Mr. John Albert Butler

BUTLER, John Albert, 64, Glades Lodge Nursing Home, passed away July 30, 2007, at Glades. Born in Flat Islands (Port Elizabeth), N.L., he was a son of Phoebe (Peach) Butler, Prince Albert, Sask., and Alec Butler. He moved to Halifax at the age of 10. He had lived at Twin Maples, Dartmouth, for a number of years, before moving to Glades. John enjoyed coffee with friends and visits and phone calls from his mother in Saskatchewan. He is survived by brother, Hughie Butler, Halifax; sister, Stella (Walter) Ambrosichuk and family, Prince Albert, Sask. He was predeceased by his sister, Edith L. Butler. A graveside service will be held Saturday, August 4, at 10 a.m. in Oakridge Memory Gardens. All are welcome to attend. Donations in John's name may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
Mr. Aubrey Reginald Goodwin
July 10, 1927 - August 1, 2007
GOODWIN, Aubrey Reginald, 80, Halifax, passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 1, 2007, in the VG Site, QEII. Born July 10, 1927, in Yarmouth, he was a son of the late Ashton and Mildred (Newell) Goodwin. Aubrey leaves to mourn his wife of 59 years, the former Mae Hubbard; daughter, Elaine (John) Coakley, Fall River; son, Stephen (Lynn) Goodwin, Lower Sackville; brothers, Burton, Dartmouth; Arnold, Yarmouth; sisters, Eileen, Yarmouth; and Sandra, British Columbia; grandchildren, John, Shaun, Sasha, and great-granddaughter, Olivia. He was predeceased by sisters, Pauline, Lillian, and brother, Gilbert. Aubrey's hobby was painting, in particular painting sceneries. He also had a keen wit. He will be sadly missed. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Monday in Saint Benedict Parish (Our Lady of Perpetual Help) with reception to follow in the church hall. Private family interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, Nova Scotia Branch.
Mrs. Louise Emma Baker

BAKER, Louise Emma, Dartmouth, passed away July 31, 2007, in Dartmouth General Hospital. She was a daughter of the late John and Helen MacAskill. She was an employee of Hermes Electronic Plant for 30 years. Surviving are her husband, Leonard Baker; daughters, Ruth (Anne) Rothney, Dartmouth; sons, Martin (William) Cole, Edmonton, Alta.; Scott (Curtis) Cole, Halifax; sister, Ruth Grosenracker, Indiana; grandchildren, Natashia, Krystal, Curtis, Nathaniel, Emma and Olivia. She was predeceased by brothers, Gerald, John and Kenny MacAskill, and sister, Hazel. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Monday, August 6, in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 7, in St. Thomas More Church, Rev. Irec Bem officiating. Burial in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Mr. Gerald Joseph Walsh

WALSH, Gerald Joseph - 86, Dartmouth, passed away peacefully with his family by his side in Dartmouth General Hospital on Thursday, August 2, 2007. Born in Saulnierville, he was a son of the late John Joseph and Elise (Dugas) Walsh. He was a member of the West Nova Scotia Regiment from 1939 to 1945, where he served in the United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean area and Continental Europe. Gerald was a stationary engineer with the Federal Government until his retirement. He was an avid bowler and a member of the Seniors Men's Bowling Traveling League. He was a member of the Centennial Branch Legion; West Nova Scotia Memory Club. He is survived by his wife, Isabelle (Turner) Walsh; daughters, Adrianna MacQueen, Geraldine Walsh, Mary (Doug) Langille, Sharon (Fred) Mailman, Joanne (Kevin) Smith; sons, Donald (Lillie) and Robert (Charlene); sisters, Pauline Day, Bernice (Arthur) Hall, Rachel Hall; grandchildren, Lori, James, Denise, Derek, MacKayla, Jessica, April, Gwen, Angie, Jonathan, Glenn, Russell, Elaine, Samantha, Robert, Matthew, Vanessa; 14 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by brothers, Hubert, Francis, Raymond; sisters, Etta, Hilda; brother-in-laws, Irvin Hall, Neil Comeau; granddaughter, Cheryl. Michael Anthony Hartlen

