour; son, Christian (Christine), Three Fathom Harbour; grandchildren, Nikole and Nikolas, Matthew and Jordan, who affectionately called him Opi; brother, Kurt (Eve), Germany; many other relatives in Germany.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, where John's family invites you to share in a celebration of his life from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in Atlantic Funeral Home Family Reception Centre.

MacVICAR (Stewart), Bessie - 1916-2007. The family of Bessie MacVicar, with gratitude for her life lived and love shared, wishes to inform that her death took place on Friday, August 3, 2007, at her home in Halifax, following a number of years of failing health.
Born in Mount Stewart, P.E.I., a daughter of Jessie Ruth Toombs and Benjamin H. Stewart, she grew up in Georgetown, P.E.I.
She was predeceased by her parents, brother John in infancy, and sister, Irene (Bob) Hobbs.
She is survived by Rev. Edward, her husband of 69 years; son, Stewart (Betty), Ottawa; daughter, Rev. Diane MacVicar, Halifax; grandchildren, Jeffery, Andrew (Maureen), Amy (Hamilton) Humenny, all of Ottawa; five great-grandchildren; special niece, Ella Andrews, Dartmouth; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was a member of the United Church of Canada, a charter member and life member of the United Church Women and actively participated, formally and informally in congregations served by her husband in Quebec, Ontario and the Maritimes.
She and her husband lived 25 of their retirement years in Riverview, N.B., before moving to Halifax in 2002.
Our thanks to members of the medical profession and all others who contributed to her comfort and well-being.

A service of celebration and thanksgiving will be held Wednesday, August 8, at 2 p.m. in Edgewood-Oxford United Church, 3055 Connaught Ave., with a reception to follow in the church.

Mr. John William "Big Bill" McKenzie

John William "Big Bill" McKenzie
81, New Waterford
John William "Big Bill" McKenzie of New Waterford, passed away on Monday, August 6th, 2007 at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late John A. & Monica (Dwyer) McKenzie.
Bill was a member of the former parish of Mount Carmel, where he served as an usher for fifty-five years.
He was a hard working coal miner who retired from Lingan Colliery in 1987 after forty-five years of service.
Bill was a member of the New Waterford Pensioners Club and a former member of the Strand Committee.
He was described as, "A Gentle Giant", easy going and a true gentleman.
Bill loved to read, watch his favorite baseball team, The Blue Jays, hang out at Hanks Garage or go up to Davis Square and chat with his buddies.
In earlier years, Bill would travel to Antigonish to go on retreat, then later go out to Gardiner Mines with the Friars of the Atonement to enhance his spiritual life.
These retreats would always give Bill a great deal of pleasure and satisfaction during his life.
In his final days, the last rites, given to him by Fr. Dan McDonald were of great purpose and meaning to him.Bill's greatest gifts were the love he gave and received from his family and grandchildren, the foundation of his life.
He had a special place in his heart for his granddaughter Danielle.
Bill is survived by his wife of sixty one years, the former Christena McLeod, three daughters, Theresa McNeil, Ontario, Monica Pickrem (Clifford), Porter's Lake, Willena Talbot (Philip), Hammonds Plains and one son, Blair McKenzie(Glenda) of Port Hawksbury.
Also surviving are one sister, Theresa Rutledge in New Waterford, six grandchildren, Bernice, William, Vincent, Adrian, Pamela, Danielle and six great grandchildren, Brianna, McKenzie, Bailey, Eric, Jared and Landon as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Bill was predeceased by one son, William Joseph "Brother Adrian", O.S.A, grandson Bernard McNeil, two brothers, Ambrose and Allan and one sister Catherine Coady.
Visitation hours are on Thursday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m.
The funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday 11 a.m. in the parish of St. Leonard, Mt. Carmel Church.
Interment will be held in the parish cemetery followed by a reception at the Carmel Center.
Family flowers only.

