Mrs. Helen Leona Gorman
October 18, 1927 - September 3, 2007
GORMAN (Arab), Helen Leona - 79. It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the death of Helen Leona Gorman, who passed away peacefully at home on September 3, 2007. Born in Halifax, she was the eldest child of the late Thomas and Mary Mamie (Isaac) Arab and lived on Quinpool Road, Halifax, for 46 years. She was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Howard "Howie"; infant sister, Annie Jewel; sister, Louise Soper, and brother, Edward. She is survived by her children, Dr. Wayne, Yarmouth; Mary, Halifax; Howie, Halifax, and Kathleen, (James Johnson), Toronto; grandchildren, Michael, Jennifer (Backman), David, Matthew, Daniel, and Rachel; sisters, Mary Kathleen (Charles) Horne, Dartmouth; Victoria Rose (Hardy) Sonnichson, Bedford; brothers, Thomas (Beryl), Kingston; Robert, Halifax, and Frank, Dartmouth; many nieces and nephews, and countless wonderful friends. Helen Leona (she was known as Leona to family and Helen to friends), had many great passions as she had the special gift of enjoying life fully. She had a remarkable zest for living with a great love for God, family, nature and music, and was known for her generosity and kindness. An active member of the community, she was blessed with an unwavering faith and desire for learning. As a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, she served as Minister of the Eucharist. After her four children had grown, she worked at Dalhousie University as Business Administrator for the Dalhousie Review. As each of her children completed their university degrees, she herself then attended Dalhousie University on a part-time basis and completed her Bachelor of Arts degree over a 12 year period, graduating in 1984. She was tireless and had an active schedule that few could keep up with. Along with daily mass, working full-time, her daily 30 lengths at the Dalplex or Waegwaltic pools, attending to her family and household and taking her University classes, you would not think there was much time left for anything else. However, she was also an active member of St. Mary's, Bedford and Wanderers Grounds Lawn Bowing clubs, where she and her late husband Howie were a champion team in Nova Scotia. She was a member of the Monarchist League; volunteered weekly at the Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII, assisting veterans and playing the piano; curled with the Halifax and Mayflower Curling Clubs; skied with the Seniors Ski Club and was their first honourary member. Her love of music was with her from childhood as she loved to play the piano and she ensured all of her children played as well. She also played the ukulele with Chalmers Doane's ukulele group. She then decided to learn to play the cello at age 49 and over the years, played her cello in many recitals and concerts as part of the adult string section with the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts, the Chebucto Orchestra, CAMMAC, and the Bedford Lions Club orchestra and choir. She was an active bridge player who loved duplicate bridge, and was an avid reader. For 30 years she rented a cottage at Hubbard's Beach and no matter what the water temperature, she could always be seen swimming out in the ocean, one of her greatest joys. Always smiling and ever ready to offer her advice or assistance, she made many friends over the years and so enjoyed each and every one of them. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the dedicated and caring staff of Nightingale Nursing Services, VON nurses and Palliative Care doctors and nurses. Also, thank you to the many family and friends for their flowers, food, cards and special visits. She was most appreciative and always had a smile for the many who were so kind to her. Visitation in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax, on Sunday, September 9, 2-4 (Vigil prayers at 3:30) and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be in St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 1725 Oxford St., at 10 a.m. Monday, September 10. Interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery at a later date. Reception to follow in the church hall. Memorial donations to Feed Nova Scotia.

The precious lips that I once kissed will smile for me someday.
The voice that I never heard will sing for me someday.
The tender hands that I once held so tight within my own,
will reach for me and let me see that I am not alone.
The tiny feet that I once felt kick, will dance for me someday.
We will share the lifetime lost when my angel went away.
The steady heartbeat I once heard, I’ll listen for again to help
me find my way. I’ll miss you until then.