HARTLEN, Michael Anthony - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael "Chunny", on August 10, 2007, surrounded by his family, in the VG Site, QEII, after a year long battle with cancer. He was a son of the late John and Dorothy (Hilchie) Hartlen. Mike was a career firefighter with HRM, his latest station being No. 17. He began as a Junior Volunteer with the Waverley Volunteer Fire Department and went on to become one of the first salaried firefighters in Waverley before it became part of the HRM Fire Service. He was recently recognized for his 30 years of service. Mike was an avid curler and a member of the Firefighters Curling League, twice winning the Maritime Firefighters Curling Championship, the latest being 2005. He was a member of The 35 and Over Slow Pitch League and played on the Fall River Prime Cats Team. He coached the Waverley Gold Diggers Ladies Softball Team for many seasons in the past 28 years, had been actively involved in Scouting for many years with the First Waverley Group, and will be remembered by many at Bedford Baptist Church for his work preparing wooden crafts for inter-generational events. He was an accomplished woodworker. He is survived by his companion, Cheryl Miller and her son Shawn; his son, Michael, at home; daughters, Krista (Matthew), Edmonton; Heather, at home; their mother, Cheryl Hartlen; grandson, Colby (Stegemann); brother, Donald (Marilyn), Mount Uniacke; sister, Pamela, Waverley; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Edwin Cormier. Arrangements have been entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Home, Lower Sackville, where family visitation will be today from 7-9 p.m., with public visitation on Tuesday, August 14, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A service to celebrate Michael's life will be held in Bedford Baptist Church on Wednesday, August 15, at 11 a.m., Rev. Dr. Ida Armstrong-Whitehouse officiating. A private family burial will take place following the service in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Waverley Fire Hall. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the QEII Foundation - Burn Unit or to a charity of choice.

SMITH, Florence Belle - 89, Lower Sackville, passed away August 8, 2007, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Heathbell, she was a daughter of the late James and Sadie Murray. She was a member of Knox United Church in Lower Sackville. She is survived by daughters, Janet (Ross) Nisbet, Oshawa, Ont., and Nancy (Rick) Lowery, Halifax; sister, Wanda Fraser, Halifax; grandchildren, Lindsay Chauvin, Jamie (Heather) Nisbet, Carmen Nisbet, Murray (Kelly) Lowery-Simpson, Karen (Paul) Service and Andrew (Mandy) Lowery; great-grandchildren, Alethea Chauvin, Keara Nisbet, Hannah Simpson, Kirsten Simpson and Rebecca Simpson. She was predeceased by husband, J. Trevor Smith; brothers, Earl Murray, Stewart Murray; sister, Ada Scoates. May 11, 1962 - August 5, 2007
PODGURSKI, Glenn - 45, Halifax, passed away Sunday, August 5, 2007, at home. Born May 11, 1962, in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Joe and Marjorie (Fraser) Podgurski. He was a skilled carpenter and an avid sports fan, and was ecstatic that the Boston Red Sox finally reversed the curse. Glenn is survived by son, Marcus, Halifax; sisters, Debbie, Michigan; Charlene, New Brunswick; niece, Ashley; nephew, Connor, both of New Brunswick; maternal grandmother, Clothilda Fraser; several aunts, uncles, cousins and extended family. Arrangements have been entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, where the funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Mr Charles George Hulme

Charles George Hulme, 67, of Convent Street, New Waterford, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007, at home surrounded by his loving family and friends after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Charles and Jane (Waidson) Hulme.
George was a member of the former parish of St. Agnes, New Waterford. He was employed with numbers 12, 20, and Lingan Mine. George was a member of the Army, Navy, Airforce and a past member of the Kinsmen Club, New Waterford.
A man known for his quick wit, he enjoyed playing darts, camping on Sangaree Island, fishing and hunting. He was happiest when boating with family and friends on the Mira.
Surviving are his wife, the former Carmel Gillis; daughter, Shannon (Charles) Blackwood, New Waterford; sons, Bruce (Jackie), Pembroke, Ont., Troy, Lower Sackville; sisters, Ada (Courtney) Porter, Guysborough, Thelma (Bernie) Doucette, Eva (Melvin) McNeil, Marion (Neil) Donovan, all of New Waterford, Diane (Ritchie) Eksal, Scotchtown; three grandchildren, Rochelle and Tyler Hulme and Jenny-Lynn Blackwood.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Gordon in infancy and Mark.
Visitation will be held Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Saturday, Aug. 11, at 11 a.m. in the parish of St. Leonard/St. Agnes Church with burial in the parish cemetery. A luncheon will follow at the Army, Navy, Airforce, New Waterford.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or a charity of one’s choice.
George loved nothing more than spending time at his trailer in Mira with family and friends. He will always be remembered as a man big in stature with an even bigger heart.
