Mr. Cyrus A. "Cy" Brooks
June 30, 1926 - October 2, 2007
BROOKS, Cyrus A. "Cy", 81, of Halifax, passed away October 2, 2007, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Kingsville, Ont., he was a son of the late John and Eva Brooks. He was a C.P.O. R.C.N. and served during the Second World War and in the Korean Conflict as an E.R.A. and had 21 years of service. He worked for 22 years with HMCS Dockyard and 12 years as a doorman at Spring Garden Terrace until he took ill. Cy was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for over 40 years. He was loved by all who knew him for his generosity and devotion to those in need. He is survived by his wife, Marie Brooks (Ashford), Halifax; son, Keith (Marjolaine Corbin) Brooks and granddaughter, Sarah Ann; daughter, Anna-Lisa Brooks and grandchildren, Alexander, Nicholas and Mary Kathleen, all of Quebec City; stepdaughters, Sandra (Dennis) Carty, Ontario; Pauline (Howard) Blackmore, Lower Sackville; stepsons, Wayne (Peggy) Joudrey, Toronto, Ont.; Danny (Sheila) Joudrey, Fall River; brother, William (Ruth) Brooks, Leamington, Ont.; seven step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Beatrice, Veina, Dorothey and Ouletta. Visitation will be held 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Thursday in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., where a funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, October 5, in Atlantic Funeral Home Chapel. Reception following the service, Rev. James Haughn officiating. Burial in Fairview Lawn Cemetery Veteran's Section.
Mrs. Dorothy Isabel Noiles
October 15, 1938 - October 2, 2007
Dorothy Isabel Noiles, age 68, of Amherst passed away on Tuesday, October 2, 2007 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre in Upper Nappan, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Amherst, N.S., she was a daughter of the late Meddie and Alice (McKay) Landry.
Dot was a wonderful mother and grandmother who enjoyed her home and family. She loved sewing, crafts and making quilts. Dot was a member of Holy Family Parish, Amherst.
She is survived by her loving husband: Edward of 51 years, three daughters: Susan (Lee) MacLeod, Catherine (Gary) Sealy and Rita (Douglas) Marks all of Amherst, two sons: Gary (Linda) Noiles and Mike (Juanita) Noiles both of Amherst, three sisters: Jean (Reg) Collins and Rita Hurley both of Amherst and Phyllis (Gardener) Hurley of Maccan, N.S. brother: James (Debbie) Landry of Amherst, 14 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Dot was predeceased by a grandson: Darren Sealy, and beloved son in law: Wayne MacLeod.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst.
No visitation by request of the family.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2007 at 10 a.m. at the St. Charles site of Holy Family Parish, Amherst with Father Vernon Driscoll officiating.
Interment will take place in the St. Charles-Nativity Cemetery, Amherst. Reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dot's memory may be made to the Cumberland Regional Health Care, Palliative Care Unit.
Mrs. Elaine Ball
November 19, 1954 - October 4, 2007
Ball, Elaine, 52, Dartmouth formerly of Sydney, passed away peacefully Thursday, October 04, 2007, in the VG Site, QE11, surrounded by her loving family.Born November 19, 1954 in Sydney, she was a daughter of Rolf and Margaret (Nash) Head, Sydney. Elaine worked as a bookkeeper and office manager with Video Difference in Halifax for the past 12 years. Along with her parents, Elaine is survived by her loving husband of 33 years, Allan William; son, Keith William; daughter Lindsay (David) Fleming; grandchildren, Alex, Kaelyn and Elliot, all of Dartmouth; sister, Katherine Edwards, Sydney; brothers Edwin (Claire) Head, Dartmouth; Frank (Janet) Head, Sydney; eight nieces and nephews. Arrangements have been entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, where the funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday. Family flowers only. If so desired, donations in Elaine’s memory to Kidney Foundation of Canada, Nova Scotia Branch, Barrington St., Halifax, NS B3J – 2A1 or a charity of choice are welcomed.
Mr. Herbert Marr
January 24, 1927 - October 2, 2007
Marr, Herbert, 80, Dartmouth husband of Alicia and father of Alan and Ruth, died peacefully on October 02,2007, in the Palliative Care Unit of the VG Site, QE11, after a long and valiant struggle with cancer. He enjoyed a full life of science, travel and the arts, and will particularly remembered by his paintings and his courtesy. As he wished, there will be no memorial service. His family thanks the doctors, nurses and volunteers in the Palliative Care Unit, the Cancer Clinic and the VON for their support and care. Donations in his memory may be made to the SPCA or Red Cross Society.
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Cave
May 26, 1927 - October 5, 2007
CAVE, Mary Elizabeth “Liz”, 80, Lower Sackville, passed away on October 5, 2007, in the Cobequid Centre. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late William and Mary (Noonan) Dryden. Liz enjoyed camping , puzzles, dancing and spending time with her cat, Cleo. She was well-known for her keen sense of humour which was appreciated by all who knew her. Surviving are her husband, Donald; son, Robert (Thelma), Portuguese Cove; grandchildren, Tyrone, Tyson, Rayline, Robert and four great-grand children; brother , Tom (Celee) Dryden, Langley, B.C., stepsister, Marg Ainsworth, Halifax. She was predeceased by sister, Francis. Visitation will take place today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Dr., Lower Sackville. Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m.in St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church, Beaverbank Road, Father Johni Matthew officiating. Burial in Oakridge Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Liz can be made to Canadian Cancer Society.
Mr. Adolphus H. "Al" Smith
March 31, 1918 - October 6, 2007
SMITH, Adolphus H. "Al" - It is with deepest sadness that we announce the passing of Adolphus "Al" H. Smith on October 6, 2007, in his 89th year, at home in Dartmouth. Born in Parrsboro, he was the son of the late Brenton J. and Mildred J. (Taggart) Smith. Al grew up in Cumberland County and joined the Merchant Marine at the age of 18, sailing the Atlantic and Caribbean Sea. He remained in the Merchant Navy until 1941 when he joined the Royal Canadian Navy. While home during the war he met his future bride, Mary Jane "Mamie", and they were married in 1943. Al remained in the navy until 1945. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the Atlantic Star, The Canadian Volunteer Service medal with Clasp, and the 1939-45 War Medal for his service. The following year he began work at the Halifax Shipyards. In 1952 he joined the Department of National Defense Fire Services and worked as a fireman both at the dockyard and at Shearwater, retiring in 1979 after 27 years of loyal service. In 1967 the family moved to Dartmouth. Al enjoyed playing cards, was a member of the Centennial Branch Legion, a member of Keith's No. 17 Masonic Lodge, and a Kiwanis Club member. He will be sadly missed by his faithful companion, his Pomeranian Sabre. He is survived by his beloved children, Shirley (John) Richardson, Owen Sound, B.C.; Audrey (Gord) Gelineau, Winnipeg, Man.; Marilyn (Murray) Lee, Dartmouth; Dawn (Marcel) Morin, Windsor, Ont.; Donald (Vivian) Smith, Barry (Christine) Smith, Joyce (John) Larkins, all of Dartmouth; brothers, Russell, Lloyd, Floyd Smith; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Mary Jane (Bourgeous); brothers, Harley, Everett, Lawson, Stewart, Fred; sisters Ethel, Hilda, Jessie, Eva, Laura. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Wednesday from 7-9, memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, October 11, all in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, Rev. Patricia Malin officiating. Burial in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens, with a reception to be held in the funeral home.
