Mr. David William "Billy" O'Neill
July 16, 1948 - October 13, 2007
It is with great sadness that we announce the peacefully passing of David William "Billy” O’Neill age 59 of Seaview Manor, Glace Bay on Saturday, October 13, 2007 at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, Billy was the son of the late Leo and Veronica “Lollie” O’Neill. He was also a member of St. John the Baptist Parish, New Aberdeen.
Billy had a tremendous zest for life. As a young man, Billy was always game for an adventure, whether it was a road trip to Ontario to visit family or playing baseball with the neighbourhood kids. A natural prankster, Billy had a mischievous twinkle in his eyes that always gave him away. Billy had a huge laugh that came right from his toes. He loved to laugh and make others laugh; Billy greeted everyone with a big smile that was infectious. One smile from Billy and people couldn’t help but smile in return.
Billy worked on the railway for the Cape Breton Development Corporation (DEVCO). He also lived and worked in Toronto, Ontario for a brief period of time. Living and working in Toronto was perfect for Billy, a devoted Toronto Maple Leaf fan. While living and working in Toronto, Billy attended many games and followed the Leafs even after he moved back to Glace Bay.
In 1976, Billy was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Although his illness progressed rapidly, Billy remained strong and adapted to life with MS. His smile never wavered, his courage never faltered. Everyone around him drew strength from him and learned from his example.
In 1986, Billy’s illness progressed. He moved into Seaview Manor that year and gained another family. For 20 years, the Manor’s staff took exceptional care of Billy. They became part of his family and he became part of theirs. They laughed with him, joked with him and treated him as a person, not a person with a disability.
Family meant everything to Billy. He enjoyed it when family members came to visit and shared stories, jokes and memories with him. His most precious treasures were his grandchildren, Matthew and Ashley, who gave him so much joy and happiness. Billy radiated with pride whenever they visited and loved hearing them talk about school, Matthew’s hockey games and Ashley’s dance classes.
Billy will be sadly missed by his children Billy, of Toronto, Ont., and Terri Lynn (Sheldon) McNeil of Caledonia, Ont. and his grandchildren, Matthew and Ashley. He is also survived by his brothers, Joseph (Florence), Reserve Mines and Gerald, Mississauga, Ont., sisters, Patricia (the late Fred Redding), Coquitlam, B.C., Elaine (Jack) MacDonald, Glace Bay, Francie (the late Gerald Gilbert), Glace Bay, Jean (Gary) Clancy, Houston, Texas and Mildred (John) Haitse, Killarney, Ont. Billy is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Billy will also be missed by three special friends who were like family to him, Mary and Archie Gould, Glace Bay and Carol Ellerker, Hamilton, Ont.
Besides his parents, Billy was predeceased by former wife, Josephine (Yates), a son and daughter in infancy, sister, Imelda “Mella” Popwell, brothers, John Francis, in infancy, John Bernard “Jackie” and Tommy, sister-in-law, Winnifred (Hill) and brother-in-law, Maurice Popwell.
Visitation will take place Monday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at St. John’s Parish with Fr. John MacIntyre officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Donations in Billy’s memory may be made to Multiple Sclerosis Society.

NORTH, Stephanie Patricia, 28, Dartmouth. It is with great sadness and broken hearts that we share the news that the beloved daughter of Alan North, Halifax, and Trish (Davidson) North and stepfather Kevin Shoebridge, Halifax, passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2007, at home. Stephanie was larger than life and possessed an incredible spirit of generosity. As we remember Stephanie, words like the following come to mind: charming, brilliant, radiant, sparkling, caring, fun-loving, witty, happy, energetic, leader, compassionate, stylish and beautiful. With a sparkle in her eye and her dazzling smile, Stephanie would instantly light up a room. To know Stephanie was to love Stephanie. Her education began at Sir Charles Tupper School and most recently included studying philosophy at Dalhousie University where she was on the Dean's List. Stephanie had dreams of pursuing a career in law with the desire to help the under privileged and less fortunate. A highlight of her education was a year abroad as a Rotary International Exchange Student in central France. While growing up, her love of music led her to study the recorder and the violin. She also enjoyed dancing, figure skating and swimming. As an award winning Realtor with A & H GMAC, she had a gift for turning clients into friends. Stephanie herself was a precious gift. Those who were privileged to be in her presence will carry her spirit in their hearts always. Stephanie is survived by brothers, Geoffrey (Jessie), Chicago, and Matthew, Halifax; sister, Kimberley, Halifax; grandparents, Donald and Lena Davidson, Debert/Truro; uncles, David North, Halifax; Frank (Linda) Davidson, North Carolina; cherished niece, Katie, Chicago; goddaughters, Desiree and Amelia, Charlottetown, and numerous cousins.
