Mrs. Margret Cleland Taylor
January 3, 1916 - September 24, 2007
TAYLOR, Margaret Cleland, 91, of Yarmouth, died September 24, 2007, in Villa St. Joseph Du Lac, Dayton. Born January 3, 1916, in Dartmouth, she was a daughter of the late Violet (Cleland) and Frank Burrell. She moved from Dartmouth with her parents at an early age to reside in Brooklyn, Yarmouth Co. She attended grade school in Brooklyn and spent four years at Yarmouth County Academy, graduating in 1933. She then attended Yarmouth Business College. In 1937, she was employed as a stenographer in the law firm of R.S. McKay, K.C. In October 1938, she joined the staff of the department of Public Health and became Secretary to the Director of the Western Health Unit, serving 35 years and retiring in 1973. In Dartmouth, in 1946, she was married to Charles Henry Taylor of Cwmtillery, South Wales (Great Britain) and they took up residence in Yarmouth. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles; an infant brother and her parents. She was a member of the Nova Scotia Government Retired Employees Association, A past Matron of Keystone Chapter No. 5, Order of the Eastern Star in Yarmouth, and a life member of Yarmouth County Historical Society. Visitation will be held Thursday, September 27, from 12-2 p.m. with an Eastern Star service at 1:30 p.m. Funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth, with Rev. Robert Baker officiating. Burial will take place in Brooklyn Cemetery. No flowers by request. Donations may be made to Alzheimer's Society of Nova Scotia or a charity of choice.
Mr. Bill Johnson
September 15, 1957 - September 22, 2007
JOHNSON, Bill - In loving memory of a dear husband, father, brother and friend, Bill Johnson, 50, who was taken from us suddenly on September 22, 2007. So dearly missed by his daughter, Megan, the light of his life, and his son, Rodney, and also by his partner, Linda. A taxi driver for a number of years in Halifax, he possessed a talent envied by all, the ability to make all whom he touched happy and full of laughter. He is survived by brothers, Don (Catherine), Dempsey (Mary), and sisters, Kelly and Colin (Jaime). He joins his late mother, Lauriene and sister, Dani, in a better, more peaceful place. A Celebration of Life will be held in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax, on Thursday, September 27, from 7-9 p.m. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to The United Way.
Mr. Bertus Marinus Backer
December 15, 1922 - September 25, 2007
BACKER, Bertus Marinus, 84, Lower Sackville, passed away peacefully at home after a short illness on September 25, 2007. Born in Amsterdam, Holland, he was a son of the late Johan and Anna Backer. Bert worked as an Electrical Engineer for D.O.D., was a longtime ham radio operator (VE1AGH) and a member of the Dartmouth Yacht Club. He was also an executive member of Cobequid Road Tim Horton's Coffee Club. He is survived by his wife, Sientje; daughter, Jeany, Toronto; son, Nick and his wife Joan, Lower Sackville and brother, Frans, Amsterdam. He enjoyed his grandchildren, Chris (Trena), Cynthia (Bruce) Matthews and David. He had four great-grandchildren, Tyler, Gage, Cameryn and Nathan, as well as many nieces and nephews in Holland. He was predeceased by brothers, Martin and Jan (Amsterdam). Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Friday evening, September 28, from 7-9 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Dr. Memorial mass will be held in St. John Vianney Church, Saturday, September 29, at 10 a.m. Reception to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society. The family would like to thank the staff of both the Palliative Care Unit and the Cancer Treatment Centre at the Dixon Centre for their compassionate care of our loved one.
Mrs. Violet E. Burgess

BURGESS, Violet E. "Vi", 89, Halifax, passed away September 25, 2007, in Melville Lodge Nursing Home. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Frederick and Margaret (Kline) Hurshman. She was retired from the federal government. She volunteered at both the Red Cross and St. John's Ambulance, and was assistant Matron at Pier 21. Violet was a survivor of the Halifax Explosion. She is survived by sons, Earl Burgess, Mount Uniacke; Robert (Colleen) Burgess, Halifax; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren; half-brother, Lewis Hurshman. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Robert Burgess; brother, Gerald Hurshman; sisters, Mae Harris and Gladys Veinotte. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be 10:30 a.m. today until time of service at 11 a.m., both in Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Dr., Lower Sackville. Burial in Oakridge Memory Gardens, with a reception to follow in the funeral home.

BURKE, Donald Ward, 65, Halifax, passed away Friday, September 21, 2007, in the VG Site, QEII. Born in Drum Head, Guysborough Co., he was the son of the late Ward and Jean (Langley) Burke. Donald is survived by his son, Roger and nephew, Michael (Colleen) Burke. He was predeceased by sisters, Marjorie and Audrey. Visitation will be 12 p.m. Saturday, with funeral service at 1 p.m., both in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society.
Mrs. Sarah MacDonald (Ferguson)

MacDONALD (Ferguson), Sarah, 84, Halifax, passed away Friday, September 28, 2007, in Arborstone Enhanced Care, Halifax. Born in Cleveland, she was a daughter of the late Alex H. and Catherine (MacInnis) Ferguson. She was a graduate of the nursing school at Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, and worked as a nurse in the United States and Nova Scotia. She is survived by her husband, Lester MacDonald; and sister, Mary Latimer. She was predeceased by brothers, Dr. Peter Ferguson and John Ferguson. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Homes, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, where visitation will be held 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday. Funeral service 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel. Burial in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. Donations in memory may be made to charity of choice.

Mary Louise Harvey, age 79, of Hantsport, passed away Saturday, September 29th, 2007, in the Dartmouth General Hospital.
Born on March 29th, 1928, in Grand Pre`, Kings County, Nova Scotia, she was a daughter of the late Charles & Vera Hughes.
Surviving are daughters, Lynda Henderson, Hantsport; Karen Gillott, Hantsport; son, John F. Harvey, Hantsport; 8 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; brothers, Burton, Bill, & Wilfred; sisters, Jean, Betty & Kathy; several nieces & nephews.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, John M. Harvey; daughter, Jane; brother, Earl.
Cremation has taken place under the care of Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor. There will be no visitation by request.
A graveside committal service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007, in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport, with the Rev. Glennis Smith officiating.
