Matthew Russell Brown
July 12, 1970 - September 9, 2007
BROWN, Matthew Russell - 37, Fort McMurray, Alta., passed away Sunday, September 9, 2007, at home. Born in Halifax, he was a son of Russell James and Annie (Dodge) Brown. Matthew grew up in Woodside, and attended Dartmouth High School, Dartmouth Vocational School, Akerley Campus and Compu-College. He worked at IMP Trucking and Siemans before leaving for New Brunswick in 2001, where he worked for Irving Oil. In 2002 he moved to Fort McMurray, Alta., where he was currently employed. Matthew was a free spirit who loved life. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. We will miss his quick wit, sense of humour and a smile that truly "lit up a room". He is survived by his parents, seven year old son, Ryan Matthew McGrath, Porters Lake; brother, Richard (Josie) Brown; nephew, Alexander; niece, Victoria, all of Richmond Hill, Ont.; several uncles, aunts and cousins. He was predeceased by maternal grandparents, Maxwell and Marion (Blagdon) Dodge, and paternal grandparents, Stanley and Stella (Benedick). Visitation will be held today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., with cremation will follow, and a memorial service will be held Friday 11 a.m., all in the chapel of Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, Rev Captain Furey officiating. Burial in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens with a reception to follow in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Salvation Army Church.
Mr. H. Dave Rushton
April 7, 1939 - September 14, 2007
H. Dave Rushton age 68, of Amherst passed away Friday, September 14, 2007 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Center in Upper Nappan, N.S., surrounded by his loving family. Born in Springhill, N.S. he was a son of Hilda (Colburne) DeCoste of Pugwash and formerly of Oxford. Dave worked for Robb's Engineering, where he had 25 years of service. Dave enjoyed hunting, bluegrass music and camping. He is survived by two daughters: Valerie (Tim) Kinnear and Kimberly (Tim) Lucci both of Amherst; two sons: Harold (Wanda) Rushton and Kevin (Lorna) Rushton both of Amherst; two sisters: Donna Fraser of Amherst and Isabel DeCoste of Parrsboro NS; 6 grandchildren: Crystal, Jennifer, Bradley, Kevin Jr, Katelyn and Alisha; four great grandchildren: Courtney, Rebecca, Alyssa and Nolan; uncle’s, aunt's, several nieces and nephews. David was predeceased by his wife the former Shirley Harrison and sister: Darlene Crossman. His Family will receive visitors on Sunday, September 16, 2007 from 7-9 p.m. in Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst. A funeral service will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. from Campbell's Chapel with Rev. Byron Corkum officiating. Interment will take place in the St.Charles-Nativity Cemetery. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dave's memory may be made to the Cumberland Regional Health Care Center, Palliative Care Unit or the VON Amherst Branch.
Mr. James 'Jamie' Bernard Went
December 14, 1959 - September 14, 2007
James 'Jamie' Bernard Went, 47 Scotchtown/Dominion - It is with great sadness that we tell you that our son, brother & uncle; Jamie Went was received into heaven this Friday, September 14, 2007 to be with his Mom Eileen and his Aunt Alwina Kennedy after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's.
Jamie was born the son of Emil Went and the late Eileen (Nearing) Went. Jamie will be missed by brothers, Greg (Brenda), Halifax, John and Michael, Ontario, sisters, Linda (Richard), British Columbia, Anne Marie (Gerald) and Virginia both in Dartmouth, Marian (Paul), Dominion and Angela in Yarmouth.
Jamie enjoyed his life everyday. He enjoyed bowling, comic books, bingo and going to card games with his dad. He always had a smile on his face and he would always say, 'Nice Day' to everyone he met. Jamie was very well known and well liked. Everyone who met Jamie, always remembered him. This showed his great love of life and people. He will be sadly missed by his Dad, Emil who was his closet pal in life. They did everything together, if you saw Dad, Jamie was by his side.
He will be missed also by his sister Marian and her husband Paul as well as Courtney, with whom he resided with in Dominion. Jamie, Dad and Marian became a threesome over the years, always together where ever they traveled.
Jamie was our special angel in life and now he is our angel in heaven watching over us. So every day think of Jamie and smile and say, 'Nice Day'. He would like this for he always had a smile for everyone.
Special thanks are extended to Dr. Peter Littlejohn, Dr. Brian Foley and Dr. Debbie Gowan (Palliative Care) for their kindness toward Jamie during his life and illness, you will not be forgotten. Also special thanks and love to his homecare workers during the past year and special friends, Mrs.Annie Deurelle and Mrs.Madden.
Visitation is today, Saturday, September 15, 2007 from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday (2-4) (7-9) p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home on 380 Smith Street in New Waterford.
The funeral mass is Monday, 2 p.m. at the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Michael's Church.Interment will follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Fellowship will take place at the Carmel Centre.
As an expression of sympathy for Jamie, donations in his memory may be made to the N.S. Alzheimer's Association, Down Sydrome Society or the Special Olympics.
God Bless everyone who touched Jamie's life, You all made a difference and he loved everyone. God holds our Angel Jamie close to his heart until we meet again.

