Richard "Apples" Shaw

Glace Bay
It is with broken hearts that the family of Richard Shaw announces his passing at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex on August 10, 2007, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Glace Bay,Richard was the son of the late Wilfred & Annie Shaw.
Richard was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 3, Glace Bay. He served overseas in the Korean Conflict, for which he received the Korean Star and the United Nations Medal. Upon returning home, he was employed at Number 26 Colliery until his retirement. The next ten years were then spent pursuing his life long passion in the fishing industry on a deep sea trawler. Richard spent many happy times hunting, fishing and camping with his family and friends. He was an avid reader, a movie buff, a lover of music and especially enjoyed times spent with his grandson and buddy Kurt. Up until his recent illness, he could be found most days taking his daily walk along Glace Bay Harbour.
He is survived by his wife the former Rachel Lee, three daughters, Nina (Kevin) Kirby, Kathy (Greg) Thiel, Nancy (Frank) Simmons and two sons, Rick (Kathy) and Brian (Charlotte). Richard was the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren, Rebekah and MacKenzie Snow, Adam Krewenki, Kurt and Lauren Simmons, Colin and Anita Shaw and Matthew Shaw. He will be especially missed by his faithful and loving dog and companion "Milo".
Also surviving are three brothers, Melvin, Wilfred, Gerald and three sisters, Teresa, Jeanette and Helen.
Richard was predeceased by two brothers, Tom and Fabe and two sisters, Marie and Margaret.
Visitation will take place Monday evening from 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home on 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Anne's Church. Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Veterans and members of the Legion will form an honor guard at the church for their departed comrade. Cremation to follow with interment in the parish cemetery at a later date.

Mrs. Helen Ruta Martell
August 2, 1923 - August 10, 2007
MARTELL, Helen Rita - 84, Halifax, died peacefully on Friday, August 10, 2007, in Parkstone Enhanced Care, Halifax. Born in Sydney, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late George and Catherine (MacNeil) Burke. She will always be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother who was strong in her faith. She was a member of the parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Helen was forever in the kitchen baking tea biscuits, pies and sweets to take to someone. She worked at D'llairds retail, where she shared many laughs with co-workers which formed long term friendships forever. She is survived by her daughter, Denise (Lenny) March, Pictou; twin sons, Peter, Paul (Tina), both of Halifax; grandsons, Patrick, Nicholas, Jordan March, Alexander, Colin and Jonathan Martell; sisters, Isabel (Frank) Kehoe, Halifax; Marion (Gervaise) LaBrie, Sydney; brother, Gerald (Marina) Burke, Sarnia, Ont.; many nieces, nephews and cherished friends. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Cyril J. Martell; sisters, Eileen who died in infancy, Jennie Nicholson and Peggy MacDonald; brother, Lawrence Burke. Visitation will take place 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Sunday in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd. A funeral mass will be held 2 p.m. Monday, August 13, in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Saint Benedict Parish, 2 Melody Dr., Halifax, Father Bernard O'Neill officiating. Immediate family flowers only. Donations may be made to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia. Special thank you to all the staff of Point Pleasant Way 2nd floor Parkstone Enhanced Care who cared for our Mom in her last years.
Mrs. Yvonne Elizabeth Crease-Ling
November 6, 1940 - August 9, 2007
CREASE-LING, Yvonne Elizabeth - 66, Dartmouth, passed away August 9, 2007, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, after a lengthy battle with heart disease. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Mary Gale. She will always be remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, serving as the bonding agent for the entire family. Strong in her faith and family values, her vibrant personality touched every person fortunate enough to have met her. Yvonne's greatest pleasures came from being surrounded by her family and friends and her Monday night crib games at Branch 160, The Royal Canadian Legion, Main Street, Dartmouth. She was employed at Woolco for over 20 years at which time she gained lifelong friendships. She also enjoyed her many day trips and excursions with the Findlay Centre Seniors Group in Dartmouth, which she spoke of often. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband, Ronald Crease, and brother, Barney Gale. She is survived by her first husband, Joseph Ling, and their four sons, Tony, David (Lisa), Stephen (Maureen), Robert (Lisa); grandchildren, Ryan, Kaitlyn, Oliver, Benjamin, Stephanie, Rebecca, Ryan and Kyle; brothers, Edward "Buster" (Shirley), Anthony (Lillian), Alfred "Jake" (Iva), Tom (Rose), Eugene (Theresa), Terry (Carol); sister, Jeanette MacLeod; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Throughout her lengthy battle with heart disease she often spoke of the excellent care provided by the staff at the Dartmouth General, QEII and Halifax Infirmary as well as her final residence, The Berkley (Halifax). The family is very grateful for this quality care and compassion and will not soon forget. Visitation will take place from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Sunday, August 12, in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. The funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 13, in Blessed Pope John XXIII Roman Catholic Church, Cole Harbour. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or Canadian Diabetes Association.
Mrs. Shirley Maud Sorensen

