Mrs. Joan Eileen Russell
May 25, 1936 - September 17, 2007

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Eileen Russell age 71 of Lake Road, Glace Bay. Joan passed away on Monday, September 17, 2007 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born in Glace Bay she was the daughter of the late Hugh and Sadie (MacPherson) Morrison. Always a sunny smile, she was kind hearted with a quick laugh and an agreeable nature, she never shared a harsh word and could never look at you in anger. She was a great friend to all who knew her, as well as to any strangers she might happen to meet. Her greatest pleasures were the times she spent with family and friends; taking long midnight drives with her son, talking endlessly or just on “the go” with her daughters, laughing over tea on Sundays with her siblings or sharing memories and mischievous smiles with her grandchildren. Joan was always ready with a comforting word. Upon being told of her son Danny’s death, 25 years earlier, she could be heard trying to comfort the police. She will be sadly missed and dearly remembered. She was our treasure and she was ours for as long as we could hold her.

Joan will be sadly missed by her loving children, daughters, Darlene (Tommy) Snow, Glace Bay, Eileen (David) Bown, Sydney, Brenda Russell, Glace Bay, Joanne (Jamie) Young, Beaverbank, son, Scott (Trina), Colharbour, brothers, Danny (Phyllis) Morrison, sisters, Marguerite Fahey, Boston, Jessie Neville, Glace Bay, Anne Kuchma, Glace Bay, 9 loving grandchildren, Angela, Benito, Cory, Carlo, Jillian, Cody, Jordan, Carter, Daniel. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Frank, son, Danny, brothers, Angus, George and Lloyd.

In honoring Joan’s wishes, cremation will take place. Visitation will be held Thursday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Friday at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay with Rev. Michael Henderson officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Donations in Joan’s memory may be made to a charity of choice.

“I called you here for a reason Joan,
check behind the corner and
there was Da. They danced
and danced all night and then
he said “check behind the other
corner and there was Danny.
they rejoiced. Ma said, I’ll
stay here because this is where
my true love is, they understand
and will find true comfort in this."