Mrs. Helen Margaret LaPierre

LaPIERRE, Helen Margaret - 84, passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 12, 2007, in The Birches, Musquodoboit Harbour. She was a former long-time resident of Murray Hill Drive, Dartmouth. Born in Carbonear, N.L., she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Bridget (McCarthy) Sweeney. She is survived by children, Gerard (Judy), Head Chezzetcook; David (Helen), Langley, B.C.; Joan (David O'Toole), Dartmouth; Maria (Francis) Thimot, Dartmouth; Shauna (Stephen Parkin), Bridgewater; Kevin (Hilda), Dartmouth; grandchildren, Carrie and Vanessa LaPierre, David (Trisha) and Sean Thimot, Ryan and Geoffrey O'Toole, Nathan LaPierre, Thomas and Paul LaPierre; great-grandchild, Nicholas LaPierre, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 57 years, Anthony "Tony" LaPierre; son, Paul; sister, Madeline, and brother, Patrick. Helen was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was an active member of the Catholic Women's League, Immaculate Conception Church, Woodside, and the St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. Peter's Parish, Dartmouth. Special thanks to Dr. Merritt and to the nurses and staff of The Birches for the high level of care provided to Helen during her time there. Visitation will be in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, on Monday, September 17, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will take place in St. Peter's Church, Maple Street, Dartmouth, on Tuesday, September 18, at 12 noon. Burial will take place in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens, Dartmouth. Family flowers only. Donations in Helen's memory may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society or to The Birches Foundation.
Barrie Michael Sweeney
July 14, 1955 - September 14, 2007
SWEENEY, Barrie Michael - 52, Halifax, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away suddenly at home on Friday, September 14, 2007. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Ken and Beulah (Burrill) Sweeney. Barrie worked for the Halifax Regional Municipality for many years. He was a jack-of-all-trades and master of none. Barrie was completely devoted to family and home. He was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed writing poetry. Barrie will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Barrie is survived by his wife and soul mate of 23 years, Nancy Ellis; daughter, Tara, and stepdaughters, Miriam Wilson, Kim Ellis, all of Halifax; stepson, Darrin (Barb) Ellis, Dartmouth; sister, Susan Nowe, Queens County; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Barrie was predeceased by granddaughter, Robin Jones. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, September 18, and the funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 19, both in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax, Rev. James Haughn officiating. Cremation to follow. Interment at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stoke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
Lois Fay Marie Slaunwhite
March 15, 1955 - September 13, 2007
SLAUNWHITE, Lois Fay Marie - 52, Terence Bay. Lois was a caring and beloved mother, wife, grandmother and friend. She passed away peacefully in the VG Site, QEII, on Thursday, September 13, 2007. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late James and Alice (Jollimore) Slaunwhite. Lois was admired and loved by many. She worked for 35 years for the County of Halifax Regional Municipality and was a team leader. She will be missed greatly from her coworkers. Lois received an award for 30 years of service. She achieved her Certificate of Municipal Administration from Dalhousie University. She enjoyed waking in the early morning hours to watch the sunrise. She was also very grateful for living close to the ocean all of her life, and she especially liked going to listen and watch the waves crash on a stormy day. Lois is survived by her husband, Marshall; son, Bradley; grandsons, Cameron and Noah; sisters, Tishia and Nona (Arthur) Sampson, and brothers, Ivan (Shirley) Slaunwhite and Robert Slaunwhite. She was predeceased by brother, Gerald. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, September 20, in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. Funeral service to be held 1 p.m. on Friday, September 21, in St. Paul's Anglican Church in Terence Bay. Donations can be made to St. Paul's Church or to the Canadian Cancer Society
Denys Roger Veilleax
January 22, 1925 - September 13, 2007
VEILLEUX, Denys Roger - 82, Halifax. The death occurred on Thursday, September 13, 2007, in Parkstone Enhanced Care, formerly of 71 Sunnybrae Ave., Halifax. Born in St. George de Beauce, Que., in 1925, the son of the late John and Amelia (Gilbert) Veilleux, he came to Halifax in 1945 to work as a welder at the Halifax Shipyards and later was employed by Moosehead Breweries Ltd., Dartmouth, retiring in 1990. Denys and his late wife, Margaret (Grover), enjoyed music, dancing and loved to travel. He is survived by his son, Paul, Halifax; brother, Paul (Gisele), Lonqueuil, Que., and sisters-in-law, Emilie, Greenfield Park, Que., and Marie Jeanne, Quebec City, Que., as well as nieces and nephews, including Lyse, Jean, Gilles, and Roger Veilleux, all living in Quebec. In addition to his wife, Margaret, Denys was predeceased by his sister, Helene, and brothers, Roland, Maurice and Donat. We wish to extend our sincere appreciation to the staff of Point Pleasant Way for their care of Denys during the past few years. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. There will be no visitation by request. A committal service will be held in Oakridge Memory Gardens, Lower Sackville, on Tuesday, September 25, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