SORENSEN, Shirley Maud - 72, Halifax, passed away peacefully Friday, August 3, 2007, in the VG Site, QEII. Born in St. John's, N.L., she was the daughter of the late Francis and Nellie (Beck) Cofield. Shirley is survived by her husband, Gerry; daughter, Roxanne Saunders; and granddaughter, Micaela Sheppard, all of Halifax; brothers, Reg Cofield, Trenton, Ont.; Bill (Millie) Cofield, St. John's, N.L.; numerous nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by brother, Hubert. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. Following Shirley's wishes, her cremated remains will be interred in St. John's, N.L., at a later date. Special thanks to the nurses at the QEII for their care and kindness during Shirley's illness.
Mrs. Anna McIntyre
February 16, 1932 - August 7, 2007
Anna McIntyre, 75 - Gardiner Mines - It is with great sadness, that we the family announce the death of Anna McIntyre on Tuesday, August 7th, 2007 at the Glace Bay General Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Thomas & Margaret (McNeil) Buchanan.
Anna was a member of St. James Church in Gardiner Mines.
She was formerly employed at St. Joseph’s Hospital - kitchen staff, Victoria Haven Nursing Home and General Instruments in Sydney.
Anna loved life, bingo, cards and animals.
She is survived by her husband Dan McIntyre, Gardiner Mines, one son James ‘Butch’ and his wife Emily ‘Mickey’ Buchanan, Tanglewood, one daughter Carol (Graham) Gordon, Halifax and one sister Katherine Deveaux of Toronto.
Also surviving are three brothers, Gordie (Deats), Gardiner, Willie (Babes), New Waterford, Hughie, Glace Bay and two grandchildren, Jeff, Halifax and Leanne,Sydney.
Anna was predeceased by one daughter, Ann, one sister, Clara and three brothers, Michael, Tom and Danny.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home on 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay.
The funeral mass is Saturday 10 a.m. in St. James Church, Fr. Gerald Campbell officiating.
Cremation to follow with interment in the parish cemetery at a later date.
Following the mass all are invited to join the family for a reception in the church hall.
As an expression of sympathy for Anna, donations in her memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Mark Ellerker, staff at Glace Bay Hospital, Homecare Nova Scotia and Carrie Navarole.
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Colford
March 26, 1920 - August 6, 2007
COLFORD, Mary Elizabeth "Betty" - passed away on Monday, August 6, 2007, in Halifax.
Born in Davidson, Sask., on March 26, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Ralph and May (Webb) MacDougall.
She received her Nursing Diploma from the Halifax Infirmary School of Nursing in 1941 and served overseas as a Nursing Sister with the Canadian Army in the Second World War.
In 1950, she received her certificate in Public Health from McGill University.
She served as president of the Canadian Association for the Mentally Retarded (as the Canadian Association of Independent Living Centres was then known) and was secretary of the Board of Directors of the Bill Lynch Memorial Fund.
She was a member of the Friends of the V.O.N. and volunteered for many years at The Lodge That Gives (Canadian Cancer Society).
She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Horace Bernard "Hoddie" Colford; sisters, Lois Kennedy and Jean Mosher (Garlick); brothers, William D. "Bill" and Rev. Robert L.
She is survived by her sons, Ian (Collette), Halifax, and Bruce (Christy), San Diego; grandchildren, Kaleigh and Sean; brothers, R. Lorne MacDougall, Truro; Ian MacDougall (Joan), Brampton, Ont.; sister, Margaret Boudreau (Cyril), Halifax; many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax, on Thursday, August 9, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
A mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 10, in Canadian Martyrs Church, 5900 Inglis St.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Victorian Order of Nurses or a charity of your choice.
