Mr. John Patrick "Jack" Brophy
July 4, 1938 - September 18, 2007
BROPHY, John Patrick "Jack", 69, Lower Prospect, passed away at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, September 18, 2007. He was the son of the late John and Alice (Bartlett) Brophy. John is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jeannette (Slaunwhite); daughters, Wendy (Bill) Camp and Cheryl; sons, Jackie (Kim) and Derrick (Shirley); granddaughters, LoriAnne and Victoria; grandsons, Matt, Patrick, Andrew, and Jacob; also many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister, Frances. Jack so enjoyed traveling the province inspecting schools and hospitals. He wasn't ready to retire at the age of 65 in 2003. He was a 51 year member of Local 56 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union. He was a lifetime member of Star of the Sea Church, Terence Bay. He loved Lower Prospect, in fact it was the only place he ever wanted to live or be in. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, September 21, in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday, September 22, in Star of the Sea Church, Terence Bay, Father Raymond Mura officiating. Interment to follow in Star of the Sea Cemetery with a reception to follow in Terence Bay Fire Hall. Jack's wish to remain at home until the end was made possible with the help and support of the VON, Northwood Home Care and Dr. Ian Cameron. Donations in Jack's memory can be made to Star of the Sea Church or the Brain Tumor Foundation.
Mr. Lewis George Fahie
October 7, 1913 - September 17, 2007
FAHIE, Lewis George, 93, Dartmouth and Halifax, passed away on September 17, 2007, in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII. Born in Ship Harbour, he was the son of the late Lewis and Margaret (May) Fahie. Lewis was a veteran of the Second World War. He spent his working life with Canadian National Railways. He enjoyed fishing, carpentry and gardening. Surviving are daughter, Mary (Calvin) Payne, Ajax, Ont.; son, Gerard Francis Fahie, Dartmouth and granddaughter, Eleanor Anne Bouchard, Brampton, Ont. Lewis was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Anne. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held today from 2-4 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. Memorial service will be in St. Clement's Roman Catholic Church, 16 Gaston Rd., Dartmouth, on Friday, September 21, at 10 a.m., Father John Mills officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. Private family burial in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. Special thanks to the staff of Dartmouth General Hospital and Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII, 5th Floor West. Mrs. Irene Crookshank (Fennell)
June 4, 1913 - September 23, 2007
CROOKSHANK (Fennell), Irene, 94, well-known Halifax resident, passed away peacefully in Melville Lodge on Sunday, September 23, 2007. She was a daughter of the late Francis Fennell and Adelle (Carroll) Fennell. She attended Sacred Heart School, Halifax and was a graduate of Halifax Academy. Before her marriage, she was employed with Simpson's Department Store, Halifax, in the credit department. She was a member of the Waegwoltic Club, The Saraguay Club, Halifax Curling Club and the Ashburn Golf Club. She was a founding member of Symphony Nova Scotia and also assisted the Sister of Service in their immigration work. She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church where she taught Sunday school and St. Agnes Church. Mrs. Crookshank is survived by sister, Patricia Fennell of Halifax, and brothers, Frederick, Toronto and Dr. Francis (Vera) Fennell, Halifax; nieces and nephews, Mrs. Patricia (Gerald) Ferguson, Mrs. Virginia (Edward Jr.) Fennell, Paul (Rose) Fennell, Carol Fennell, John (Catherine) Fennell, David (Barbara) Fennell, Margaret Irene (William) Arbuckle, Peter Fennell, all of Halifax; Dr. Martha (Bruce) Jodrey, Windsor and Chester; numerous great-nieces and nephews; stepdaughters, Kathy (George) Archibald, Kentville; Betty (Dr. Henry) Muggah, Ottawa; stepson, George Crookshank, Calgary; and numerous step grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, J.G. "Bill" Simpson and second husband, C.W. Percy Crookshank; brother, Edward; sister, Louise Donahoe; nephew, Edward Jr. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, September 26, in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. The funeral mass will take place in St. Thomas Aquinas Church on Friday, September 28, at 10 a.m., with Father James Mallon and Father Lloyd O'Neill officiating. Reception immediately following for family and friends in St. Thomas Aquinas Parish Hall. Interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Irene Fennell Scholarship/Bursary at Sacred Heart School, Halifax, a cause which was very close to her heart. The family wishes to thank Dr. Gill, Dr. Poranek and Dr. Gopinath, the staff at Melvillle Lodge and her devoted caregivers, Leah Dugay and especially Linda Hunt.
