Mrs. Vola Louise Welch
July 6, 1923 - August 27, 2007
WELCH, Vola Louise - 84, Cherry Brook. It is with great sadness the family mourns the tragic passing of Vola Louise (Sparks) Welch on the night of August 27, 2007, as the result of a motor vehicle accident on Highway 7, Dartmouth. Born and raised in the community of Cherry Brook, Vola was the daughter of the late Walter and Inez (Fairfax) Sparks. Vola left home at an early age (after the death of her mother), travelled to Halifax, and became employed as a domestic worker. She married and returned to live at Riley's Road, where she and her husband raised their family of five daughters. Vola travelled from Riley's Road, Cherry Brook in the early 60's, first to the city of Dartmouth and then to the city of Halifax, where she lived up until 2004. Vola was well-known in the city of Halifax, where she worked as a domestic for more than 60 years. During those days, "our ladies" were paid $2.50 for half a day's work and $5.00 for a full day - they would have rivaled any modern day cleaning service. While living in Halifax, Vola continued to attend church regularly at Cherry Brook Church, where she was a member for more than 65 years. She was a former member of the Senior and Mass Choirs, and an honorary member of the Ladies Auxiliary. She loved the community of Cherry Brook and her church family. Vola was a wonderfully kind and loving mother. Her daughters acknowledge the many sacrifices she made for them. Vola always stressed the importance of being independent and self-reliant. In 2004 Vola returned to the community of Cherry Brook. In spite of battling dementia, she held on to her independence. Her faith in God was her great source of strength. Vola is survived by daughters, Marva (Bruce) Wyse, Cherry Brook; Juanita Heath and Beverley Welch, both of Ontario; brothers, Fred (Elaine), Toronto; Louis, Cherry Brook; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, James MacNeil Welch; daughters, Sandra Ennis and Donna Welch. Brothers: Walter, Lawrence, Ernest, Reginald. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Home, Dartmouth. Visitation and Ladies Auxiliary service at 7 p.m., Monday, September 3, in Cherry Brook Church, where funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 4. Burial in Cherry Brook Cemetery. Rev. Wayne Desmond will be officiating. Repast will follow in Atlantic Funeral Home family reception centre, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cherry Brook Church or the Ladies Auxiliary.