With treasured memories, the family of Allie O’Handley wish to announce his passing.
Allie passed away peacefully on Monday, August 6, 2007 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay he was the son of Clara (Bennett) and the late John O’Handley. Allie was a former member of Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport.
Allie was a resident of Port Morien for the past few years.
He was an avid drawer/sketcher.
He enjoyed music and loved the ocean.
He will be sadly missed by his loving mother, Clara, brothers, Henry (Carolyn), B.C., Cal, Alberta, sisters, Bev (Neil) Matheson, B.C., Elaine (Mal) Campbell. Mass., Helen Perez, Bridgeport, Lena (Roger) Poulin, Mineville, Cathy (Ron) MacIntyre, Dominion, Rita (Lorne) MacPherson, Bridgeport, Clara (Keith) Wadman, Glace Bay, several nieces and nephews.
Allie will also be sadly missed by best friends, Sandy, Patricia, Kevin and Donna.
Besides his father, he was predeceased by his brothers, Jack and Tom.
Visitation for Allie O’Handley will be held Wednesday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay.
Funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Thursday at Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport with Fr. Gerald Campbell officiating.
Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

Mr. Gerard Joseph "Gerry" Parent

PARENT, Gerard Joseph "Gerry" - 84, Dartmouth, died peacefully at home on Thursday, August 2, 2007.
Born August 1, 1923, in Drummond, N.B., he was the eldest child of the late John Baptiste Parent and Beatrice Elizabeth (Bard) Parent.
Gerry worked as a painter all his life in Saint John, Oromocto and Dartmouth, until his retirement.
He loved cribbage, watching baseball, cooking, and had a witty sense of humour.
He was predeceased his wife, the late Marguerite Thomas-Parent; stepson, Ervin Thomas, and stepdaughter, Valerie Thomas Hodges; brother, Neil; sister, Marie Jeanne, and six brothers and sisters in infancy.
He is survived by his children, Priscilla Zed (the late Ronald Zed), Joanne Doucet (the late Reg Doucet), Linda Johnston (Ron Yaschuk), Gerard Jr. (Elaine), Muriel Willard (Jim), Dennis (Carolyn) and Elizabeth O'Brien (Paul), all of Saint John, N.B.; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by brothers, Rheal and Robert, both of Connecticut; Reggie, South Carolina; sisters, Carmel and Elva, both of Connecticut; Viola, Maine; stepdaughters, Betty Thomas, Dr. Wanda Thomas Bernard (George Bernard), Candace Thomas (Easton Dunkley), Erna (Stanley) Grant, all of Dartmouth; Roxanne Thomas, Ottawa; Cynthia Thomas (A. Shaun Morris), Bermuda; stepsons, Barry (Sharron) Thomas, Mississauga, Ont.; Blaine (Charlene) Thomas, Truro; James Calvin Thomas and Mark (Jacqueline LeRoy) Thomas, all of Dartmouth; 19 step grandchildren; 13 step great-grandchildren; two step great great-grandchildren.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth.
Cremation has taken place.
A memorial service will be held 12 p.m. Tuesday in Victoria Road Baptist Church, 36 Victoria Road, Dartmouth, Rev. Sherrolyn Riley officiating.
A repast will follow in the church hall.
Private family interment will take place at a later date.

Mrs. Lena Margaret Lines
December 21, 1914 - August 3, 2007
Lena Margaret Lines age 92, of Amherst passed away suddenly at the West Highland Manor, Amherst N.S., surrounded by her loving family on Friday, August 3, 2007.
Born in Nappan N.S., she was a daughter of the late Archie and Isabel (MacDonald) Gouchie.
Lena worked at the Maritime Pant Factory and Canada Car in Amherst. She enjoyed bowling, cooking for family gatherings, playing cards and spending time at the cottage. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. She will be sadly missed by all.
She is survived by two daughters: June Lines and Pearl Gould both of Amherst; one son: Wayne (Lynne) of Hastings; one step daughter: Louise (Ernest) Landry of Amherst; one brother: Earl Gouchie of Amherst and one sister: Nellie Shannon of Amherst; 22 grandchildren: Brian, Theresa, Michael, Larry, Trudy, Donna, Vicky, Tony, David, Donnie, Fred, Terri Ellen, Bobby Jo, Kelly Ann, Corey, Craig, Judy, Ernest, Billy, Linda, Fred and Stephen; 19 great grandchildren and 15 great great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Lena was predeceased by her first husband: Stanley Legere and her second husband: Fred Lines Sr.; son Fred Lines Jr. brothers: Albert, John and Cecil and sisters: Janet Morrris and Annie LeBlanc.
Her remains are resting in Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst, (667-9906) with visiting on Monday, August 6, 2007 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with parish prayers at 8 p.m.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at the St. Charles site of Holy Family Parish on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 at 2 p.m. with Father Vernon Driscoll officiating.