Mr. Leo Patrick Arab
June 10, 1928 - September 23, 2007
ARAB, Leo Patrick, 79, died peacefully at home on September 23, 2007. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late James and Rachede Arab. Leo was a graduate of St. Mary's University with a long and distinguished career in education, beginning at St. Patrick's Boys School, where he later became vice principal. Over a period of 35 years, he taught and administered in several schools in Halifax, ending his career in 1989 as vice principal of Joseph Howe School. His personal life was filled with music, his first passion, beginning as a child singing on the radio. Over the years, he developed a reputation as a gifted pianist and entertainer, playing at numerous venues. He was keenly interested in history, which manifested itself in the many scrapbooks he put together, chronicling the Second World War, which any historian would value. As well, his love for the Montreal Canadiens is showcased in his scrapbooks dating back to the 1940s, Each one a treasure to the sports enthusiast. Leo was an avid reader, gardener, and had an excellent knowledge of trivia, in particular music and movies. He possessed his own unique sense of humour which was unparalleled, and he had a heart that was tender, generous and full of love. He is survived by his brother, Frank; his beloved nieces, Cheryl (Brian McKenzie), Catherine (Eric Richard); his nephew, Gregory, and grandniece and nephew, Amy and Andrew. He is also survived by his sister, Kathleen (Jennie) Haywood; brother, Joseph (Neva); sisters, Margaret Casey and Catherine Cable, and a number of nieces and nephews, each whose life he has touched. He was predeceased by his infant brother, Charles, and sister, Sadie Cooke. Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today in Atlantic Funeral Home, Bayers Road, Halifax. Funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Agnes Church, Mumford Road, Halifax. Burial at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
Mrs. Bernice M. Walker
January 9, 1945 - September 19, 2007
Bernice M. Walker, 62, of 163 Warburton Road, Gardiner Mines, passed away Wednesday, September 19th at home surrounded by family after a lengthy illness.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Regina Angione and Bernard MacNeil. She was a member of St. James Church, Gardiner Mines. Bernice worked for the C.B. School Board and was a loving mother and friend to all.
She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Bernice is survived by daughters, Paula (Alex), Halifax and April (Les), Halifax and son, Richard, Ontario, as well as precious granddaughter Ava and many sisters, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Bernice is predeceased by her husband, Richard and daughter, Laurie Ann.
She will always be remembered for her love of family, sense of humour and love of animals, especially her best buddy Buster.
We would like to extend a very special thank you to her sisters, Carol Gittens, Marie Wilcox, and family friend, Laura Scheller for their unwavering love and support during our Mother’s illness. We would also like to thank Palliative Care, the VON and Home Care for their respect and caring when dealing with our family.
Visitation for Bernice Walker will be held Sunday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Monday at St. James Church, Gardiner Mines. Fr. Gerald Campbell will be officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in the parish cemetery.
Mr. Alden Bridges Estabrook
July 8, 1937 - September 21, 2007
ESTABROOK, Alden Bridges, 70, Dartmouth, passed away peacefully Friday, September 21, 2007, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born July 8, 1937, in Fredericton, N.B., he was the son of the late David and Dorothy Estabrook. After graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of New Brunswick, he began a lifelong career as a respected structural engineer. Above all, Alden was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather. His friendly disposition, love of people and sense of humour often wove together to form a close network of friends, family and coworkers. He enjoyed the outdoors and nature which was reflected through his years as a volunteer leader with the Boy Scouts of Canada and his ongoing passion for wood carving. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his eldest son, David. Alden is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Connie (Stickles); sons, Derek (Jill), Dan (Pam) and Don; very special grandchildren, Hayden, Hannah, and Isabel; sisters, Anne (Ernest) Murphy, Shirley Anderson, and Lillian (Ron) Davidson; cousin, Marie (Clive) Roberts, whom he considered to be more of a sister; niece, Kathy Anderson; nephews, Alvin (Margaret) Murphy, Geoff and Peter Davidson. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the doctors, nurses, radiology technicians and all those connected to the ENT clinic and Cancer Care Nova Scotia. A special thank you is sent to the staff and volunteers of the Dartmouth General Hospital, especially 3 West, whose prolonged care consistently went beyond his physical needs. Arrangements have been entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, where Alden's life will be celebrated with a gathering of family and friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, and where the funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Rev. WARNELL, Helen Audrey, 92, Ocean View Manor, Eastern Passage, passed away peacefully Thursday, September 20, 2007, in the manor. Born September 14, 1915, in Head Jeddore, she was a daughter of the late Nathaniel and Jenny Dooks. Helen was the last surviving member of her immediate family, and is survived by daughter, Heather (Neil); sons, Allen, Boyd, Barry, all of Dartmouth; Alton (Stella), Middle Sackville; daughters-in-law, Mary and Sandra, Dartmouth; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Owen; sisters, Una Cooper, Frances Williams, Jean Dooks; brothers, Garth, Donnie, Carl and Roy Dooks. Special thanks are extended to the residents and staff of the 3rd floor, Ocean View Manor for their care, compassion and friendship over the past seven years.
