Mr. George 'Buster' Lewis
March 30, 1933 - September 3, 2007
It is with broken hearts and profound sadness that we regret to announce the passing of a father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and legend, George 'Buster' Lewis, in Glace Bay Healthcare Complex on Sept. 3, 2007. Buster was born on March 30, 1933 the eldest son of the late Marshall 'Buddy' and Helen (Passerini) Lewis. At an early age, Buster began working and his first job was delivering grocery orders and hauling coal with horse and wagon. On several occasions when he wasn't in school or working he would be found riding his pony or hanging out at the local blacksmith shop where he learned to be a master ferrier. When he was old enough, Buster went to work in the coal mines. He worked in numbers 12, 16, and 26 Collieries but he retired from Lingan in 1970.
He was born into a harness racing family and at the time of his death he was the last remaining reinsman of the Lewis family. Buster had a racing career that spanned nearly six decades. He drove the first parimutuel race in North Sydney in 1950 with a horse called My Pride. He owned and drove many horses in ten years but in 1960 he and his wife Eleanor Lewis acquired a horse from the late Jimmy Ferguson called Dance Me Loose. Horse and driver would go on to become a force to be reckoned with on the maritime racing circuit, breaking local track records and also having the distinction of racing in the first Gold Cup and Saucer in Charlottetown, P.E.I..
In 1965, Dance Me Loose was forced into mandatory retirement at age 14. However, in his final year he broke the track record on the Halifax Commons. Buster then headed to Oshawa, Ont., where he would apply his skills and expertise as a horseman and trainer, breaking colts at the farm and training center of Dr. John Hayes. Even though his employer made him a very attractive offer to stay, Buster's heart would take him back to the coal mines and race tracks of his beloved Cape Breton.
In 1975, Buster would once again be introduced to fame on maritime race tracks when he and his partner Abby would take the racing scene by storm with a little filly called Miss River Ryan. She would go on to become undefeated as a two and three year old and break several records.
In 1977, Buster would once again come back with another two year old filly called Eden Sunrise. She would also be undefeated as a two year old, but unfortunately she would be injured in her first start as a three year old in a stake race in Charlottetown. However she did go on to be mare of the year in Truro as a four year old. While again, Buster owned, trained and drove many of his own horses, he also drove many for local owners and was leading driver at the Sydney oval for a few years. Within the last decade, he and his best friend Theresa campaigned several horses with some of the more notable ones being Dusty Lane Angie, Hurricane B Allie, Euripides and the lone horse in the stable, Ferge.
Buster is survived by two daughters Diane Lewis McNeil, New Waterford, Helen (Leo) Blackburn, Chicoutimi; and their mother Eleanor, New Waterford; one brother Monty (Linda), Fredericton, NB; grandchildren, Victoria Lewis McNeil, Nicole Lewis McNeil, Jessy Blackburn and Gillume Blackburn; nieces and nephews Juanita, Cheryl, Lana, Adam, and Steven; friend and companion Theresa MacIsaac and her daughters Jenise, Koleane, Kayla and Kenna. He is also survived by his only living uncle, Bunny Lewis, Calgary and several cousins.
Besides his parents, Buster was predeceased by his partner Abby Gwen Lewis and her Daughters Darlene, Diane and Thelma; two sisters in infancy and a special cousin Dougie Passerini, Ont./New Waterford.
Visitation will be held Thursday, from 6 - 10 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. Funeral service will take place Friday, Sept. 7, 2007 at 11 a.m. in All Saints Anglican Church with Rev. Stacey LeMoine officiating. Burial will follow in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lung Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. We would also request that where and whenever possible that you show an act of kindness to someone in need.
